Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in the early 80s, this book brings to life the fascinating story of pipeliners, politicians and the chase for the big energy dollars. Franois Bregha discusses the implications of the federal Liberal government's 1980 decision to support the prebuild of a section of the Alaska Highway pipeline project, permitting the export of Alberta gas to American markets at a time when Canada was struggling to conserve non-renewable resources. Bregha traces the steps by which the Liberal government concluded a bad deal, under intense pressure from the Alberta government, Alberta gas producers and the ever-active Bob Blair, whose Foothills company stood to gain huge windfall profits from the project. Bob Blair's Pipeline is a fascinating account of conflict and accomodation between business and several levels of government in the highly-charged field of northern energy development.

Book excerpt: National parks are one of the most important and successful institutions in global environmentalism. Since their first designation in the United States in the 1860s and 1870s they have become a global phenomenon. The development of these ecological and political systems cannot be understood as a simple reaction to mounting environmental problems, nor can it be explained by the spread of environmental sensibilities. Shifting the focus from the usual emphasis on national parks in the United States, this volume adopts an historical and transnational perspective on the global geography of protected areas and its changes over time. It focuses especially on the actors, networks, mechanisms, arenas, and institutions responsible for the global spread of the national park and the associated utilization and mobilization of asymmetrical relationships of power and knowledge, contributing to scholarly discussions of globalization and the emergence of global environmental institutions and governance.

Book excerpt: For the purpose of publication of these Proceedings, the original conference programme has been rearranged to provide a more logical sequence of presentation. The beginning sections give the inaugural speech and the six keynote addresses which were delivered at the opening plenary session. Following these are the working papers, published more or less in the same sequence in which they were presented in the original programme. The order of presentation does not necessarily emphasise the importance of any one aspect of the Arctic Systems over others. The final reports of the six working groups and their conclusions and recommendations are edited in such a manner as to present them in a standardised format for easy comprehension. The editors accept responsibility for any distortion inadvertently introduced in the summarising and editing processes. Later sections of the Proceedings give a background to the Conference organization and deliberations, and an independent critique of the meeting. The directors and those who attended the Conference were conscious of the debt of gratitude owed by them to the Conference chairmen, rapporteurs, authors of working papers, and many individuals for their contributions to the success of the meeting. We wish to thank them and it is a pleasure to record their names in these Proceedings. Inaugural Speaker Dr. J. Rennie Whitehead, Canada Banquet Guest Speaker Honourable Mr. T. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Klondike Gold Rush is one of the most widely known events in Canadian history, particularly outside Canada, the rest of the Yukon's long and diverse history attracts little attention. Important developments such as Herschel Island whaling, pre-1900 fur trading, the post-World War II resource boom, a lengthy struggle for responsible government, and the emergence of Aboriginal political protest remain poorly understood. Placing well-known historical episodes within the broader sweep of the past, Land of the Midnight Sun gives particular emphasis to the role of First Nations people and the lengthy struggle of Yukoners to find their place within Confederation. This broader story incorporates the introduction of mammoth dredges that scoured the Klondike creeks, the impressive Elsa-Keno Hill silver mines, the impact of residential schools on Aboriginal children, the devastation caused by the sinking of the Princess Sophia, the Yukon's remarkable contributions to the national World War I effort, and the sweeping transformations associated with the American occupation during World War II. Completely revised with a new epilogue, the bestselling Land of the Midnight Sun was first published in 1988 and became the standard source for understanding the history of the Yukon. Ken Coates and William Morrison have published ten books together, including Strange Things Done: A History of Murder in the Yukon and the forthcoming Trailmarkers: A History of Landmark Aboriginal Rights Cases in Canada. Land of the Midnight Sun was their first collaboration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mackenzie Valley natural gas pipeline debate included many actors. This is the first in-depth study in comparative religious ethics to examine the debate with a particular focus on the role of the Canadian churches. In 1974 twenty-seven of the world’s largest oil and natural gas companies applied for permission to build a pipeline through the Mackenzie Valley to transport Alaskan and northern Canadian gas to large southern markets. Many northern native peoples opposed the proposal and called for a moratorium on major northern development projects until native land claims had been settled. The mainline Canadian Christian churches supported the call for a moratorium and, through the interchurch coalition, Project North, campaigned against the pipeline. However, some native peoples supported the proposal to build the pipeline, and many of the pipeline’s proponents were members of churches that called for a moratorium on the project. This case study in comparative religious ethics, though written from a pro-moratorium stand, attempts to clarify the debate. Conflicting responses to the pipeline proposal are assessed in relation to “hard facts” concerning the need for northern gas in the South, social-scientific findings regarding the impact of the pipeline on native communities, the rights of native peoples to participate in decisions affecting their lives, assumptions about the way of life of non-native people in the South and the role of religious convictions in public choices. This thoroughly researched study reveals the inner workings and influences of the Canadian churches involved and illustrates their commitment on behalf of the northern natives opposed to the project.
