Book excerpt: The occurrence of lungworms of the genus Protostrongylus in bighorn sheep (Ovis c. canadensis') has been known since the 1920's but the complex system which involves lungworms, bighorn sheep, and the environ ment remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of nutrition and other environmental factors in lungworm infections. Two neighbor ing bighorn sheep herds in the mountains of west-central Alberta were studied from September 1972 to May 1974. Seasonal variation in the rate of lungworm larvae shedding in the feces of two bighorn sheep herds was documented. Two distinct periods of shedding were apparent. These were approximately coincident with summer and winter, summer being a period of low larval shedding and winter a period of a higher rate of shedding. The possibility that this phenomenon could be the result of dilution or concentration of larvae in a seasonally variable fecal mass was discussed. Seasonal variation in the qualitative nutrition of the two sheep herds was evaluated using fecal nitrogen as an index for the estimation of forage crude protein, digestibility and gross energy content. Fecal protein (N X 6.25) proved to be a useful tool for the purposes of this study. Simulated energy positions of both sheep herds for both winter periods of the study were compared using a bioenergetics model construc ted with values from domestic and wild ruminant literature. The resulting observation was that although the energy position of both sheep herds declined from one winter to the next, lungworm burdens, as evaluated by larvae counts, fell significantly. The relevance of nutrition in the etiology of heavy lungworm infections was discussed. The observed decline in the intensity of lungworm infections followed a 30 percent decrease in rainfall from one preceding spring-summer season to the next, thus implicating ecological and/or environmental factors other than nutrition in the etiology of changing lungworm burdens. Prenatal infection of four near term bighorn sheep with first- and third-stage lungworm larvae was demonstrated. This finding suggested a more cosmopolitan occurrence of the phenomenon in bighorn sheep than was previously suspected.

Book excerpt: Strong evidence exists indicating domestic sheep (Ovis aries) can infect Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis), a United States Forest Service (USFS) Region 4 sensitive species, with pneumonia (Callan 1991; Foreyt 1989, 1992, 1994; Foreyt and Lagerquist 1996; George et al 2008; Wehausen et al. 2011). Since the transmission of the pneumonic bacteria between the domestic and wild sheep is a result of bighorn sheep coming into contact with the bacteria carried in the mucous membranes of the domestic sheep, bighorn sheep at risk of initially contracting the bacteria are those individuals that enter areas currently being grazed or that have been recently grazed by domestic sheep (Foreyt 1990; Jessup 1985; Martin et al. 1996; Monello et al. 2001; Rudolph et al. 2003). The issue is further compounded when infected bighorn sheep return to their herd and have the potential to spread the bacteria to other members, which can result in substantial mortality (Shackleton et al. 1999).Throughout the western United States (U.S.), the USFS and various state wildlife agencies are struggling to protect and maintain the viability of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep populations that coexist with domestic sheep being grazed on National Forest lands. This study reviews the biological, social, economic, and legal factors regarding Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep population protection and viability in the presence of domestic sheep, with special attention given to the Evanston/Mt. View Ranger District (EMVRD) on the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest (UWCNF). Additionally, possible solutions to the problem associated with the comingling of bighorn sheep and domestic sheep and the spread of pneumonia to bighorn sheep were investigated on the EMVRD. This included looking at ways to eliminate interactions between the domestic and wild sheep by identifying movement patterns of six satellite collared bighorn sheep of the Hoop Lake herd on the EMVRD.

Book excerpt: This well illustrated book provides an historical and unified overview of a century and a half of research on the development, life cycles, transmission and evolution of the nematodes found in vertebrates throughout the world. This second, expanded edition includes relevant data from some 450 new references that have appeared from 1989 to 1999. The volume includes nematode parasites of humans, domestic animals and wildlife including fish. After an introductory chapter outlining general principles, the author systematically describes the biological characteristics of the 27 superfamilies of nematodes, followed by families, subfamilies, genera and species.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) populations are characterized by drastic all-age respiratory disease related die-offs. Conservation efforts and management are often limited by the vulnerability of bighorn sheep to a multitude of pathogens and concurrent natural and anthropogenic stressors. Furthermore, the effects of human development, infrastructure and activities on local bighorn sheep behaviour, physiology, and population demographics are not fully understood. There is an urgency to determine the mechanisms accountable for bighorn sheep population declines and to understand the dynamics of local populations in order to effectively manage sustainable populations. The South Thompson California bighorn sheep herd located in the southern interior of British Columbia has been rapidly increasing in numbers and is considered a resident herd remaining in the same general area year round. The abundance of sheep and their use of human-developed areas raise concerns regarding the effects of anthropogenic pressures, the capacity of the habitat to sustain the population, and the vulnerability of the herd to a die-off. The specific thesis objectives were: (1) determine whether behaviours are affected by habitat, season, and sex with a focus on developed landscapes; and (2) compare gastrointestinal parasitology and physiological stress levels of ewes in three areas by season and anthropogenic influence to evaluate the impacts of human development. From summer 2008 to fall 2009, behaviour observations were collected from unmarked individuals from the South Thompson herd. During the spring, summer, and fall of 2009, 90 fecal pellet samples were collected opportunistically and noninvasively from unmarked ewes. The frequency of various behavioural categories differed seasonally, among habitat types, and between sexes. The gastrointestinal parasite levels varied by season and location; whereas, stress hormones varied only by location. Based on the behavioural observation results, the urban and agricultural developed lands appear to be an integral part of the South Thompson range. Presently this may be having a positive effect on the herd health by providing high quality forage at key times. However, the population numbers are increasing and this may lead to issues associated with overcrowding. Additionally, land use changes that result in reduced access to these lands may have a major impact on the herd. Parasites were found in all of the bighorn sheep including those in a remote area. Similar results have been reported from other bighorn sheep populations and the presence of gastrointestinal parasites alone does not appear to be a major contributing factor to die-offs. However, if the population continues to expand, or if portions of their range become unavailable, parasite loadings could contribute to health problems. This may be exacerbated if habitat use by bighorn sheep becomes concentrated in the developed areas. Stress hormones were not significantly higher for the bighorn sheep using the developed areas compared to the remote area. However, as numbers increase and more development occurs it will be important to continue to monitor gastrointestinal parasites and stress levels as they may indicate potential problem developing. The results of this study support herd-specific management efforts, help with the development of land use guidelines, aid prioritization of stewardship activities, and identify knowledge gaps for the South Thompson herd.

Its primary focus is on parasites that infect major domestic species, such as dogs, cats, horses, pigs, and ruminants, but it also includes coverage of organisms that infect poultry, laboratory animals, and exotic species. This edition features chapters that cover arthropods, protozoans, and helminths, including their taxonomy and life cycles, as well as the clinical signs, diagnosis, and treatment of each parasite's infection or infestation. Other chapters include vector-borne diseases, antiparasitic drugs, diagnostic parasitology, histopathologic diagnosis, and a new chapter on vaccinations.
