Book excerpt: What happened between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2? In her book, Lucifer's Flood, Linda Rios Brook explores what she believes may be the missing piece--Yahweh's purging heaven of its rebellious inhabitants: The sensation of falling was terrifying... We tumbled out of the realm of the heavenly light into perpetual darkness. We had not seen darkness before. Not like this anyway... From the perspective of a fallen angel, Brook creates a world where angels and demons battle for dominion over the newly created earth. Reminiscent of C.S. Lewis's classic, The Screwtape Letters, Lucifer's Flood's unique style will be relished by a wide range of readers who enjoy fantasy, biblical stories, and mysteries alike. Readers have heard about Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the flood, but they have probably never considered the origins of the Nephilim of Genesis 6, the story behind the incident with Noah and his sons, or why the birth of Moses made the demons so angry. Part intriguing theological exploration, part swashbuckling supernatural thriller, Lucifer's Flood is a narrative journey from Creation to the birth of Moses. Readers will be intrigued as Brook weaves a tale of what could have occurred behind the scenes of familiar biblical stories, taking them from the glittering reaches of heaven to the murky depths of Lucifer's lair.

That was until my very worst nightmare took place. My relationship with Lucifer's Lair MC could cost me my son and that is one person I could never live without. I guess it's true, when things go too good, there's always something bad waiting to happen. Aidan's father, David, has been making his rounds and has done his homework in finding out the truth. If I don't stop seeing Mack Truck and Flip, David is going to open an investigation on the whole club regarding the deaths of The Plague's president, Fang, and many other unsolved deaths. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Skin of the System objects to the idea that there is only one modernity—that of liberal capitalism. Starting from the simple conviction that whatever else East German socialism was, it was real, this book focuses on what made historical socialism different from social systems in the West. In this way, the study elicits the general question: what must we think in order to think an other system at all? To approach this question, Robinson turns to the remarkable writer Franz Fühmann, the East German who most single-mindedly dedicated himself to understanding what it means to transform from fascism to socialism. Fühmann's own serial loyalties to Hitler and Stalin inform his existential meditations on change and difference. By placing Fühmann's politically alert and intensely personal literary inventions in the context of an inquiry into radical social rupture, The Skin of the System wrests the brutal materiality of twentieth-century socialism from attempts to provincialize both its desires and its failures as antimodern ideological follies.

Book excerpt: "Polhemus sketches several distinctions between nineteenth- and twentieth-century novelists and concludes that what most characterizes the nineteenth century, from the perspective of the twentieth, is the tendency in its comic fiction to criticize and to undermine the dogma and institutions of religion and to put faith instead of the existence of the comic perspective. Comic Faith is a virtuoso performance of impressive stature; I suspect the book will be influential for many years to come."—John Halperin, Modern Fiction Studies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: June 16, 2004, was the one hundredth anniversary of Bloomsday, the day that James Joyce's novel Ulysses takes place. To celebrate the occasion, thousands took to the streets in Dublin, following in the footsteps of protagonist Leopold Bloom. The event also was marked by the Bloomsday 100 Symposium, where world-renowned scholars discussed Joyce's seminal work. This volume contains the best, most provocative readings of Ulysses presented at the conference. The contributors to this volume urge a close engagement with the novel. They offer readings that focus variously on the materialist, historical, and political dimensions of Ulysses. The diversity of topics covered include nineteenth-century psychology, military history, Catholic theology, the influence of early film and music hall songs on Joyce, the post-Ulysses evolution of the one-day novel, and the challenge of discussing such a complex work amongst the sea of extant criticism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by Richard Grusin of the Center for 21st Century Studies, this is the first book to name and characterize—and therefore consolidate—a wide array of current critical, theoretical, and philosophical approaches to the humanities and social sciences under the concept of the nonhuman turn. Each of these approaches is engaged in decentering the human in favor of a concern for the nonhuman, understood by contributors in a variety of ways—in terms of animals, affectivity, bodies, materiality, technologies, and organic and geophysical systems. The nonhuman turn in twenty-first-century studies can be traced to multiple intellectual and theoretical developments from the last decades of the twentieth century: actor-network theory, affect theory, animal studies, assemblage theory, cognitive sciences, new materialism, new media theory, speculative realism, and systems theory. Such varied analytical and theoretical formations obviously diverge and disagree in many of their assumptions, objects, and methodologies. However, they all take up aspects of the nonhuman as critical to the future of twenty-first-century studies in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Unlike the posthuman turn, the nonhuman turn does not make a claim about teleology or progress in which we begin with the human and see a transformation from the human to the posthuman. Rather, the nonhuman turn insists (paraphrasing Bruno Latour) that “we have never been human,” that the human has always coevolved, coexisted, or collaborated with the nonhuman—and that the human is identified precisely by this indistinction from the nonhuman.
