Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elements of Artificial Neural Networks provides a clearly organized general introduction, focusing on a broad range of algorithms, for students and others who want to use neural networks rather than simply study them. The authors, who have been developing and team teaching the material in a one-semester course over the past six years, describe most of the basic neural network models (with several detailed solved examples) and discuss the rationale and advantages of the models, as well as their limitations. The approach is practical and open-minded and requires very little mathematical or technical background. Written from a computer science and statistics point of view, the text stresses links to contiguous fields and can easily serve as a first course for students in economics and management. The opening chapter sets the stage, presenting the basic concepts in a clear and objective way and tackling important -- yet rarely addressed -- questions related to the use of neural networks in practical situations. Subsequent chapters on supervised learning (single layer and multilayer networks), unsupervised learning, and associative models are structured around classes of problems to which networks can be applied. Applications are discussed along with the algorithms. A separate chapter takes up optimization methods. The most frequently used algorithms, such as backpropagation, are introduced early on, right after perceptrons, so that these can form the basis for initiating course projects. Algorithms published as late as 1995 are also included. All of the algorithms are presented using block-structured pseudo-code, and exercises are provided throughout. Software implementing many commonly used neural network algorithms is available at the book's website. Transparency masters, including abbreviated text and figures for the entire book, are available for instructors using the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering work provides in-depth coverage of 76 horror films produced in Australia, where serial killers, carnivorous animals, mutants, zombies, vampires and evil spirits all receive the "antipodean" cinematic treatment unique to the Land Down Under. Titles covered were released between 1973 and 2010, a period coinciding with the revival of the long-dormant Australian film industry in the early 1970s, and continuing into the second wave of genre production spurred by the international success of the 2005 chiller Wolf Creek. The Cars That Ate Paris, The Last Wave, Roadgames, Razorback, Outback Vampires, Queen of the Damned, Black Water, and The Reef are among the titles represented. Each film is covered in a chapter that includes a cast and credits list, release information, contemporary reviews and DVD availability, as well as a synopsis and in-depth notes about the story, filmmaking techniques, acting performances, recurring themes and motifs, and overall effectiveness of the film as a work of horror.

Book excerpt: The world of cybersecurity and the landscape that it possesses is changing on a dynamic basis. It seems like that hardly one threat vector is launched, new variants of it are already on the way. IT Security teams in businesses and corporations are struggling daily to fight off any cyberthreats that they are experiencing. On top of this, they are also asked by their CIO or CISO to model what future Cyberattacks could potentially look like, and ways as to how the lines of defenses can be further enhanced. IT Security teams are overburdened and are struggling to find ways in order to keep up with what they are being asked to do. Trying to model the cyberthreat landscape is a very laborious process, because it takes a lot of time to analyze datasets from many intelligence feeds. What can be done to accomplish this Herculean task? The answer lies in Artificial Intelligence (AI). With AI, an IT Security team can model what the future Cyberthreat landscape could potentially look like in just a matter of minutes. As a result, this gives valuable time for them not only to fight off the threats that they are facing, but to also come up with solutions for the variants that will come out later. Practical AI for Cybersecurity explores the ways and methods as to how AI can be used in cybersecurity, with an emphasis upon its subcomponents of machine learning, computer vision, and neural networks. The book shows how AI can be used to help automate the routine and ordinary tasks that are encountered by both penetration testing and threat hunting teams. The result is that security professionals can spend more time finding and discovering unknown vulnerabilities and weaknesses that their systems are facing, as well as be able to come up with solid recommendations as to how the systems can be patched up quickly.

Book excerpt: Advances in Modeling and Simulation in Textile Engineering: New Concepts, Methods, and Applications explains the advanced principles and techniques that can be used to solve textile engineering problems using numerical modeling and simulation. The book draws on innovative research and industry practice to explain methods for the modeling of all of these processes, helping readers apply computational power to more areas of textile engineering. Experimental results are presented and linked closely to processes and methods of implementation. Diverse concepts such as heat transfer, fluid dynamics, three-dimensional motion, and multi-phase flow are addressed. Finally, tools, theoretical principles, and numerical models are extensively covered. Textile engineering involves complex processes which are not easily expressed numerically or simulated, such as fiber motion simulation, yarn to fiber formation, melt spinning technology, optimization of yarn production, textile machinery design and optimization, and modeling of textile/fabric reinforcements. Provides new approaches and techniques to simulate a wide range of textile processes from geometry to manufacturing Includes coverage of detailed mathematical methods for textiles, including neural networks, genetic algorithms, and the finite element method Addresses modeling techniques for many different phenomena, including heat transfer, fluid dynamics and multi-phase flow

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pattern Recognition by Self-Organizing Neural Networks presentsthe most recent advances in an area of research that is becoming vitally important in the fields ofcognitive science, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and neural networks in general. The 19articles take up developments in competitive learning and computational maps, adaptive resonancetheory, and specialized architectures and biological connections. Introductorysurvey articles provide a framework for understanding the many models involved in various approachesto studying neural networks. These are followed in Part 2 by articles that form the foundation formodels of competitive learning and computational mapping, and recent articles by Kohonen, applyingthem to problems in speech recognition, and by Hecht-Nielsen, applying them to problems in designingadaptive lookup tables. Articles in Part 3 focus on adaptive resonance theory (ART) networks, selforganizing pattern recognition systems whose top-down template feedback signals guarantee theirstable learning in response to arbitrary sequences of input patterns. In Part 4, articles describeembedding ART modules into larger architectures and provide experimental evidence fromneurophysiology, event-related potentials, and psychology that support the prediction that ARTmechanisms exist in the brain. Book excerpt: Artificial neural networks are most suitable for solving problems that are complex, ill-defined, highly nonlinear, of many and different variables, and/or stochastic. Such problems are abundant in medicine, in finance, in security and beyond. This volume covers the basic theory and architecture of the major artificial neural networks. Uniquely, it presents 18 complete case studies of applications of neural networks in various fields, ranging from cell-shape classification to micro-trading in finance and to constellation recognition — all with their respective source codes. These case studies demonstrate to the readers in detail how such case studies are designed and executed and how their specific results are obtained. The book is written for a one-semester graduate or senior-level undergraduate course on artificial neural networks. It is also intended to be a self-study and a reference text for scientists, engineers and for researchers in medicine, finance and data mining.
