Book excerpt: Thousands of Macedonians called Montana their home during the first few decades of the 20th century. They left their manufacturing jobs in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio and flocked into Montana, where they joined thousands of others laboring under the open sky to create one of America's most extensive railroad networks. For many of these migrant workers, their stay in Montana was brief - they eventually returned to the Midwest or to their native Macedonia. However, some Macedonians remained in Big Sky Country forever. Big Sky Macedonians explores the immigration of Macedonians to Montana in two parts. The first part analyzes data and trends for 645 Macedonians who ventured into Montana for employment, while the second part journeys through the lives of those Macedonians who sealed their fate in Montana. Sinadinoski offers a comprehensive and personal overview of a segment of Macedonian-American history that has hitherto been largely ignored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When George Pirinsky arrived in America in 1923, he had little money and little understanding of the English language and American culture. In a few short years, however, he became the leader of the largest Macedonian movement in the country, and by the 1940s he evolved into a nationally admired speaker, writer and organizer for all matters progressive and Slavic. But his vocal and ceaseless support for these causes met fierce resistance from many, including fascist organizations, the FBI, immigration officials, and the United States Congress. What follows in these pages is the story of the life and persecution of George Pirinsky in America.

For thousands of Macedonians who settled in Granite City and its environs during the first decades of the 20th century, life in the New World was in many ways the same as in the Old World. These Macedonians may have escaped their impoverished and enslaved homeland for prospects of prosperity and freedom in America, but Macedonia followed them across the ocean to the saloons, factories, and boarding houses of Granite City. The First Macedonian Colony explores the Macedonian immigrant experience in Granite City during the early 20th century. It examines the monopoly that the wealthy Macedonian bankers and businessmen held over the local Macedonians; details the political and ethnic rivalries of the Macedonians, Greeks and Bulgarians; and chronicles ordinary Macedonians as they integrated into American society all while preserving their Macedonian identity and culture. This little-known story of America's first Macedonian settlement carries readers on a rousing voyage that will challenge all preconceived notions about the history of Macedonian immigration to America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to one of the significant peoples of the Balkan peninsula, this book presents the achievements and problems of the Macedonians from ancient times to the present. Most Macedonians today live in Yugoslavia, where they comprise one of the five major national groups and dominate one of the six federated Republics, but a sizable number reside in Bulgaria and Greece. The introductory chapter outlines the complex geography, ethnography, and ancient history of the Balkans. The mysterious Macedonians of the Classical Period vanished with Philip and Alexander, to be replaced in the 6th and 7th centuries AD by a Slavic people who came from the Russo-Polish-Ukranian plains in the Great Migration to the Byzantine empire. The Macedonians adopted Eastern Orthodoxy, and their language, written in Cyrillic script, became one of three principal languages of Yugoslavia. The Macedonians have preserved a rich cultural identity through thirteen centuries of political turmoil and partition. Macedonia--including the Greek and Bulgarian parts--has distinctive customs, folklore, art, and architecture.

Book excerpt: Macedonia has been contested by its three neighbours – Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece – during and since the demise of the Ottoman Empire. But the Macedonian Question extends far beyond the contested borders of Macedonia to immigrant communities in Europe, Australia and North America. The contributors to this collection explore the contemporary repercussions of the Macedonian Question, which has long been at the heart of Balkan politics. The volume recognises Macedonia as a global issue, and focuses on the politics of identity and difference in both homeland and diaspora. The contributors argue that Macedonia as place and as concept is forged within a transnational network of diasporas, local communities, states and international institutions. They examine the increasingly important role of transnational bodies – including the European Union and human rights NGOs – in regulating relationships between states and minority groups, as well as in promoting multiculturalism and civic participation. They consider the role of scholarship and the media in defining Macedonia and its inhabitants. They also draw attention to the struggles of individuals in constructing, negotiating and even transforming their identities in the face of competing nationalisms and memories. In the process, they re-evaluate ‘ethnicity’ as a conceptual tool for understanding difference in the region, and raise questions about the implications of recognising, and not recognising, difference at the political level.

Book excerpt: This book by the League of Macedonian Americans (LOMA) is a beginner's guide to the wealth of information that exists on the Macedonian identity and Macedonian Cause before Tito came to power in the mid-1940s. While it is only a compilation of quotes, it also provides the readers with sources and resources to further read and understand. Additionally, in these words of Macedonian heroes and foreign observers, we can find the strength and courage to defend our Macedonian name and honor; with this publication, we have another weapon in our arsenal against Balkan propaganda.
