Book excerpt: The publication Lewerentz Fragments introduces new scholarship on the architect’s motivations and compiles new essays from all the major scholars on his work, for the first time in one volume presenting both historical and critical perspectives. Through new essays, recently discovered archival material, photography, and drawings, the publication Lewerentz Fragments explores the architect’s body of work spanning three-quarters of the twentieth century. Comprising writings from all the major scholars on Lewerentz’ work, along with several new voices, this publication offers new insight into the context surrounding this architect’s work. Rather than focusing on a single thesis, the book offers a diversity of insight from multiple cultural and professional perspectives. In addition, previously unpublished translations of interviews and dialogs among the architect and his contemporaries offer a voice to the ‘silent architect’ altering the traditional interpretations of the work and digging past the surface of what might be considered his philosophy of building. Rather than serving as an introduction to the architect’s work, this volume provides detailed fragments as a deep and diverse dive into one of the most mysterious of Scandinavia’s modern masters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An astounding treasury of drawings and plans from one of the 20th century's greatest architects, offering unprecedented insight into his design process "The importance of a drawing is immense, because it's the architect's language," famed architect Louis Kahn, one of the most significant architects of the 20th century, told his masterclass in 1967. While much of his built work has been heavily studied, this publication chooses instead to focus on Kahn's prolific arsenal of drawings and plans, some of which were never realized. The Importance of a Drawingprovides an in-depth look into the subtleties of Kahn's designs, featuring incisive analysis from architectural experts and over 600 high-quality reproductions of work by Kahn and his associates. A testament to the architect's meticulous craft, this volume is an essential addition to the library of established designers as well as students of architecture. Louis Kahn(1901-74) was an Estonian-born American architect who worked in Philadelphia for the majority of his life. Inspired early in his career by European medievalism and later the ruins of much older civilizations, Kahn was notable for his ability to meld the modernist tendencies of his time with the classical poise of ancient monuments. Some of his major designs include the National Parliament House in Dhaka, Bangladesh and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California. Some of Kahn's unrealized projects, such as the Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island, have since been constructed posthumously. Kahn taught at Yale School of Architecture from 1947 to 1957 and then at the University of Pennsylvania until his death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive monograph on Swedish modernist architect Sigurd Lewerentz. Sigurd Lewerentz (1885-1975) is one of the most highly revered--as well as one of the most heavily mythologized--protagonists of modern European architecture. Arguably Sweden's most distinguished modernist, he is more influential for architects around the world today than he was during his lifetime. Countless architecture lovers from around the world visit his buildings. Stockholm's woodland cemetery Skogskyrkogården, his most significant contribution to landscape design, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This authoritative new monograph on Sigurd Lewerentz is based on extensive research undertaken at ArkDes, Sweden's national center for architecture and design, where his archive and personal library are kept. It features a wealth of drawings and sketches, designs for furniture and interiors, model photographs, and more from his estate, most of which are published here for the first time, alongside new photographs of his realized buildings. Essays by leading experts explore Lewerentz's life and work, his legacy, and lasting significance from a contemporary perspective. This substantial, beautifully designed book offers the most comprehensive survey to date of Lewerentz's achievements in all fields of his multifaceted work.

Book excerpt: 25 Tropical Houses in Singapore and Malaysia features top architects and designers with ideas that are stylish, contemporary, and show twenty-first century savvy. The difference between a house and a home cannot easily be explained, but anyone walking into a building that is a home, rather than a house, can almost immediately feel the difference. While called 25 Tropical Houses in Singapore and Malaysia, this book is at its heart about buildings that share a common spirit: structures that are home to a diverse cross-section of families around Singapore and Malaysia. Positioned as a global city at the hub of South East Asia, Singapore has a thoroughly modern sensibility balanced by an inherited culture and sense of place. This new global consciousness is reflected in its architecture, which demonstrates a seamless marriage of vernacular and modernist forms. The luxury homes in this book illustrate how architects work with, rather than against, the singular landscape to generate beautiful tropical homes embellished with modern Asian decor. A new wave of highly distinctive architecture has seen Singapore recognized, for the first time, as one of the world's most dynamic architectural centers. Malaysian architecture retains a greater interest in vernacular forms, but the nation's strong economic growth has seen a push to recast the urban landscape. Architects are now working to accommodate the 'brave new world' of an affluent technocratic society within the Asian architecture vernacular currently found throughout most of the country. The most interesting new homes in Malaysia reflect a balance between traditional values and an optimistic global outlook. 25 Tropical Houses in Singapore and Malaysia is an amazing source of home inspiration and insights, whether one seeks to know more about Singapore architecture, Malaysian traditions or tropical architecture in general. Architects featured in this book include: SCDA WOHA Bedmar and Shi CSYA Kevin Low K2LD Seksan WOW Architects John Heah
