Book Synopsis The Acquisition of Complex Sentences by : Holger Diessel
Download or read book The Acquisition of Complex Sentences written by Holger Diessel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive study of how children acquire complex sentences. Drawing on observational data from English-speaking children aged 2 to 5, Holger Diessel investigates the acquisition of infinitival and participial complement clauses, finite complement clauses, finite and nonfinite relative clauses, adverbial clauses, and coordinate clauses. His investigation shows that the development of complex sentences originates from simple non-embedded sentences and that two different developmental pathways can be distinguished: complex sentences including complement and relative clauses evolve from simple sentences that are gradually expanded to multiple-clause constructions, and complex sentences including adverbial and coordinate clauses develop from simple sentences that are integrated in a specific biclausal unit. He argues that the acquisition process is determined by a variety of factors: the frequency of the various complex sentences in the ambient language, the semantic and syntactic complexity of the emerging constructions, the communicative functions of complex sentences, and the social-cognitive development of the child.
Download or read book ABC and Beyond written by Elaine Weitzman and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hanen Centre's newest guidebook brings to life the most current research on promoting children's emergent literacy in early childhood classrooms. With the goal of preparing preschool children to learn to read and write successfully, ABC and Beyond shows educators how they can build language and literacy learning naturally into everyday conversations and activities. By translating the most current research into user-friendly strategies for educators, ABC and Beyond addresses the various prerequisites of literacy, including vocabulary, story comprehension, decontextualized (abstract) language, print knowledge and phonological awareness. More than 120 color photographs and many easy-to follow charts with detailed, practical examples beautifully illustrate how the strategies are applied in real-life contexts.

Top language researchers developed these standardized, parent-completed report forms - CDIs for English speakers, Inventarios for Spanish speakers - designing the forms to focus on current behaviors and salient emergent behaviors that parents can recognize and track. Both the CDIs and the Inventarios have three components: A "words and gestures" form. The CDI: Words and Gestures is for use with children ages 8-16 months, while Inventario I: Primeras Palabras y Gestos is for 8-18 months. In both the forms, the first part prompts parents to document the child's understanding of hundreds of early vocabulary items separated into semant
