For example, the relatively recent emergence and routine use of extremely power- ful digital computer hardware and software has had a major impact on design capabilities and procedures. Sophisticated new airflow measurement and visualization systems permit the analyst to conduct micro- and macro-studies of properties within flow fields on and off the surfaces of models in advanced wind tunnels. Trade studies of the most efficient geometrical shapes for aircraft can be conducted with blazing speed within a broad scope of integrated technical disciplines, and the use of sophisticated piloted simulators in the vehicle development process permits the most important segment of operations—the human pilot—to make early assessments of the acceptability of the vehicle for its intended mission. Knowledgeable applica- tions of these tools of the trade dramatically reduce risk and redesign, and increase the marketability and safety of new aerospace vehicles.

Book excerpt: The low speed aerodynamic characteristics of a large-scale model intended to represent advanced fixed-wing fighters have been investigated in the Ames 40 by 80 foot wind tunnel. The model possessed positive static longitudinal stability to nearly 28 deg angle of attack, the maximum tested, both with and without leading-edge flaps deflected. Lateral control with differentially deflected ailerons and a right wing spoiler simultaneously deployed as combined controls was only slightly greater than that with the differentially deflected ailerons deployed as a separate control without the spoiler. Measured lift and drag were in close agreement with that predicted by theory to about 14 deg angle of attack, including the prediction of lift due to 30 deg of trailing edge flap deflection. Estimated takeoff performance of an aircraft 4/3 the scale of the test model showed takeoff distances of less than 2000 ft.

Book excerpt: A low speed wind tunnel investigation was conducted to examine the aerodynamic characteristics of the flowfield around a three percent scale YF-17 lightweight fighter prototype model at high angles of attack using flow visualization and force and moment measurements. Smoke filaments, injected into the wind tunnel test section, were illuminated by a laser sheet to highlight flow phenomena about the model. Force and moment measurements were made using a precision six-component strain gage balance. The investigation marked the first attempt at qualitative flow analysis using the laser sheet flow visualization system recently installed in the Naval Postgraduate School low speed wind tunnel facility. The investigation was undertaken to specifically identify flow phenomena and/or regions of interest that may have bearing on the design and performance of supermaneuverable aircraft. The data indicate a good correlation between the observed flow phenomena and force and moment measurements at various angles of attack, thus establishing the credibility of such experimental investigations for high angle of attack aerodynamic research.
