Book excerpt: Power and machinery is a single largest cost component, constituting about 60% of the total investment cost on mechanized farm. The profit of a farm depends, to a great extent, on the appropriate mechanization planning of the farm. Selection of proper size of power source(s) and its matching equipment is of paramount importance for an efficient mechanization planning. The bottleneck in the farm mechanization planning has been due to complexity of available machinery systems and their diversity with respect to type, size, number and operational characteristics. The process is further complicated in multiple cropping farms. Several models have been developed for the selection of agricultural machinery system using different techniques, like, linear programming, heuristic models, dynamic programming, and least cost approach. All those models were crop and location specific. This book describes the development of computer based mathematical models using least cost technique and a software for the selection of optimum power and machinery system. The developed models were validated for paddy-wheat crop rotation of Northern India.

Effective and efficient food delivery systems are built around processes that maximize efforts while minimizing cost and time. This comprehensive reference is for engineers who design and build machinery and processing equipment, shipping containers, and packaging and storage equipment. It includes coverage of microwave vacuum applications in grain processing, cacao processing, fruit and vegetable processing, ohmic heating of meat, facility design, closures for glass containers, double seaming, and more. The book's chapters include an excellent overview of food engineering, but also regulation and safety information, machinery design for the various stages of food production, from tillage, to processing and packaging. Each chapter includes the state-of-the art in technology for each subject and numerous illustrations, tables and references to guide the reader through key concepts. - Describes the latest breakthroughs in food production machinery - Features new chapters on engineering properties of food materials, UAS applications, and microwave processing of foods - Provides efficient access to fundamental information and presents real-world applications - Includes design of machinery and facilities as well as theoretical bases for determining and predicting behavior of foods as they are handled and processed

Book excerpt: This publication gives a wide-ranging perspective on the present state of mechanization in the developing world, and, as such, constitutes a solid platform on which to build strategies for a sustainable future. Farm mechanization forms an integral plank in the implementation of sustainable crop production intensification methodologies and sustainable intensification necessarily means that the protection of natural resources and the production of ecosystem services go hand-in-hand with intensified production practices. This requires specific mechanization measures to allow crops to be established with minimum soil disturbance, to allow the soil to be protected under organic cover for as long as possible, and to establish crop rotations and associations to feed the soil and to exploit crop nutrients from various soil horizons. This work is the starting point to help the reader understand the complexities and requirements of the task ahead.

Book excerpt: Farm Mechanisation in a Developing Economy presents an objective and plausible attempt to study the phenomenon of adoption of innovations through the interdisciplinary approach. The Book contains useful information on status of farm mechanisation in five cropping patterns of Punjab and also the socio-economic profile of farmers in these areas. It also provides appraisal of the different models of adoption and defusion along with critical review of research studies conducted on farm mechanisation in various disciplines. Moreover, prediction models developed through multivariate analysis and meant for estimation of adoption levels of agricultural engineering technologies have been specified. The innovative component of the book includes detailed procedure outlined for developing a knowledge test and statistical techniques for testing regression models for various deficiencies. Finaly, the strategies for enhancing the levels of farm mechanisation have been proposed. Contents Chapter 1: Introduction; Chapter 2: Review of Related Research; Chapter 3: Theoretical Orientation; Chapter 4: Research Methodology; Chapter 5: Findings and Discussion; Chapter 6: Summary and Conclusions.

Book excerpt: This last volume of the Energy in World Agriculture series is in many ways the series' Alpha and its Omega. It addresses the broad issues related to the use of energy in agricultural production, and also characterizes and quantifies the energy involvements of many agricultural production technologies. It is a compilation of descriptive and analytical information and design principles and data of energy use in this field. A significant aspect is the relationship between energy and agricultural productivity, increased knowledge and resulting improved management of energy-consuming operations on the farm. Information provided here has not been published elsewhere before. Throughout the book are examples of the important role that energy inputs have played in increasing productivity of the world's agricultural systems. Together with a revived interest in energy for agricultural production due to increases in energy costs, this volume meets that interest with valuable information and insights.

Book excerpt: This framework presents ten interrelated principles/elements to guide Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization in Africa (SAMA). Further, it presents the technical issues to be considered under SAMA and the options to be analysed at the country and sub regional levels. The ten key elements required in a framework for SAMA are as follows: The analysis in the framework calls for a specific approach, involving learning from other parts of the world where significant transformation of the agricultural mechanization sector has already occurred within a three-to-four decade time frame, and developing policies and programmes to realize Africa’s aspirations of Zero Hunger by 2025. This approach entails the identification and prioritization of relevant and interrelated elements to help countries develop strategies and practical development plans that create synergies in line with their agricultural transformation plans. Given the unique characteristics of each country and the diverse needs of Africa due to the ecological heterogeneity and the wide range of farm sizes, the framework avoids being prescriptive.
