Book excerpt: In the quest of identifying Civil War soldiers and sailors buried in cemeteries in Macomb County, Michigan, the stories of several veterans aroused the interest of the authors. To that end, extensive research began and culminated in the stories of the six veterans noted in this work. The stories begin with two cavalry sergeants, progress through the man widely credited with shooting Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart, then chronicling the prison experiences of an infantry officer, highlighting the career of the only Civil War general buried in Macomb County, and culminates with the military career of an 1812 soldier who served his country into the beginning of the Civil War. The individuals presented in this book were not heroes. They were not much different than others who served in this conflict. They might be considered victims of the circumstances in which they found themselves. They certainly displayed fortitude and resolve in performing the duties given them and assumed responsibility for the actions they undertook. They should be viewed as examples of what many of the participants in this conflict did, however difficult their circumstances. We salute them all.

Custer and the famed Michigan Cavalry Brigade "saved the Union." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes are the largest collection of fresh surface water on earth, and more than 40 million Americans and Canadians live in their basin. Will we divert water from the Great Lakes, causing them to end up like Central Asia's Aral Sea, which has lost 90 percent of its surface area and 75 percent of its volume since 1960? Or will we come to see that unregulated water withdrawals are ultimately catastrophic? Peter Annin writes a fast-paced account of the people and stories behind these upcoming battles. Destined to be the definitive story for the general public as well as policymakers, The Great Lakes Water Wars is a balanced, comprehensive look behind the scenes at the conflicts and compromises that are the past-and future-of this unique resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does the University of Illinois campus at Urbana-Champaign look as it does today? Drawing on a wealth of research and featuring more than one hundred color photographs, An Illini Place provides an engrossing and beautiful answer to that question. Lex Tate and John Franch trace the story of the university's evolution through its buildings. Oral histories, official reports, dedication programs, and developmental plans both practical and quixotic inform the story. The authors also provide special chapters on campus icons and on the buildings, arenas and other spaces made possible by donors and friends of the university. Adding to the experience is a web companion that includes profiles of the planners, architects, and presidents instrumental in the campus's growth, plus an illustrated inventory of current and former campus plans and buildings.

Book excerpt: The first Earth Day is the most famous little-known event in modern American history. Because we still pay ritual homage to the planet every April 22, everyone knows something about Earth Day. Some people may also know that Earth Day 1970 made the environmental movement a major force in American political life. But no one has told the whole story before. The story of the first Earth Day is inspiring: it had a power, a freshness, and a seriousness of purpose that are difficult to imagine today. Earth Day 1970 created an entire green generation. Thousands of Earth Day organizers and participants decided to devote their lives to the environmental cause. Earth Day 1970 helped to build a lasting eco-infrastructure—lobbying organizations, environmental beats at newspapers, environmental-studies programs, ecology sections in bookstores, community ecology centers. In The Genius of Earth Day, the prizewinning historian Adam Rome offers a compelling account of the rise of the environmental movement. Drawing on his experience as a journalist as well as his expertise as a scholar, he explains why the first Earth Day was so powerful, bringing one of the greatest political events of the twentieth century to life.
