Madeleine, the dreamer, travels in their midst, trying to make sense of her own metamorphosis. She leaves home, joins a gypsy circus, and falls into an unexpected triangle of desire and love. This topic has long been in need of redefinition. By gathering work from across disciplines with an interdisciplinary or cross-cultural scope, the topic is opened up to new perspectives of investigation. The articles in this first issue present new and exciting analyses of such diverse discourses as mythology, the fairy tale, historiography, elite culture, landscape painting, sculpture and dreaming.

She beautifully unravels the elaborate details of her family and how they overcame the tragedies that life sometimes throws at us. Martinez de Osaba's intricately woven words and stories remind the reader to celebrate the journey rather than the destination. She exposes layers of the human spirit and the intangible longing a soul has to find love and make it a home. Follow along on this epic journey-from 1930s Cuba to an escape to Spain from Castro's oppression, and finally to freedom in the United States. Martinez de Osaba chronicles her family lineage and history with honesty and authenticity. This is a story about what we find when we seek to discover our family's past. We always find more than we knew-both the good and bad-which make our life stories worth telling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Review Books Original Mavis Gallant is renowned as one of the great short-story writers of our day. This new gathering of long-unavailable or previously uncollected work presents stories from 1951 to 1971 and shows Gallant's progression from precocious virtuosity, to accomplished artistry, to the expansive innovatory spirit that marks her finest work. "Madeleine's Birthday," the first of Gallant's many stories to be published in The New Yorker, pairs off a disaffected teenager, abandoned by her social-climbing mother, with a complacent middle-aged suburban housewife, in a subtly poignant comedy of miscommunication that reveals both characters to be equally adrift. "The Cost of Living," the extraordinary title story, is about a company of strangers, shipwrecked over a chilly winter in a Parisian hotel and bound to one another by animosity as much as by unexpected love. Set in Paris, New York, the Riviera, and Montreal and full of scrupulously observed characters ranging from freebooters and malingerers to runaway children and fashion models, Gallant's stories are at once satirical and lyrical, passionate and skeptical, perfectly calibrated and in constant motion, brilliantly capturing the fatal untidiness of life.

Book excerpt: For 15-year-old Madeline “Maddie” White, things like high school and music came easy. Her mother getting married? Not so much. Talented, clever and kind, Maddie was content living a seemingly normal life with her single mother, Roxana. That is, until Roxana became engaged. The charm of Luke Luna doesn't work on Maddie... or does it? Maddie's life continues to turn upside down as she starts developing heightened senses and supernatural abilities too complex to understand. She discovers that she hails from the past — learning she is the long lost daughter of a mundane, human princess and a Moon Blood, a member of an ancient race of demigods powered by the phases of the moon. Once allies to humanity, now hunted. As Maddie tries to navigate the world of Lunacy — as well as the social hierarchy of New Hills High — she relies on her new "stepfamily". A powerful Moon Blooded coven composed of the charming Alexander, wise Renée, eccentric Ein, and the hot-headed Damian, Maddie faces the possibility that her and her new "step-siblings" may be the Moon Blooded's best chance of survival. Growing up isn't so easy after all. From A.C. Haydée comes an action-packed urban fantasy saga that blends family, vampire lore and moonlight, now out of the shadows.

Book excerpt: Romantic Writings is an ideal introduction to the cultural phenomenon of Romanticism - one of the most important European literary movements and the cradle of 'Modern' culture. Here you will find an accessible introduction to the well-known male Romantic writers - Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley and Keats. Alongside are chapters dealing with poems by Charlotte Smith, Mary Robinson, Ann Barbauld, Elizabeth Barrett Browning which challenge the idea that these men are the only Romantic writers. As a further counterpoint the book also includes discussion of two German Romantic short stories by Kleist and Hoffman. Throughout, close-reading of texts is matched by an insistence on reading them in their historical context. Romantic Writings offers invaluable discussions of issues such as the notion of the Romantic artist; colonialism and the exotic; and the particular situation of women writers and readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining John Keats’s reworking of the romance genre, Rachel Schulkins argues that he is responding to and critiquing the ideals of feminine modesty and asexual femininity advocated in the early nineteenth century. Through close readings of Isabella; or the Pot of Basil, The Eve of St. Agnes, Lamia and ’La Belle Dame sans Merci,’ Schulkins offers a re-evaluation of Keats and his poetry designed to demonstrate that Keats’s sexual imagery counters conservative morality by encoding taboo desires and the pleasures of masturbation. In so doing, Keats presents a version of female sexuality that undermines the conventional notion of the asexual female. Schulkins engages with feminist criticism that largely views Keats as a misogynist poet who is threatened by the female’s overwhelming sexual and creative presence. Such criticism, Schulkins shows, tends towards a problematic identification between poet and protagonist, with the text seen as a direct rendering of authorial ideology. Such an interpretation neither distinguishes between author, protagonist, text, social norms and cultural history nor recognises the socio-sexual and political undertones embedded in Keats’s rendering of the female. Ultimately, Schulkins’s book reveals how Keats’s sexual politics and his refutation of the asexual female model fed the design, plot and vocabulary of his romances.
