Holinshed se basó a su vez en Historia Gentis Scotorum (Historia de los escoceses), obra escrita en latín por el autor escocés Hector Boece e impresa por primera vez en París en 1527. Para agradar a su mecenas, el rey Jacobo V de Escocia, Boece había oscurecido deliberadamente la figura de Macbeth, con el fin de exaltar a un hipotético antepasado del rey, Banquo.
