Book excerpt: This monograph traces, for the first time, the career of a prolific artist and muralist. From her beginnings in the 1990s as a graffiti artist in the local scene in Bautzen, Germany to large-scale public mural works on an international scale in more than 35 countries, MadC has become one of the most sought-after mural artists of our time.0For over 20 years, she has captivated global audiences with her own distinctive style of art. Characterised by abstract compositions of sweeping lines and transparent layers of vivid colours, her work has its roots in graffiti art but constantly blurs the lines between street art and fine art.0MadC has exhibited widely in art galleries and has created public murals in international locations from London (Shoreditch and Dulwich) and Berlin (Hellersdorf) to Jersey City (Journal Square) and Tahiti (Papeete). Her practice moves dynamically between the street, the studio and the gallery, making her mark in private and public spaces on a monumental scale.0Structured chronologically and lavishly illustrated, this vibrant publication charts the artist's early works through to the present day, with texts by writer and curator Luisa Heese.
Download or read book Street Fonts written by Claudia Walde and published by . This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic graffiti lettering and experimental typographical forms lie at the heart of street culture and have long inspired designers in many different fields. But graffiti artists, who tend to paint the same letters of their tag again and again, rarely design complete alphabets. Claudia Walde has spent over two years collecting alphabets by 154 artists from 30 countries with a view to showing the many different styles and approaches to lettering within the graffiti and street art cultures. All of the artists have roots in graffiti. Some are world renowned such as 123 Klan (Canada), Faith47 (South Africa) and Hera (Germany); others are lesser known or only now starting to emerge. Each artist received the same brief: to design all 26 letters of the Latin alphabet within the limits of a single page of the book. How they approached this task and selected the media with which to express their ideas was entirely up to them. The results are a fascinating insight into the creative process.

Book Synopsis London’s Urban Landscape by : Christopher Tilley
Download or read book London’s Urban Landscape written by Christopher Tilley and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London’s Urban Landscape is the first major study of a global city to adopt a materialist perspective and stress the significance of place and the built environment to the urban landscape. Edited by Christopher Tilley, the volume is inspired by phenomenological thinking and presents fine-grained ethnographies of the practices of everyday life in London. In doing so, it charts a unique perspective on the city that integrates ethnographies of daily life with an analysis of material culture. The first part of the volume considers the residential sphere of urban life, discussing in detailed case studies ordinary residential streets, housing estates, suburbia and London’s mobile ‘linear village’ of houseboats. The second part analyses the public sphere, including ethnographies of markets, a park, the social rhythms of a taxi rank, and graffiti and street art. London’s Urban Landscape returns us to the everyday lives of people and the manner in which they understand their lives. The deeply sensuous character of the embodied experience of the city is invoked in the thick descriptions of entangled relationships between people and places, and the paths of movement between them. What stories do door bells and house facades tell us about contemporary life in a Victorian terrace? How do antiques acquire value and significance in a market? How does living in a concrete megastructure relate to the lives of the people who dwell there? These and a host of other questions are addressed in this fascinating book that will appeal widely to all readers interested in London or contemporary urban life.

Book Synopsis Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity by : Richard Rorty
Download or read book Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity written by Richard Rorty and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-02-24 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 1989 book Rorty argues that thinkers such as Nietzsche, Freud, and Wittgenstein have enabled societies to see themselves as historical contingencies, rather than as expressions of underlying, ahistorical human nature or as realizations of suprahistorical goals. This ironic perspective on the human condition is valuable on a private level, although it cannot advance the social or political goals of liberalism. In fact Rorty believes that it is literature not philosophy that can do this, by promoting a genuine sense of human solidarity. A truly liberal culture, acutely aware of its own historical contingency, would fuse the private, individual freedom of the ironic, philosophical perspective with the public project of human solidarity as it is engendered through the insights and sensibilities of great writers. The book has a characteristically wide range of reference from philosophy through social theory to literary criticism. It confirms Rorty's status as a uniquely subtle theorist, whose writing will prove absorbing to academic and nonacademic readers alike.

Dave has been extremely prolific in the streets and in galleries and since 1996 has been designing skateboards for German Skateboard label Hessenmob. His original style and bold black lines, all hand-painted, are full of humor and often punctuated with lighthearted social commentary. He has painted anti-smoking and "get out the vote" posters and is often referred to as a "positive" graffiti artist. Many see him as someone just trying to bring a smile to his neighbors faces and some beauty to his run down neighborhood. This is the second publication in the Rebellion Series of monographs that focus on artists featured in the groundbreaking titles Art of Rebellion and Art of Rebellion 2, first published in 2004.
