Book excerpt: Scientific realism is the optimistic view that modern science is on the right track: that the world really is the way our best scientific theories describe it . In his book, Stathis Psillos gives us a detailed and comprehensive study which restores the intuitive plausibility of scientific realism. We see that throughout the twentieth century, scientific realism has been challenged by philosophical positions from all angles: from reductive empiricism, to instrumentalism and to modern sceptical empiricism. Scientific Realism explains that the history of science does not undermine the arguments for scientific realism, but instead makes it reasonable to accept scientific realism as the best philosophical account of science, its empirical success, its progress and its practice. Anyone wishing to gain a deeper understanding of the state of modern science and why scientific realism is plausible, should read this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ether and Modernity offers a snapshot of the status of an epistemic object, the "ether" (or "aether"), in the early twentieth century. The contributed papers show that the ether was often regarded as one of the objects of modernity, hand in hand with the electron, radioactivity or X-rays, and not simply as the stubborn residue of an old-fashioned, long-discarded science. The prestige and authority of scientists and popularisers like Oliver Lodge and Arthur Eddington in Britain, Phillip Lenard in Germany or Dayton C. Miller in the USA was instrumental in the preservation, defence or even re-emergence of the ether in the 1920s. Moreover, the consolidation of wireless communications and radio broadcasting, indeed a very modern technology, brought the ether into audiences that would otherwise never have heard about such an esoteric entity. The ether also played a pivotal role among some artists in the early twentieth century: the values of modernism found in the complexities and contradictions of modern physics, such as wireless action or wave-particle puzzles, a fertile ground for the development of new artistic languages; in literature as much as in the pictorial and performing arts. Essays on the intellectual foundations of Umberto Boccioni's art, the linguistic techniques of Lodge, and Ernst Mach's considerations on aesthetics and physics witness to the imbricate relationship between the ether and modernism. Last but not least, the ether played a fundamental part in the resurgence of modern spiritualism in the aftermath of the Great War. This book examines the complex array of meanings, strategies and milieus that enabled the ether to remain an active part in scientific and cultural debates well into the 1930s, but not beyond. This portrait may be easily regarded as the swan song of an epistemic object that was soon to fade away as shown by Paul Dirac's unsuccessful attempt to resuscitate some kind of aether in 1951, with which this book finishes.

Book excerpt: The Harvard Classics Anthology - Complete 51 Volumes, often referred to as 'Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf,' is a monumental assemblage of the quintessential works of world literature, science, and philosophy. Spanning millennia, this collection showcases an impressive diversity of literary styles - from drama to poetry, essays to foundational scientific texts. Its contents reflect not just the Western canon but also touch upon pivotal works from a global perspective, thus offering a comprehensive insight into the human thought and achievement. Highlighted within this collection are seminal pieces that have shaped our understanding of literature, philosophy, and empirical inquiry, underscoring the richness and complexity of human culture and intellect. The contributors to this anthology encompass some of the most influential figures in history, such as Plato, Shakespeare, Darwin, and Goethe, to name but a few. Each author represents a distinct voice within the tapestry of human achievement, contributing unique perspectives that have, in their ways, advanced, critiqued, or illuminated the human condition. The collection is emblematic of various historical, cultural, and literary movements, weaving together the Enlightenment's valorization of reason, the Romantic era's celebration of the individual and emotion, and the methodical, often awe-inspiring insights of the scientific revolution. It is this very confluence of diverse intellectual heritages that enriches the anthology and provides readers with a holistic understanding of human progress. The Harvard Classics Anthology is an indispensable treasure trove for readers seeking to immerse themselves in the wealth of human knowledge and creativity. This collection does not simply curate the foundational texts of the Western canon; it invites readers on an expansive journey through the landscape of human thought and culture. It is an educational odyssey that offers unparalleled depth of insight into the world's literary and philosophical heritage. By engaging with these volumes, readers are afforded a unique opportunity to dialog with the minds that have shaped our world, making it an essential addition to any personal library for both the breadth of learning it encompasses and the dialogue it fosters between the historic and contemporary human experience.

Book excerpt: This is the story of light and the people who were determined to unlock the secrets of one of the greatest puzzles of the Universe. Acclaimed science writer Brian Clegg recounts how civilisations from the Ancient Egyptians to the Mayans understood light spiritually, and looks at the first scientific grapplings with light by the ancient Chinese sage Mo Ti, the Greek philosopher Empedocles, Arab genius Alhazen and others. Clegg also explores the contribution of artists such as Brunellschi, Leonardo de Vinci and Durer to our understanding of light and examines the great revolutionaries of light theory including Galileo, Descartes, Isaac Newton, Michael Faraday and Albert Einstein. In this new edition of one of his best-loved books, Clegg finally discusses the work of scientists such as Maxwell, Edison and Gould that led to light-driven inventions from the camera to the laser, CDs and optical computers and explains the mind-bending advances of quantum physics.
