The structure of lymphoid organs includes primary lymphoid organs, secondary lymphoid organs and tertiary lymphoid organs. Primary lymphoid organs produce lymphocytes, the spleen and lymph nodes, through immature progenitor cells. Secondary lymphoid organs maintain mature lymphocytes, while initiating adaptive immune response. Tertiary lymphoid organs (TLOs) develop in peripheral tissues in adult organisms as a response to non-resolving inflammation. TLOs related diseases include chronic infection, allograft rejection, cancer and autoimmune diseases. They contain an active germinal center which is surrounded by a network of follicular dendritic cells (FDCs). The lymphatic system as a whole provides accessory return route for the blood. Furthermore, immune defense is another significant function of the lymphatic system. However, it has paid relatively little attention to important developmental processes underlying the formation of the tissues themselves that carry out immune responses in humans and other mammalians. In contrast to the thymus and bone marrow that are the sole tissues for generating mature leukocytes for antigen recognition and han¬dling in humans and most mammalian species, the peripheral lymphoid tissues where adaptive immune responses are focused display broad tissue distribution and possess diverse archi¬tectural characteristics. These organs develop prior to the individual’s exposure to external antigens, and despite their similar functions, their varied appearances indicate a substantial complexity of tissue ontogeny. This volume presents a comprehensive overview of the developmental features of the major peripheral lymphoid organs, thus examining the connection between immunological functionality and structural characteristics utilizing a developmental approach, for an audience ranging from undergraduate students to senior researchers in immunology, histology and clinical medicine.

The conference is obliged to Professor K. E. Fichtelius for his initiative in establishing the meeting, as well as for the assistance of his staff at the Department of Histology in organizing the meetings. At the University of Uppsala inquiries into the lymphatic system go back to the 17th century and are marked by milestones, such as Olof Rudbeck's discovery of the thoracic duct in 1651 and August Hammar's fundamental work on the thymus in the beginning of this century. So one is justified to s~ that the conference gathered on historical ground. The organizing committee, naturally, hopes that the achievements presented at the conference will contribute to and provide significant advances in the history of lymphatic research. The material presented in this volume displ~s a great diversity of methods and the ingenuity of different investigators in their experimental designs. It is also apparent that contemporary research on lymphatic tissues or cells no longer recognizes the artificial borderline of morphologic ve~8U8 functional. It has become a multi disciplinary affair in which an increasing number of different specialists are working closely together. Apparently this is one reason why so many new and important discoveries have been made recently.
