Equations and formulas are put into such a form as to afford a. Ready means of application to problems under consideration. Numerical examples and data from practice illustrating principles are introduced wher ever it seems that a clear understanding can be brought about in this way. The data thus presented have been gathered from numerous sources during the last fifteen years. That coming from modern practice is always given the preference, however, except where the older matter is undoubtedly the most valuable. When ever possible, the results of practice or experiments as presented by some engineer or experimenter which fairly well represent the general experience along their lines are given in preference to abstract statements. This is believed to be the most satisfactory method, since it affords a means of studying all the facts incidental to the particular case, in addition to furnishing information fully as well as abstract statements. The publications of engineering societies and engineering journals have been freely consulted. Much kindness has been shown by the representatives of engineering and manufacturing concerns, who have invariably been kind in answering inquiries, and many of them have furnished valuable data. Whenever possible, credit for such information is given in connection with the informa tion itself, but much of it was of such a nature as to make it im possible to separate it from general statements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Machine Design, Vol. 2: Chiefly on Engine Details The general data of the strength of materials and the laws relating to the dependence of dimensions on straining actions are given in Part I. But in the cases to which these laws are applied in Part I. The straining actions are generally steady or statical, or may for practical purposes be treated as being so. In the design of Transmissive Machinery, which is treated of in Part I., in addition to questions of strength, kinematical problems are those most commonly presented. In Pairt II which relates to machines the object of which is to supply mechanical energy for doing work, the parts of which move at varying speeds, and are subjected to varying forces of inertia which are too large to be neglected, dynamical principles find a more frequent application. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Machine Design or Chiefly on Engine Details, Vol. 2 IN the first two chapters of Part I. Of this work, the qualities and properties of the ordinary materials of construction are discussed, and also the general nature of the straining actions to which machines are subjected and the principles on which working limits of stress are determined. The third chapter contains a statement of most of the formulae con necting the stress and dimensions of a structure when subjected to tension, bending, torsion, and other straining actions. It is not necessary to repeat what has been there said, but the following tables of the properties of materials are so often wanted for reference that it is desirable to reprint them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Machine Design One can never become a machine designer by studying books. Much help may come from books, but the true designer must have judgment, ripened by experience, in. Constructing and operating machines. One may know the laws that govern the development, transmission and application of energy; may have knowledge of constructive materials; may know how to obtain results by mathematical processes, and yet be unable to design a good machine. There is also needed a knowledge of many things connected with manufacture, transportation, erection and operation. With this knowledge it is possible to take results of computation and accept, reject and modify until a machine is produced that will do the required work satisfactorily. Professor John E. Sweet once said, It is comparatively easy to design a good new machine, but it is very hard to design a machine that will be good when it is old. A machine must not only do its work at first, but must continue to do it with a minimum of repairs as long as the work needs to be done. The designer must be able to foresee the results of machine operation; he must have imagination. This is an inborn power, but it may be developed by use and by engineering experience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Machine Design This book is the outgrowth of the experience of the authors in teaching Machine Design to engineering students in Sibley College, Cornell University. It presupposes a knowledge of Mechanism and Mechanics of Engineering. While the former subject is a logical part of Machine Design, it may be, and usually is, for convenience, treated separately and in advance of that portion of the subject which treats of the proportioning of machine parts so that they will withstand the loads applied. The same logical order is usually followed in actual designing, as it is, ordinarily, necessary and convenient to outline the mechanism before proportioning the various members. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Machine Design IT may perhaps be inferred from the need of a Fourth Edition of this Treatise within less than five years from its first publication, that it has proved useful to those for whom it was intended. That an English Text-book of Machine Design was likely to be serviceable was very apparent to the author, but to write such a Text-book satisfactorily involves not only much practical knowledge, but consider able labour in comparing the dimensions which workshop experience has shown to be necessary, with those deduced on mechanical principles from the forces acting in the machine, so far as they are known. Probably no one is more aware than the author how far this Treatise falls short of what such a Treatise might be. It is pleasant, therefore, to have reason to think that, in spite of defects and omis sions, it has not altogether failed in its purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Machine Design, Vol. 1: Fastenings Scientific analysis and the records of practice are both essential to success in the design of machine members, but neither alone is trustworthy. The former predicts only those stresses which pre vail under normal conditions and ignores the overload, the rough handling, or the slight accident which the machine may meet and against which it should not fail. Practical data, on the other hand, show only the proportions which constructors have given in specific cases of stress and service and empirical formulae founded upon them may give results wide of the mark, if the inherent limitations of these formula be exceeded. The problem of design is one whose many elements vary continually in num ber, character, and magnitude, and, for its solution, theoretical analysis, precedent, and the ripened judgment of the designer are required. Elsewhere acknowledgment has been made of the courtesy of the many officials and companies who have furnished information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Machine Design, Vol. 1: Kinematics of Machinery IN these notes an attempt is made, first, to give, as clearly and concisely as possible, the principles of mechanical motion in such a manner that their application can readily be made to any mechanism for determining the motion of any of its parts; then to show the methods of dealing with such problems as the designer meets daily. Long and tedious discussions have been avoided as far as possible, it is hoped, fully. Subjects such as toothed gearing and couplings are taken up only to the extent of the forms that are in the most common use. But with these subjects, as well as all others, references to what are believed to be the best works in their lines are given frequently. All available works on the subject have been freely consulted, but in no case has any matter which has not become common property by its frequent publication been used without the consent of its author. The exceedingly clear and concise work of Prof. Albert W. Smith, of Stanford University, entitled Machine Design, has been of most valuable assistance throughout. This work includes both kinematics and mechanics. To Prof. Smith, especially, the writer would acknowledge his obligations and express his thanks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constructor: A Hand-Book of Machine Design The freedom with which the author has drawn from English and American sources as well as from Continental practice gives the work a value not found in other treatises upon machine de sign, while the vast improvement which has been made by the introduction of the kinematic analysis and_the resulting classification of the details of the subject, cannot fail to appeal to the instructor as well as to the practising engineer. The translation has been made from the Fourth Enlarged German Edition of 1889, the last which has appeared in the original, and is complete and unabridged in every respect. The introduction to this edition is especially worthy of note, as it contains the author's summary of the principles set forth in his larger work on Theoretical Kinematics, and the more so as it includes a brief glance at the still wider subject included in his work on Applied Kinematics, as yet unpublished in Germany, and embodying a mass of manuscript which it is trusted will at no: distant day be given to the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elementary Principles of Machine Design Wm it is true that there are several very excellent works on machine design before the public, it is also unfortunately the case that we have no simple and cheap work which begins at the begin ning and leads the student on by gradual and easy steps to an ac quaintance With the more important departments of the subject. The object of the writer in preparing the present little volume is to supply this want and to furnish a stepping stone, as it were, to the study of more elaborate works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Engineering Drawing and Design, Vol. 2: Including Practical Geometry, Plane and Solid, and Machine and Engine Drawing and Design; Machine and Engine Drawing and Design All such details, as bolts and nuts, keys and other small and repeated parts, should be left until the size and position of the leading parts have been, finally fixed and drawn, otherwise an alteration in a leading part means a rubbing out of all the details. When the object contains a number of similar parts such as bolts and nuts, the similar circles and lines of each should be drawn in together, and not by finishing each one separately. As far as possible, the student should aim at not having to take a dimension for the same part from his scale or rule more than once. In many of the following examples an effort is made to show the order in which the different parts should be drawn, for it is quite impossible to design properly unless the relation of the different parts to each other is fully and clearly recognised. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Machine Design: An Introduction to the Principles Which Determine the Arrangement and Proportions of the Parts of Machines, and a Collection of Rules for Machine Design Many rules for machine design are rational in form, but are affected by arbitrary coefficients, intended to allow for contingencies which are neglected. In such cases, the arbitrary part of the rule has, in this treatise, generally been distinguished from the rational part. Thus, in dealing with shafting, the diameter is determined by the law of torsional resistance, but the coefficients, in the rules ordinarily given, are made up of two parts, one belonging to the rational formula for torsional resistance, the other, an arbitrary factor of safety, which is intended to make allowance for the nu determined bending action. In this treatise, the two parts of the coefficient are kept separate, so that it may be seen what amount of undetermined straining action is actually allowed for.
