Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inference control in statistical databases, also known as statistical disclosure limitation or statistical confidentiality, is about finding tradeoffs to the tension between the increasing societal need for accurate statistical data and the legal and ethical obligation to protect privacy of individuals and enterprises which are the source of data for producing statistics. Techniques used by intruders to make inferences compromising privacy increasingly draw on data mining, record linkage, knowledge discovery, and data analysis and thus statistical inference control becomes an integral part of computer science. This coherent state-of-the-art survey presents some of the most recent work in the field. The papers presented together with an introduction are organized in topical sections on tabular data protection, microdata protection, and software and user case studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume "Fuzziness in Database Management Systems" is a highly informative, well-organized and up-to-date collection of contributions authored by many of the leading experts in its field. Among the contributors are the editors, Professors Patrick Bose and Janusz Kacprzyk, both of whom are known internationally. The book is like a movie with an all-star cast. The issue of fuzziness in database management systems has a long history. It begins in 1968 and 1971, when I spent my sabbatical leaves at the IBM Research Laboratory in San Jose, California, as a visiting scholar. During these periods I was associated with Dr. E.F. Codd, the father of relational models of database systems, and came in contact with the developers ofiBMs System Rand SQL. These associations and contacts at a time when the methodology of relational models of data was in its formative stages, made me aware of the basic importance of such models and the desirability of extending them to fuzzy database systems and fuzzy query languages. This perception was reflected in my 1973 ffiM report which led to the paper on the concept of a linguistic variable and later to the paper on the meaning representation language PRUF (Possibilistic Relational Universal Fuzzy). More directly related to database issues during that period were the theses of my students V. Tahani, J. Yang, A. Bolour, M. Shen and R. Sheng, and many subsequent reports by both graduate and undergraduate students at Berkeley.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasion of privacy and misuse of personal data are among the most obvious negative effects of today's information and communication technologies. Besides technical issues from a variety of fields, privacy legislation, depending on national activities and often lacking behind technical progress, plays an important role in designing, implementing, and using privacy-enhancing systems. Taking into account technical aspects from IT security, this book presents in detail a formal task-based privacy model which can be used to technically enforce legal privacy requirements. Furthermore, the author specifies how the privacy model policy has been implemented together with other security policies in accordance with the Generalized Framework for Access Control (GFAC). This book will appeal equally to R&D professionals and practitioners active in IT security and privacy, advanced students, and IT managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privacy in statistical databases is a discipline whose purpose is to provide solutions to the tension between the increasing social, political and economical demand of accurate information, and the legal and ethical obligation to protect the privacy of the various parties involved. Those parties are the respondents (the individuals and enterprises to which the database records refer), the data owners (those organizations spending money in data collection) and the users (the ones querying the database, who would like their queries to stay con?d- tial). Beyond law and ethics, there are also practical reasons for data collecting agencies to invest in respondent privacy: if individual respondents feel their p- vacyguaranteed, they arelikelyto providemoreaccurateresponses. Data owner privacy is primarily motivated by practical considerations: if an enterprise c- lects data at its own expense, it may wish to minimize leakage of those data to other enterprises (even to those with whom joint data exploitation is planned). Finally, user privacy results in increased user satisfaction, even if it may curtail the ability of the database owner to pro?le users. Thereareatleasttwotraditionsinstatisticaldatabaseprivacy, bothofwhich started in the 1970s: one stems from o?cial statistics, where the discipline is also known as statistical disclosure control (SDC), and the other originatesfrom computer science and database technology. In o?cial statistics, the basic c- cern is respondent privacy.

Book excerpt: With an ever-increasing amount of information on the web, it is critical to understand the pedigree, quality, and accuracy of your data. Using provenance, you can ascertain the quality of data based on its ancestral data and derivations, track back to sources of errors, allow automatic re-enactment of derivations to update data, and provide attribution of the data source. Secure Data Provenance and Inference Control with Semantic Web supplies step-by-step instructions on how to secure the provenance of your data to make sure it is safe from inference attacks. It details the design and implementation of a policy engine for provenance of data and presents case studies that illustrate solutions in a typical distributed health care system for hospitals. Although the case studies describe solutions in the health care domain, you can easily apply the methods presented in the book to a range of other domains. The book describes the design and implementation of a policy engine for provenance and demonstrates the use of Semantic Web technologies and cloud computing technologies to enhance the scalability of solutions. It covers Semantic Web technologies for the representation and reasoning of the provenance of the data and provides a unifying framework for securing provenance that can help to address the various criteria of your information systems. Illustrating key concepts and practical techniques, the book considers cloud computing technologies that can enhance the scalability of solutions. After reading this book you will be better prepared to keep up with the on-going development of the prototypes, products, tools, and standards for secure data management, secure Semantic Web, secure web services, and secure cloud computing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Just some years before, there have been no throngs of Machine Learning, scientists developing intelligent merchandise and services at major corporations and startups. Once the youngest folks (the authors) entered the sector, machine learning didn’t command headlines in daily newspapers. Our oldsters had no plan what machine learning was, including why we would like it to a career in medication or law. Machine learning was an advanced tutorial discipline with a slender set of real-world applications. And people applications, e.g. speech recognition and pc vision, needed most domain data that they were usually thought to be separate areas entirely that machine learning was one tiny part. Neural networks, the antecedents of the deep learning models that we tend to specialize in during this book, were thought to be out-of-date tools. In simply the previous five years, deep learning has taken the world by surprise, using fast progress in fields as diverse as laptop vision, herbal language processing, computerized speech recognition, reinforcement learning, and statistical modelling. With these advances in hand, we can now construct cars that power themselves (with increasing autonomy), clever reply structures that anticipate mundane replies, assisting humans to dig out from mountains of email, and software program retailers that dominate the world’s first-class people at board video games like Go, a feat once deemed to be a long time away. Already, these equipment are exerting a widening impact, changing the way films are made, diseases are…diagnosed, and enjoying a developing role in simple sciences – from astrophysics to biology. This e-book represents our attempt to make deep learning approachable, instructing you each the concepts, the context, and the code."
