Book Synopsis Holomorphic Curves in Low Dimensions by : Chris Wendl
Download or read book Holomorphic Curves in Low Dimensions written by Chris Wendl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides an accessible introduction to the applications of pseudoholomorphic curves in symplectic and contact geometry, with emphasis on dimensions four and three. The first half of the book focuses on McDuff's characterization of symplectic rational and ruled surfaces, one of the classic early applications of holomorphic curve theory. The proof presented here uses the language of Lefschetz fibrations and pencils, thus it includes some background on these topics, in addition to a survey of the required analytical results on holomorphic curves. Emphasizing applications rather than technical results, the analytical survey mostly refers to other sources for proofs, while aiming to provide precise statements that are widely applicable, plus some informal discussion of the analytical ideas behind them. The second half of the book then extends this program in two complementary directions: (1) a gentle introduction to Gromov-Witten theory and complete proof of the classification of uniruled symplectic 4-manifolds; and (2) a survey of punctured holomorphic curves and their applications to questions from 3-dimensional contact topology, such as classifying the symplectic fillings of planar contact manifolds. This book will be particularly useful to graduate students and researchers who have basic literacy in symplectic geometry and algebraic topology, and would like to learn how to apply standard techniques from holomorphic curve theory without dwelling more than necessary on the analytical details. This book is also part of the Virtual Series on Symplectic Geometry http://www.springer.com/series/16019
Book Synopsis Differential-algebraic Equations by : Peter Kunkel
Download or read book Differential-algebraic Equations written by Peter Kunkel and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2006 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential-algebraic equations are a widely accepted tool for the modeling and simulation of constrained dynamical systems in numerous applications, such as mechanical multibody systems, electrical circuit simulation, chemical engineering, control theory, fluid dynamics and many others. This is the first comprehensive textbook that provides a systematic and detailed analysis of initial and boundary value problems for differential-algebraic equations. The analysis is developed from the theory of linear constant coefficient systems via linear variable coefficient systems to general nonlinear systems. Further sections on control problems, generalized inverses of differential-algebraic operators, generalized solutions, and differential equations on manifolds complement the theoretical treatment of initial value problems. Two major classes of numerical methods for differential-algebraic equations (Runge-Kutta and BDF methods) are discussed and analyzed with respect to convergence and order. A chapter is devoted to index reduction methods that allow the numerical treatment of general differential-algebraic equations. The analysis and numerical solution of boundary value problems for differential-algebraic equations is presented, including multiple shooting and collocation methods. A survey of current software packages for differential-algebraic equations completes the text. The book is addressed to graduate students and researchers in mathematics, engineering and sciences, as well as practitioners in industry. A prerequisite is a standard course on the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations. Numerous examples and exercises make the book suitable as a course textbook or for self-study.
Download or read book Matrix Polynomials written by I. Gohberg and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2009-07-23 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the definitive treatment of the theory of polynomials in a complex variable with matrix coefficients. Basic matrix theory can be viewed as the study of the special case of polynomials of first degree; the theory developed in Matrix Polynomials is a natural extension of this case to polynomials of higher degree. It has applications in many areas, such as differential equations, systems theory, the Wiener-Hopf technique, mechanics and vibrations, and numerical analysis. Although there have been significant advances in some quarters, this work remains the only systematic development of the theory of matrix polynomials. The book is appropriate for students, instructors, and researchers in linear algebra, operator theory, differential equations, systems theory, and numerical analysis. Its contents are accessible to readers who have had undergraduate-level courses in linear algebra and complex analysis.
Book Synopsis Algorithms for Quadratic Matrix and Vector Equations by : Federico Poloni
Download or read book Algorithms for Quadratic Matrix and Vector Equations written by Federico Poloni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-13 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to studying algorithms for the solution of a class of quadratic matrix and vector equations. These equations appear, in different forms, in several practical applications, especially in applied probability and control theory. The equations are first presented using a novel unifying approach; then, specific numerical methods are presented for the cases most relevant for applications, and new algorithms and theoretical results developed by the author are presented. The book focuses on “matrix multiplication-rich” iterations such as cyclic reduction and the structured doubling algorithm (SDA) and contains a variety of new research results which, as of today, are only available in articles or preprints.
Book Synopsis Spectra and Pseudospectra by : Lloyd N. Trefethen
Download or read book Spectra and Pseudospectra written by Lloyd N. Trefethen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2005-08-07 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pure and applied mathematicians, physicists, scientists, and engineers use matrices and operators and their eigenvalues in quantum mechanics, fluid mechanics, structural analysis, acoustics, ecology, numerical analysis, and many other areas. However, in some applications the usual analysis based on eigenvalues fails. For example, eigenvalues are often ineffective for analyzing dynamical systems such as fluid flow, Markov chains, ecological models, and matrix iterations. That's where this book comes in. This is the authoritative work on nonnormal matrices and operators, written by the authorities who made them famous. Each of the sixty sections is written as a self-contained essay. Each document is a lavishly illustrated introductory survey of its topic, complete with beautiful numerical experiments and all the right references. The breadth of included topics and the numerous applications that provide links between fields will make this an essential reference in mathematics and related sciences.

Book Synopsis Damped Oscillations of Linear Systems by : Krešimir Veselić
Download or read book Damped Oscillations of Linear Systems written by Krešimir Veselić and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-09 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of linear damped oscillations was originally developed more than hundred years ago and is still of vital research interest to engineers, mathematicians and physicists alike. This theory plays a central role in explaining the stability of mechanical structures in civil engineering, but it also has applications in other fields such as electrical network systems and quantum mechanics. This volume gives an introduction to linear finite dimensional damped systems as they are viewed by an applied mathematician. After a short overview of the physical principles leading to the linear system model, a largely self-contained mathematical theory for this model is presented. This includes the geometry of the underlying indefinite metric space, spectral theory of J-symmetric matrices and the associated quadratic eigenvalue problem. Particular attention is paid to the sensitivity issues which influence numerical computations. Finally, several recent research developments are included, e.g. Lyapunov stability and the perturbation of the time evolution.
