Two notable applications are high energy electron-positron linear colliders for particle physics, and fourth-generation light sources consisting of linac-driven Free-Electron Lasers (FEL), both of which represent significant programmatic potential for the Laboratory in the future. The technologies contributing to low-emittance electron beams and their applications, namely precision fabrication, ultra-short pulse lasers, and RF photocathode injectors, are all areas of Lab expertise, and the work carried out under this LDRD project further expanded our core-competency in advanced concept accelerators. Furthermore, high energy accelerators have become a cornerstone of the SBSS program, as illustrated by the recent development of proton radiography as a prime technology candidate for the Advanced Hydrotest Facility (AHF), which enhanced the significance of this project all the more. This was a one-year project to both advance the technology of, and participate in the science enabled by very low-emittance electron beams. The work centered around the two themes above, namely electron-positron linear colliders, and the new fourth-generation light sources. This work built upon previous LDRD investments, and was intended to emphasize accelerator physics experiments.

Book excerpt: Many future linear collider designs call for electron and positron beams with normalized rms horizontal and vertical emittances of????????? = 3×10−6 m-rad and??{sub y} = 3×10−8 m-rad; these are a factor of 10 to 100 below those observed in the Stanford Linear Collider. In this dissertation, we examine the feasibility of achieving beams with these very small vertical emittances. We examine the limitations encountered during both the generation and the subsequent acceleration of such low emittance beams. We consider collective limitations, such as wakefields, space charge effects, scattering processes, and ion trapping; and also how intensity limitations, such as anomalous dispersion, betatron coupling, and pulse-to-pulse beam jitter. In general, the minimum emittance in both the generation and the acceleration stages is limited by the transverse misalignments of the accelerator components. We describe a few techniques of correcting the effect of these errors, thereby easing the alignment tolerances by over an order of magnitude. Finally, we also calculate fundamental'' limitations on the minimum vertical emittance; these do not constrain the current designs but may prove important in the future.

Book excerpt: Recent experiments at the LLNL Petawatt Laser have demonstrated the generation of intense, high energy beams of electrons and ions from the interaction of ultra-intense laser light with solid targets. Focused laser intensities as high as 6 x 102° W/cm2 are achieved, at which point the quiver energies of the target electrons extend to (almost equal to)10 MeV. In this new, fully relativistic regime of laser-plasma interactions, nuclear processes become important and nuclear techniques are required to diagnose the high-energy particle production. In recent experiments we have observed electrons accelerated to 100 MeV, up to 60 MeV brehmsstrahlung generation, photo-nuclear fission and positron-electron pair creation. We also have observed monoenergetic jets of electrons having sufficiently small emittance to be interesting as a laser-accelerated beam, if the production mechanism could be understood and controlled. The huge flux of multi-MeV ponderomotively accelerated electrons produced in the laser-solid interaction is also observed to accelerate contaminant ions from the rear surface of the solid target up to 50 MeV. We describe spectroscopic measurements which reveal intense monoenergetic beam features in the proton energy spectrum. The total spectrum contains>1013 protons, while the monoenergetic beam pulses contain (almost equal to)1 nC of protons, and exhibits a longitudinal and transverse emittance smaller than conventional RF proton accelerator beams.

Book excerpt: In order to produce the desired luminosity it is required to generate a large number of positrons, namely N+ = 2 ̦ 5 x 101° positrons per bunch at a repetition rate of 3 + 12 KHz. These specifications are very demanding and well above the present state of the art. e/e− conversion in a high Z target is performed with an overall efficiency, [eta], of at most 7%/GeV, including e capture and acceleration efficiencies. The value refers to a situation where all positrons in an energy bite, [Delta][Epsilon], of about 15 MeV are captured. About 15 MeV is therefore the positron beam absolute energy spread. Higher efficiencies can be obtained at the expense of increasing [Delta][Epsilon], but the resulting beam absolute energy spread would not be accepted by the following stages of the machine. In order to limit the charge in the primary electron bunch so as to avoid too strong an interaction with the accelerating structure, and taking into account the fact that the conversion efficiency is proportional to the energy of the electrons, it is advisable to convert electrons into positrons at the highest possible energy. Another important design parameter that determines the minimum energy to which positrons have to be accelerated before being injected into the machine is the maximum relative energy spread tolerated by the first recirculation arc; it has been assumed throughout that it is at most 4%. Given the absolute energy spread of the positrons at production and folding-in the spread induced by the interaction of the bunch with the accelerating structure, the minimum energy of the positron beam entering the first recirculation arc cmes out to be about 450 MeV. Since before entering the arc the beam passes once through one side of the machine accelerating structure, thereby gaining 350 Me, it has to be accelerated by the injection linac following the converter to at least 100 MeV. A one-sided race track acceleration scheme could be considered. Another fundamental design specification that has to be dealt with at injection level concerns the possibility of producing electron beams with an emittance to match that specified for the beams in collision (namely a normalized emittance [epsilon]{sub n} {=} 2 x 10−6 mrad) in order to save the complication and expense of passing through a damping ring. For positrons this is not possible since they are of course created with a very large emittance and a damping ring is mandatory. Values of the normalized emittance as small as the specified can only be obtained by careful design and require an improvement over what is commonly achieved by a factor {=} 3.

Book excerpt: Modern high-energy particle accelerators and synchrotron light sources demand smaller and smaller beam emittances in order to achieve higher luminosity or better brightness. For light particles such as electrons and positrons, radiation damping is a natural and effective way to obtain low emittance beams. However, the quantum aspect of radiation introduces random noise into the damped beams, yielding equilibrium emittances which depend upon the design of a specific machine. In this dissertation, the author attempts to make a complete analysis of the process of radiation damping and quantum excitation in various accelerator systems, such as bending magnets, focusing channels and laser fields. Because radiation is formed over a finite time and emitted in quanta of discrete energies, he invokes the quantum mechanical approach whenever the quasiclassical picture of radiation is insufficient. He shows that radiation damping in a focusing system is fundamentally different from that in a bending system. Quantum excitation to the transverse dimensions is absent in a straight, continuous focusing channel, and is exponentially suppressed in a focusing-dominated ring. Thus, the transverse normalized emittances in such systems can in principle be damped to the Compton wavelength of the electron, limited only by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. In addition, he investigates methods of rapid damping such as radiative laser cooling. He proposes a laser-electron storage ring (LESR) where the electron beam in a compact storage ring repetitively interacts with an intense laser pulse stored in an optical resonator. The laser-electron interaction gives rise to rapid cooling of electron beams and can be used to overcome the space charge effects encountered in a medium energy circular machine. Applications to the designs of low emittance damping rings and compact x-ray sources are also explored.
