Book excerpt: This book takes a look at the cultural and musical impact Madonna's music, films and persona had on the world in the 1980s. It was the decade she helped define with a series of classic albums (from her self titled debut, through Like A Virgin and True Blue to Like Prayer), the hit movie Desperately Seeking Susan, and her revolutionary music videos. She became the most famous woman in the world and a pop idol rivaled only by Michael Jackson. Nearly thirty years since that decade ended, Chris Wade delves into this special time in a series of essays on her work, gaining fresh insights into the phenomenon of early Madonna, as well as interviewing those who worked with her.

This work examines how Madonna methodically discovered and constructed herself (often rewriting her past), the nature and extent of her ambition and the means she used to reach her goals. It also details the way in which she organized her own cult (borrowing from the gay community), devised her artistic output, and cunningly targeted different audiences. It also studies the fundamental contradiction--virgin or vamp? saint or prostitute?--that fuels Madonna's career and describes how Madonna reflects today's society, its contradictions and its attitudes toward sexuality and religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK In 1984, a young pop musician with a few hits under her belt gave an energetic performance on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. After the performance, Dick Clark asked of the young woman: "What do you hope will happen, not only in 1984 but for the rest of your professional life? What are your dreams? What's left?” Without missing a beat, Madonna replied that she wanted "to rule the world." Twenty-eight years after her bold response, Madonna’s accomplishments and popularity demonstrate that, in a way, this proclamation proved prophetic. Madonna is undoubtedly an international celebrity. Thanks to the spread of MTV and the Internet, Madonna’s music has become a fixture in the lives of people as far away as Zimbabwe. She has achieved a level of fame that causes her to be known by people across the world, regardless of culture, age, or sex. Even those who don’t listen to music know who Madonna is. Right from the start, Madonna seemed to have a plan on how to dominate the world. She wasn’t just satisfied with having a successful music career. Right after her first two albums, both of which were blockbuster albums that produced numerous hit singles such as “Like a Virgin,” “Holiday,” and “Material Girl,” she dabbled in movies and became a movie star. With her messy chic style that was mimicked by girls everywhere, she also became a fashion icon. Her presence and influence was so great in the 1980s that her style and music has come to characterise the decade. As time went on, the world saw that Madonna wasn’t just some entertainer who loved to shock people. Of course, she did a great job of that over the years, by doing things such as wearing scanty clothing while draped in crucifix necklaces, kissing other women, and releasing a soft porn coffee table book. But perhaps the real reason why she hasn’t disappeared yet is because Madonna is extremely smart and shrewd. Her accomplishments in the music industry alone include selling more than 300 million records worldwide, ranking as the world’s top-selling female recording artist and top solo artist, several sold-out tours, and multiple Grammy awards. This hardly scratches the surface of what she’s done with her life. By reinventing herself over and over again and diversifying her talents, she had managed to keep herself relevant and exciting. Not only is she a singer and actress, she’s also a movie producer, songwriter, author, philanthropist, and business entrepreneur. She is one of those rare people who have become a part of American culture itself. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK So after struggling for several years in New York City, Madonna finally hit it big in the early ‘80s. Her first album, the self-titled Madonna, featured several Billboard top hits, including “Holiday,” “Borderline,” and “Lucky Star.” At MTV’s very first Video Music Awards, she performed her new song “Like a Virgin” to promote her upcoming album of the same name. Performing on top of a giant wedding cake and writhing around on the floor while dressed in a wedding dress fitted with a bustier, she became a national sensation. She also caused parental and religious outrage, who thought her blatant displays of sexuality rather offensive. Like a Virgin demonstrated that Madonna wasn’t just a one album wonder. It took the number one spot on the album charts for three weeks straight. Seven million copies of the album were sold worldwide by May 1985. Her music video for “Material Girl,” inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” song routine from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, showed that Madonna could do the glamorous look as well just as good as any other celebrity.

Book excerpt: Madonna NYC 83 celebrates a moment in early 1980s New York that has been much reappraised in recent years for its fecund interactions between the worlds of fashion, art and music. This economically fragile period gave rise to a vital restlessness in the city, spawning adventurous personal styles and music that merged rap, funk, punk and pop. Madonna represented this sensibility like no-one else. As this book makes amply clear, from the start she was determined to define a look for herself, and to carve out a space in the public imagination. Richard Corman met Madonna by chance in 1983 and created a collection of images that constitute a multifaceted portrait of the young singer. This publication is a limited edition of 50 copies, and includes an original signed and numbered print of the image Cinderella, that comes in a separate envelope within the slipcase.

Book excerpt: The Eighties were about big ideas writ large - new money, new style, gender fluidity, gay pride, attritional politics, the 'special relationship', nuclear fear, AIDS, cocaine, ecstasy, tabloid royalty, the rise of urban pop, and ultimately geopolitical chaos. Using a big narrative approach, Dylan Jones' history of the decade in pop frames the decade through some of its most important and popular hits, choosing records which either epitomised their time, or ushered in a new cultural shift. So we move seamlessly from Rapper's Delight and the genre defining moment of hip hop into The Specials' spectral, Ghost Town; from ABC and the apotheosis of New Pop (The Look of Love) to Madonna's breakthrough moment with Like a Virgin, and so on. In the '80s each year brought a new twist as technology shifted and genres snowballed, MTV reigned supreme and the story of pop became globalised. It was a decade of excess in all areas, especially ambition, but it was in the transcendent moments of pop perfection that the '80s found its true art-form. Subjective and idiosyncratic, SHINY AND NEW takes us from downtown New York to post-industrial Manchester, in the first widescreen attempt to weave together the stories, the songs and events that re-shaped music and society.

Book excerpt: When video killed the radio star, Sharon Oreck was calling the shots. Video Slut takes an irreverent look behind the scenes of the music-video industry during its eighties heyday. Oreck, one of the top producers of all time, bluffed her way into the business with no experience whatsoever and went on to produce more than six hundred video shoots with Madonna, Sting, Mick Jagger, Prince, and several members of the increasingly unstable Jackson family—not to mention a cadre of delinquent caterers, deranged interns, self-absorbed record executives, and malfeasant animal trainers. Oreck also shares the at turns hilarious, biting, and poignant story of her origins as a single teen mother, disowned by her middle-class parents, and of her journey from welfare to kung fu movie sets to film school. She approaches her own delinquency and that of the superstars she encountered with humor and candor. The result is an acerbic but sympathetic account of the outrageous effects of fame, power, and money on people in the entertainment business. No one is spared, especially herself.

Book excerpt: New York Times Editors’ Choice, One of NPR’s Best Books of the Year In this “infinitely readable” biography, award-winning author Mary Gabriel chronicles the meteoric rise and enduring influence of the greatest female pop icon of the modern era: Madonna (People Magazine) With her arrival on the music scene in the early 1980s, Madonna generated nothing short of an explosion—as great as that of Elvis or the Beatles—taking the nation by storm with her liberated politics and breathtaking talent. Within two years of her 1983 debut album, a flagship Macy's store in Manhattan held a Madonna lookalike contest featuring Andy Warhol as a judge, and opened a department called “Madonna-land.” But Madonna was more than just a pop star. Everywhere, fans gravitated to her as an emblem of a new age, one in which feminism could shed the buttoned-down demeanor of the 1970s and feel relevant to a new generation. Amid the scourge of AIDS, she brought queer identities into the mainstream, fiercely defending a person's right to love whomever—and be whoever—they wanted. Despite fierce criticism, she never separated her music from her political activism. And, as an artist, she never stopped experimenting. Madonna existed to push past boundaries by creating provocative, visionary music, videos, films, and live performances that changed culture globally. Deftly tracing Madonna’s story from her Michigan roots to her rise to super-stardom, master biographer Mary Gabriel captures the dramatic life and achievements of one of the greatest artists of our time.

Book excerpt: One of a handful of artists to emerge from Andy Warhol's celebrity-focused Interview magazine, Matthew Rolston is a well-established icon of Hollywood photography. Alongside such luminaries as Herb Ritts and Greg Gorman, Rolston was a member of an influential group of photographers (among them, Bruce Weber, Annie Leibovitz, and Steven Meisel) who came from the 1980s magazine scene. Rolston helped define the era's take on celebrity imagemaking, gender bending, and much more. Edited by long-time Los Angeles-based gallerist and curator David Fahey, this book - Rolston's fourth monograph - presents a stunning array of portraits that beautifully and succinctly capture the decade and its myriad talents. From Michael Jackson and Madonna, to Prince, George Michael, and Cyndi Lauper, the selection of images reflects a seamless blend of style, skill, and scintillation. This volume features over 100 mesmerizing photographs selected from Rolston's extensive body of work, centering on his unforgettable portraits of the era's most famous personalities. With essays by authors Pat Hackett, Andy Warhol's longtime biographer and diarist; Colin Westerbeck, noted photographic curator and expert on American photographer Irving Penn; and Charles Churchward, longtime creative director of Vogue magazine and author of The Golden Hour, a definitive biography of Herb Ritts, Hollywood Royale: Out of the School of Los Angeles, paints a fascinating picture of an indelible imagemaker and the movie stars, models, and artists he immortalised during this period. Rolston's photographs recall the glamour of Old Hollywood with postmodern irony, helping to point the way towards the cult of fame we live with today. AUTHOR: Matthew Roston is an artist who works in photography and video. In 1977, Rolston was 'discovered' by Andy Warhol, who commissioned portraits for proto - celebrity magazine, Interview, followed by assignments for Rolling Stone from founding editor Jann Wenner, and soon after, by Vanity Fair, under editors Tina Brown and later, Graydon Carter. Rolston'' 1980s images are notable for their glamorous lighting and detail-rich sets. His work has helped define the contemporary aesthetics of American portrait photography. Rolston's photographs have been exhibited worldwide and are in the permanent collections of LACMA and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., among others. SELLING POINTS: * This volume contains a veritable compendium of Rolston's innovative photographic techniques. The images range from classic vintage-style 8x10 camera portraits to more stylized experiments in cross-processing, multiple exposure, and high-contrast color. * From pop stars to movie stars, TV personalities to socialites, Warhol's protege presents a virtual 'who's who' of 1980s celebrity. 150 colour and b/w photographs
