Book excerpt: Research is presented on the development of an ultralow-noise traveling-wave tube operating in the 5.4- to 5.9-gigacycle band. Data are presented on 29 tubes built and tested during the course of the program. Most of these tubes were test vehicles used to evaluate a number of lownoise gun geometries. Final tubes were constructed with a two-section helix which permitted independent 360-degree phase shift control without any measurable deterioration in noise figure. Of the basic gun geometries tested, the magnetron injection gun exhibited the most promising noise figure data. Using this gun, a room-temperature noise figure of 4.1 db was achieved at 1650 gauss focusing field, which decreased to 3.8 db at a field fo 3500 gauss. With the tube immersed in liquid nitrogen the noise figure dropped to 3.4 db at 1650 gauss, and to 3.1 db at 3500 gauss. The 0.7-db improvement in noise figure that was observed at liquid nitrogen temperatures is in accord with theory. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A low noise traveling wave tube amplifier packaged with integral solid state power supply and permanent magnet focusing was developed to cover the frequency band 18 to 40 GHz. The amplifier noise figure lies between 13 and 14 dB; the minimum small signal gain is 32 dB, and the gain variation is plus or minus 2.7 dB. The minimum saturated power output is + 6 dbm. The tube employs a hollow beam six anode low noise electron gun. A unique ridge waveguide coupler was developed to cover the double waveguide band. A key factor in reducing gain variation was development of an improved 'skrunching' method for the fluted glass helix support structure. The tube completes a series of four low noise traveling wave tube amplifiers covering the 0.5 to 40 GHz frequency band. (Author).

This book was released on 1967 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the final report for a program in which two very low-noise traveling-wave amplifiers covering the frequency range from 2.0 to 8.0 GHz have been developed. The amplifiers are focused by permanent magnet and are packaged with an integral power supply. Hence, by simply plugging the device into 115 volt, 60 Hz source one obtains a small signal amplification of 28 plus or minus 3dB with a noise figure less than 6 dB and a minimum saturated power output of 6.7 dBm or more over the entire double octave frequency range. The principal design techniques used in attaining this new ultra broadband amplifier include: a hollow beam low-noise gun having broadband characteristics; a straight field permanent magnet focusing arrangement; a severed helix where the input half is designed to minimize noise figure and the output half is designed to maximize power output while the combination is designed to minimize gain variation. The development of this ultra-broadband low-noise amplifier leads the way for development of similar amplifiers covering 0.5 to 2 GHz and 8 to 18 GHz. When these have been developed it will be possible to design wideband receivers and spectrum analyzers which are about half as complicated as present designs in the RF section. (Author).

Book excerpt: A final report is made for a program in which a low-noise traveling-wave amplifier covering the frequency range from 0.5 to 2.1 GHz was developed. The amplifier is focused by a permanent magnet and packaged with an integral power supply. Hence, by simply plugging the device into 115 volt, 60 Hz source one obtains a small signal amplification of 31 plus or minus 1.5 dB with a noise figure less than 6.5 dB and a minimum saturated power output of 4.8 dBm or more over the entire double octave frequency range. The principal design techniques used in attaining this new ultra broadband amplifier include: (a) A hollow beam low-noise gun having broadband characteristics; (b) A straight field permanent magnet focusing arrangement; and (c) A severed helix where the input half is designed to minimize noise figure and the output half is designed to maximize power output while the combination is designed to minimize gain variation.
