Book excerpt: This book studies the relationship between macroeconomic policies and urban-rural income gap in Egypt. A Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) technique is used by constructing a SAM for the Egyptian economy. The book explains steps for updating input-output tables as a method helping in constructing SAM. As a data system for description analysis, the constructed SAM is used in analyzing the structure of the Egyptian economy and studying the behavior of rural and urban households. The SAM multiplier, GINI and Pesudo factor coefficients are conducted to analyze the effects of different income sources on the rural-urban income gap. SAM multiplier matrix is benefited in specifying the total impact of each account (sector) on other accounts (sectors). Finally, SAM multiplier is also used in running some of policy simulations to assess the impact of macroeconomic policies on rural-urban income gap.

After developing and estimating an analytical model, it was found that underemployment, inflation, and government spending worsen income distribution, while productivity gains, the real interest rate, and the real exchange rate were found to be progressive instruments.

Book excerpt: The factors underlying the rise in U.S. income inequality since the mid-1970s are examined. The results suggest that the trend increase in income inequality has not been related to macroeconomic developments, such as income growth or import penetration, but that the income distribution is sensitive to the cycle. Important factors that do help explain the widening of the income distribution include the increased investment in technology and the decline in the minimum wage. The rise in the share of single female-headed households, the increased proportion of households headed by someone over the age of 35, and the fall in the child-dependency ratio also help explain movements in income shares.

Book excerpt: Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote in the Preface to his famous Discourse on Inequality that “I consider the subject of the following discourse as one of the most interesting questions philosophy can propose, and unhappily for us, one of the most thorny that philosophers can have to solve. For how shall we know the source of inequality between men, if we do not begin by knowing mankind?” (Rousseau, 1754). This citation of Rousseau appears in an article in Spanish where Dagum (2001), in the memory of whom this book is published, also cites Socrates who said that the only useful knowledge is that which makes us better and Seneca who wrote that knowing what a straight line is, is not important if we do not know what rectitude is. These references are indeed a good illustration of Dagum’s vast knowledge, which was clearly not limited to the ?eld of Economics. For Camilo the ?rst part of Rousseau’s citation certainly justi?ed his interest in the ?eld of inequality which was at the centre of his scienti?c preoccupations. It should however be stressed that for Camilo the second part of the citation represented a “solid argument in favor of giving macroeconomic foundations to microeconomic behavior” (Dagum, 2001). More precisely, “individualism and methodological holism complete each other in contributing to the explanation of individual and social behavior” (Dagum, 2001).
