Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many ways, the European welfare state constituted a response to the new forms of social fracture and economic turbulence that were born out of industrialization—challenges that were particularly acute for groups whose integration into society seemed the most tenuous. Covering a range of national cases, this volume explores the relationship of weak social ties to poverty and how ideas about this relationship informed welfare policies in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By focusing on three representative populations—neglected children, the homeless, and the unemployed—it provides a rich, comparative consideration of the shifting perceptions, representations, and lived experiences of social vulnerability in modern Europe.

The bulleted formatting and topical range make this a highly accessible work, while providing an incredible wealth of information in a single volume.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book of the Year "Full of insights, marvelously entertaining . . . haunting and beautifully written." --The New York Review of Books "I lived in Athens, at the intersection of a prostitute and a saint." So begins Patricia Storace's astonishing memoir of her year in Greece. Mixing affection with detachment, rapture with clarity, this American poet perfectly evokes a country delicately balanced between East and West. Whether she is interpreting Hellenic dream books, pop songs, and soap operas, describing breathtakingly beautiful beaches and archaic villages, or braving the crush at a saint's tomb, Storace, winner of the Whiting Award, rewards the reader with informed and sensual insights into Greece's soul. She sees how the country's pride in its past coexists with profound doubts about its place in the modern world. She discovers a world in which past and present engage in a passionate dialogue. Stylish, funny, and erudite, Dinner with Persephone is travel writing elevated to a fine art--and the best book of its kind since Henry Miller's The Colossus of Maroussi. "Splendid. Storace's account of a year in Greece combines past and present, legend and fact, in an unusual and delightful whole. " --Atlantic Monthly

And children learn of Jesus who died, was put inside a tomb that opened for us, his life revived. The Monarch butterflies now face extinction’s fate because the corporate lies make greed inflate. Profits mean more than lives of people, plants,; those words and deeds doom fish, beehives. flowers, birds. They make poisons to sell to kill unwanted weeds and insects but don’t tell all those it feeds. They poison water, earth, destroy, drill and spill oil, plastic, waste for wealth, take health and kill. All like Monsanto liars in power who truth resist, all climate change deniers, hear scientists. Ask the butterflies as now they fly away before the last one dies and hear them say: “We are passing away, you are passing away, all are passing away, to Judgment Day.”

Among them is Ben, taking the place of his free-spirited girlfriend, Summer, who has recently lost her battle with cancer. Haunted by guilt, the Shine Walk is one last thing he must do for her. But what starts out as a wretched evening for Ben develops into a journey of redemption after he meets the seemingly unremarkable Annie. When Ben first met Summer, she inspired him to start his scrapbook of tales from London’s past. Now, as he walks, Ben recounts extracts from his scrapbook and, encouraged by Annie, slowly finds the courage to tell the story of his relationship with Summer – a relationship inextricably linked to locations they pass, including Battersea Park and its little, brown dog statue, and the Natural History Museum, home of the cursed Deadly Purple Sapphire. But it is only when they reach Tower Bridge that Ben finally reveals Summer’s deepest secrets – secrets that drove Ben and Summer apart. A Scrapbook for Summer is a beautifully told tale of love and loss interwoven with wonderful stories from London’s rich history – a truly original book that will capture both your head and your heart in equal measure. Inspired by novels such as One Day by David Nichols and The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, A Scrapbook for Summer will appeal to fans of romance and historical fiction alike.

Book excerpt: Beliefs, superstitions and tales about luck are present across all human cultures, according to anthropologists. We are perennially fascinated by luck and by its association with happiness and danger, uncertainty and aspiration. Yet it remains an elusive, ungraspable idea, one that slips and slides over time: all cultures reimagine what luck is and how to tame it at different stages in their history, and the modernity of the ‘long twentieth century’ is no exception to the rule. Apparently overshadowed by more conceptually tight, scientific and characteristically modern notions such as chance, contingency, probability or randomness, luck nevertheless persists in all its messiness and vitality, used in our everyday language and the subject of studies by everyone from philosophers to psychologists, economists to self-help gurus. Modern Luck sets out to explore the enigma of luck’s presence in modernity, examining the hybrid forms it has taken on in the modern imagination, and in particular in the field of modern stories. Indeed, it argues that modern luck is constituted through narrative, through modern luck stories. Analysing a rich and unusually eclectic range of narrative taken from literature, film, music, television and theatre – from Dostoevsky to Philip K. Dick, from Pinocchio to Cimino, from Curtiz to Kieślowski – it lays out first the usages and meanings of the language of luck, and then the key figures, patterns and motifs that govern the stories told about it, from the late nineteenth century to the present day.
