Book Synopsis Lugard in Hong Kong by : Bernard Mellor
Download or read book Lugard in Hong Kong written by Bernard Mellor and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 1992-08-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Frederick Lugard ranks as one of Britain most distinguished colonial administrators, although he remains a controversial figure. During his five years as Governor of Hong Kong -- a brief spell in the middle of a long and dramatic career in Africa -- Lugard found in educational reform the scope he needed to make a lasting impression and give play to his imperialist theories and instincts. The University of Hong Kong owes its existence to the initiative and tenacity of Lugard. His purpose in founding the University was to produce a new, highly educated middle class trained in Western technology and the English language: a vanguard of increased British influence in the east. This book paints a very human picture of Lugard as a working governor in the relative stability of Hong Kong against a backdrop of the Chinese empire being torn apart by revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria is potentially one of the giants of Africa and indeed the world. Myopia and acrebral waste by functional semi-illiterate military dictators in khaki has ruined Nigeria and continues to ruin the country. The instinct of the military is akin to those of armed robbers, as they operate by force of arms over unarmed and defenceless civilians. Military rule imposed by force of arms against unarmed and defenceless civilians is government of the people, not by the people, and not for the people. Civilian rule is not always democratic rule. Civilian rule imposed upon the people by vote-rigging machines called political parties are as effective as guns as an instrument of oppression of the people and looting of the treasury. Civilian government of the people, not by the people, and not for the people, is exactly the same as military government, as they are the masters of the people. The people did not appoint them, and the people cannot sack them. Nigeria should be governed with the best interests of children at the forefront of all that is done. Their anticipated future needs must be the pillar of every plan. Nigerians are the country’s most important natural resource, and will last far longer than its gas and oil reserves. Treat the people well and the country will respond in kind. Above all, give the poor and their children the “tool” they need to fly Nigeria above the dark clouds that cover it.

Book Synopsis The British Empire [2 volumes] by : Mark Doyle
Download or read book The British Empire [2 volumes] written by Mark Doyle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential starting point for anyone wanting to learn about life in the largest empire in history, this two-volume work encapsulates the imperial experience from the 16th–21st centuries. From early sixteenth-century explorations to the handover of Hong Kong in 1997, the British Empire controlled outposts on every continent, spreading its people and ideas across the globe and profiting mightily in the process. The present state of our world—from its increasing interconnectedness to its vast inequalities and from the successful democracies of North America to the troubled regimes of Africa and the Middle East—can be traced, in large part, to the way in which Great Britain expanded and controlled its empire. The British Empire: A Historical Encyclopedia addresses a broader range of topics than do most other surveys of the empire, covering not only major political and military developments but also topics that have only recently come to serious scholarly attention, such as women's and gender history, art and architecture, indigenous histories and perspectives, and the construction of colonial knowledge and ideologies. By going beyond the "headline" events of the British Empire, this captivating work communicates the British imperial experience in its totality.
Download or read book The Guardians written by Susan Pedersen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-29 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Cundill Prize in Historical Literature Shortlisted for the Lionel Gelber Prize At the end of the First World War, the Paris Peace Conference saw a battle over the future of empire. The victorious allied powers wanted to annex the Ottoman territories and German colonies they had occupied; Woodrow Wilson and a groundswell of anti-imperialist activism stood in their way. France, Belgium, Japan and the British dominions reluctantly agreed to an Anglo-American proposal to hold and administer those allied conquests under "mandate" from the new League of Nations. In the end, fourteen mandated territories were set up across the Middle East, Africa and the Pacific. Against all odds, these disparate and far-flung territories became the site and the vehicle of global transformation. In this masterful history of the mandates system, Susan Pedersen illuminates the role the League of Nations played in creating the modern world. Tracing the system from its creation in 1920 until its demise in 1939, Pedersen examines its workings from the realm of international diplomacy; the viewpoints of the League's experts and officials; and the arena of local struggles within the territories themselves. Featuring a cast of larger-than-life figures, including Lord Lugard, King Faisal, Chaim Weizmann and Ralph Bunche, the narrative sweeps across the globe-from windswept scrublands along the Orange River to famine-blighted hilltops in Rwanda to Damascus under French bombardment-but always returns to Switzerland and the sometimes vicious battles over ideas of civilization, independence, economic relations, and sovereignty in the Geneva headquarters. As Pedersen shows, although the architects and officials of the mandates system always sought to uphold imperial authority, colonial nationalists, German revisionists, African-American intellectuals and others were able to use the platform Geneva offered to challenge their claims. Amid this cacophony, imperial statesmen began exploring new means - client states, economic concessions - of securing Western hegemony. In the end, the mandate system helped to create the world in which we now live. A riveting work of global history, The Guardians enables us to look back at the League with new eyes, and in doing so, appreciate how complex, multivalent, and consequential this first great experiment in internationalism really was.
