Book excerpt: Luang Prabang - The Monks is a beautiful real-life photo-tapestry that depicts the two distinct spiritual and secular lives of the Buddhist monks in Luang Prabang. It is the distilled product of three years of diligent detailed research and carefully cultivated relationships with local experts, and three month-long photo-expeditions to Luang Prabang. My research and relationships, combined with patience and perseverance, enabled me to uniquely photograph both the readily seen and rarely seen daily lives of the monks there. Luang Prabang is centred on a peninsula at the confluence of the famous Nam Kong (Mekong) River and its tributary, the Nam Khan River. It was a former royal capital and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. It is also the historical centre and spiritual heart of Laotian Buddhism. Indeed, the Heritage Site alone is home to over twenty active temples. Luang Prabang - The Monks goes beyond and behind the visual feast of the stunning temples there. It depicts the strength and synergy of the spiritual and secular lives of the monks who live, work, study, and pray in these temples. Their spiritual life, enshrined in their serene religious ceremonies and silent alms taking, is readily seen. However, their secular life, centred around their strenuous chores, demanding school studies, and well-earned recreation, is rarely seen. Immerse all your five senses in both the readily seen and rarely seen daily lives of the monks. See their self-discipline at worship and their self-reliance at work. Hear their rhythmic chants at prayer and raucous laughter at play. Smell the fragrant candles inside the temples and the acrid open-air kitchen fires outside. Taste the fresh coconuts they harvest and the spicy meals they prepare. Above all, feel their humility when the monks receive alms from their lay communities, and their humanity when they reciprocate with spiritual guidance.

Book excerpt: When 14- and 12-year-old sisters embark on a global family adventure, they learn that surviving new cultures and customs is even scarier than surviving middle school. This TRUE, dual POV, coming-of-age journey features maps and images of people and places across the globe. "THANKS FOR RUINING MY LIFE!" Delaney's eighth-grade dreams crumble when her parents announce their "global family field trip." While her younger sister, Riley, is thrilled to ditch middle school for world school, Delaney cringes at trading parties and friends for a passport and 24/7 family time. While Riley researches bungee jumping and packing tips, Delaney must decide whether to continue the silent treatment or embrace this adventure. What about school? Forget acing science and math, the only way to pass this class is to survive: scam artists, monster cockroaches, deadly stingers, projectile vomiting, public nudity, and toilet catastrophes. And those lessons aren't in their textbooks. Each passport stamp is a real-life social studies lesson in new religions and new rules--resulting in so many awkward family moments. But when an itinerary mistake puts the family's freedom at risk, they learn the most valuable lesson of their lives. Trapped together in their parents' mid-life crisis, will the sisters survive this global adventure? And will non-stop family time turn them into friends? Or enemies?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirits of the Place is a rare and timely contribution to our understanding of religious culture in Laos and Southeast Asia. Most often studied as a part of Thai, Vietnamese, or Khmer history, Laos remains a terra incognita to most Westerners—and to many of the people living throughout Asia as well. John Holt’s new book brings this fascinating nation into focus. With its overview of Lao Buddhism and analysis of how shifting political power—from royalty to democracy to communism—has impacted Lao religious culture, the book offers an integrated account of the entwined political and religious history of Laos from the fourteenth century to the contemporary era. Holt advances the provocative argument that common Lao knowledge of important aspects of Theravada Buddhist thought and practice has been heavily conditioned by an indigenous religious culture dominated by the veneration of phi, spirits whose powers are thought to prevail over and within specific social and geographical domains. The enduring influence of traditional spirit cults in Lao culture and society has brought about major changes in how the figure of the Buddha and the powers associated with Buddhist temples and reliquaries—indeed how all ritual spaces and times—have been understood by the Lao. Despite vigorous attempts by Buddhist royalty, French rationalists, and most recently by communist ideologues to eliminate the worship of phi, spirit cults have not been displaced; they continue to persist and show no signs of abating. Not only have the spirits resisted eradication, but they have withstood synthesis, subordination, and transformation by Buddhist political and ecclesiastical powers. Rather than reduce Buddhist religious culture to a set of simple commonalities, Holt takes a comparative approach, using his nearly thirty years’ experience with Sri Lanka to elucidate what is unique about Lao Buddhism. This stimulating book invites students in the fields of the history of religion and Buddhist and Southeast Asian studies to take a fresh look at prevailing assumptions and perhaps reconsider the place of Buddhism in Laos and Southeast Asia.
