The box was filled with Vietnam memorabilia-the remnants of her father's tour of duty in 1967 as a Battalion Surgeon in An Hoa. Lucia became obsessed with a need to reconnect with the memories of her father and spent four years traveling across America, gathering stories from the Marines of the Second Battalion Fifth Marine Regiment, First Marine Division who served alongside her father. This quest to learn about a Dr. Tom she never knew turned into a unique journey of discovery through the eyes of a very special brotherhood of young men. A journey that weaves the Marine esprit de corps with the horrors and humor of war with a first-hand, no-holds-barred perspective on combat life in Vietnam in 1967.

Book excerpt: Across the Channel, the battle rages ... On the Tilling front, another battle is being fought-the constant war of wits and social ascendancy between Lucia Pillson and Elizabeth Mapp-Flint. Lucia, with her superior style, timeless elegance, occasional low cunning and husband Georgie-whose talent for transforming powdered eggs and canned meat into gourmet fare has turned him into a minor celebrity-invariably wins the day. Although Elizabeth may have lost a battle or two, she definitely hasn't lost the war-until she carelessly gives Lucia the ultimate weapon against her, upsetting the balance of power in Lucia's favor. But how long will Lucia be able to retain the admiration of all Tilling if her power remains unchecked? After all, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Originally published in 1985, Lucia in Wartime is the first of Tom Holt's officially sanctioned sequels to the hilarious "Lucia" novels of E.F. Benson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Make Way For Lucia, also known as Mapp and Lucia, is a collective name for a series of novels by E. F. Benson about Emmeline "Lucia" Lucas and Elizabeth Mapp. The novels feature humorous incidents in the lives of (mainly) upper-middle-class British people in the 1920s and 1930s, vying for social prestige and one-upmanship in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery. Several of them are set in the small seaside town of Tilling, closely based on Rye, East Sussex, where Benson lived for a number of years and served as mayor. Edward Frederic Benson (1867-1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer, known professionally as E.F. Benson. He started his novel writing career in 1893 with the fashionably controversial Dodo, which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama. He repeated the success of Dodo, with sequels to this novel, but the greatest success came relatively late in his career with The Mapp and Lucia series consisting of six novels and two short stories. Benson was also known as a writer of atmospheric, oblique, and at times humorous or satirical ghost stories. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucia has a disturbed childhood. Unloved, she lives a life devoid of care and affection and is unable to express herself or communicate in any way with her family. But one day everything changes when Lucia finds an outlet and a way to communicate real emotion through her poltergeist, “Ginger”. Set in North London in 1989, sixteen year old Lucia comes home from school one day to discover a patch of water on her exercise paper. Noticing the reaction it gets from her mother, Lucia starts a game pouring water on carpets and beds. When psychics confirm there is malignant energy in the flat, her behaviour escalates. Before long, she is throwing heavy furniture around the flat and writing all over the walls. Before she knows it, she is appearing on national TV to convince the public of the poltergeist... Lucia does not understand why she is doing these things, but once she starts, she cannot stop. Why can’t she stop and what makes her do these things? Does she ever get found out. And more important, does Lucia fake the poltergeist or is Ginger real and part of her? Written from both a first person and third person perspective and with dual time narratives, Lucia’s Poltergeist is an unusual psychological suspense novel that explores themes of the supernatural, the psychological impact of abuse, and the issue of polarity and duality, the Jekyll and Hyde, within us all.
