Book excerpt: Kate McCann's personal account of the disappearance and continuing search for her daughter, revised and updated. 'The decision to publish this book has been very difficult, and taken with heavy hearts ... My reason for writing it is simple: to give an account of the truth ... Writing this memoir has entailed recording some very personal, intimate and emotional aspects of our lives. Sharing these with strangers does not come easily to me, but if I hadn't done so I would not have felt the book gave as full a picture as it is possible for me to give. As with every action we have taken over the last five years, it ultimately boils down to whether what we are doing could help us to find Madeleine. When the answer to that question is yes, or even possibly, our family can cope with anything ... Nothing is more important to us than finding our little girl.' -- Kate McCann 'A must-read' Sunday Express 'Kate's book blazes with the sheer visceral force of her love for her daughter' Daily Mail 'Deeply moving' Guardian

Book excerpt: On the evening of 3 May 2007, Gerry and Kate McCann returned to their holiday apartment in the resort of Praia da Luz on Portugal's Algarve to every parents' worst nightmare: their daughter, three year- old Madeleine Beth McCann had vanished from her room. The first days and weeks after her disappearance saw an almost unparalleled level of media coverage, as the face of a blonde, giggly little girl and her grief-stricken parents made front pages and news bulletins the world over. However, as opportunities were missed and potential suspects questioned and released, including Gerry and Kate McCann themselves, accusations were levelled on all sides. The competency of the Portuguese police was brought under severe scrutiny, whilst the international media and public has continued to wonder, fairly or not, how a group of parents could leave their young children alone as they dined elsewhere. All the while, Madeleine is still missing and her fate remains unknown. Ten years on, Spanish-based investigative journalist Danny Collins has returned to Praia da Luz to re-examine the case. This is the story of what happened on that terrible night and what has followed since, piecing together the clues and false leads from the original investigation with the Metropolitan Police's efforts in recent years to find Madeleine and solve one of the most talked about cases of the century.

Book excerpt: Jon Clarke was the first journalist on the scene when Madeleine McCann went missing in 2007... and 14 years later he's still searching for the truth. This book charts his often-frightening journey from the Ocean Club holiday resort in Praia da Luz through many isolated parts of Portugal and Spain and finally into Germany. He meets numerous dark and unusual characters, some who live under the radar, and others who he believes hold the key to what happened to Maddie all those years ago. He points his finger firmly at the new prime suspect Christian Brueckner and explains, in detail and with the help of the people who knew Brueckner best, why he thinks he did it. He traces his grim upbringing, his ease of movement around Europe and also questions the integrity of the Portuguese police and asks if someone, somewhere is covering something up. With unrivalled access to official documents, exclusive interviews and confessions, no stone is left unturned as Jon searches for the truth, often putting himself in considerable danger in the process. This book is a must read for anyone interested in the case, or just someone planning a family holiday in Europe this year. WHAT THE CRITICS SAY SO FAR... "Tirelessly researched. Told me a lot of things I didn't know about the case" MARTIN BRUNT, SKY NEWS CRIME CORRESPONDENT "Jon is clearly about as steeped in the story as it's possible to be, and it's a fascinating account of the inner workings of what sounds like an extremely seedy place." SUSIE DOWDALL, DAILY MAIL "Jon Clarke is a remarkably experienced journalist who has dug deeply into the movements and life of German new-age traveler and fixated preferential sex offender Christian Brueckner, who should have been a prime suspect in 2007. "This book breaks a lot of new ground on the case and is a real investigative trawl and deep dive into the world of organized child traffickers... and he has interviews with all the key players from all over Europe. "It is an investigative man-hunt and Jon's book is compelling. He has a long heritage in the story and his crusade is journalistically sound and his journalistic instincts are sharp." This book was released on 2010-02-24 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's inquiry addresses concerns that the operation of libel laws and the impact of costs were stifling press freedom. It also considers the balance between personal privacy and press freedom, and the increasing use of injunctions and super-injunctions. It also examines press standards in the UK, particularly considering Madeleine McCann's disappearance, the suicides in and around Bridgend in 2008 and phone hacking and blagging. The Committee does not consider that it would be right to legislate on privacy. The Press Complaints Commission (PCC) should amend its Code to include a requirement that journalists notify the subject of their articles prior to publication, subject to a "public interest" test. The report also assesses the damage so called 'libel tourism' has caused to the UK's reputation as a country which protects free speech and freedom of expression. In cases where the UK is not the primary domicile or place of business of the claimant or defendant, the claimant should face additional hurdles before being allowed to bring a case. There is an urgent need to control defamation litigation costs more effectively. Competitive and commercial factors led to an inexcusable lowering of press standards in the gathering and publishing of 'news' about the McCann case, and self-regulation signally failed. The PCC should be renamed the Press Complaints and Standards Commission, reflecting its role as a regulator, not just a complaints handling service. The regulator should have the power to fine its members where it believes that the departure from the Code of Practice is serious enough to warrant a financial penalty.

Book excerpt: The National Book Award–winning author’s biographical novel of Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev: “Exuberant and exhilarating . . . a brilliant leap of imagination” (San Francisco Chronicle). In Dancer, Colum McCann tells the ballet icon’s story through the myriad voices of those who knew him. There is Anna Vasileva, Rudi’s first ballet teacher, who rescues her protégé from the stunted life of his provincial town; Yulia, whose sexual and artistic ambitions are thwarted by her Soviet-sanctioned marriage; and Victor, the Venezuelan street hustler, who reveals the lurid underside of the gay celebrity set. Spanning four decades and many worlds, from the horrors of the Second World War to the wild abandon of New York in the ‘80s, Dancer is peopled by a large cast of characters, obscure and famous: doormen and shoemakers, nurses and translators, Margot Fonteyn, Eric Bruhn, and John Lennon. And at the heart of the spectacle stands the artist himself, willful, lustful, and driven by a never-to-be-met need for perfection.

For Bruce and Denise Morcombe - the parents of Daniel - and his brothers, Bradley and Dean, it was apparent within hours that something was very wrong. In the first few days following Daniel's disappearance, Bruce and Denise made a promise to their son that they would never ever stop looking for him, and bring who was responsible to justice. 'We will never give up.' As the nightmare of hours became days then weeks, and months and years, the family mobilised to become the moral force behind the longest criminal investigation in Australia's history. Where is Daniel? covers the decade-long investigation into the disappearance of Daniel and the extraordinary courage, dignity, persistence and fortitude Bruce and Denise displayed under unbearable circumstances. This determination also applied to Bruce and Denise's desire to mine something positive from the darkest of experiences. They started the Daniel Morcombe Foundation in 2005, to teach children about safety, and have since visited hundreds of schools around Australia. They've established Australia's largest annual child safety day-of-action, 'Day for Daniel', and utilised the funds raised to support other children who have been the victims of abuse. Over a decade later, with Daniel's killer brought to justice thanks to an amazing covert police sting, this is the family's story. Where is Daniel? is a testament to the enduring power of love between parents and their child, and the strength and bonds of family to survive.

Book excerpt: In 1990, a young woman was strangled on a jogging path near the home of Pat Brown and her family. Brown suspected the young man who was renting a room in her house, and quickly uncovered strong evidence that pointed to him -- but the police dismissed her as merely a housewife with an overactive imagination. It would be six years before her former boarder would be brought in for questioning, but the night Brown took action to solve the murder was the beginning of her life's work. Pat Brown is now one of the nation's few female criminal profilers -- a sleuth who assists police departments and victims' families by analyzing both physical and behavioral evidence to make the most scientific determination possible about who committed a crime. Brown has analyzed many dozens of seemingly hopeless cases and brought new investigative avenues to light. In The Profiler, Brown opens her case files to take readers behind the scenes of bizarre sex crimes, domestic murders, and mysterious deaths, going face-to-face with killers, rapists, and brutalized victims. It's a rare, up-close, first-person look at the real world of police and profilers as they investigate crimes -- the good and bad, the cover-ups and the successes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the psychological factors in operation when we form groups or crowds, and how are these affected by socio-historical circumstances? History offers endless examples of different forms of human collectivity, both private and public, small-scale and large: from the primal horde to the modern nuclear family, from the Athenian polis to virtual internet communities. Within the context of shifting social bonds in global culture, this book brings together debates on the left from political philosophy, psychoanalysis, social psychology and media and cultural studies to explore the logic of the formation of collective identities from a new theoretical perspective. Challenging liberal-capitalist models of individualism, as well as postmodern identity politics, analysts here turn to Continental philosophy (Lacan, Derrida, Agamben, Laclau, Badiou, among others) in order to re-think collectivity in relation to questions of agency, alterity, affect, sovereignty, the national imaginary and the biopolitical. In the aftermath of the great mass movements of the twentieth century (Marxist-Leninism, Mao), which resulted in bureaucratic submission and the cult of the State, the fate of our collective identity today raises urgent questions about the future of collaborative activity, the role of mediating institutions in shaping mass psychology, what is at stake in a radical democracy, and what happens in a crowd.
