Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanium alloys, due to unique physical and chemical properties (mainly high relative strength combined with very good corrosion resistance), are considered as an important structural metallic material used in hi-tech industries (e.g. aerospace, space technology). This book provides information on new manufacturing and processing methods of single- and two-phase titanium alloys. The eight chapters of this book are distributed over four sections. The first section (Introduction) indicates the main factors determining application areas of titanium and its alloys. The second section (Manufacturing, two chapters) concerns modern production methods for titanium and its alloys. The third section (Thermomechanical and surface treatment, three chapters) covers problems of thermomechanical processing and surface treatment used for single- and two-phase titanium alloys. The fourth section (Machining, two chapters) describes the recent results of high speed machining of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the possibility of application of sustainable machining for titanium alloys.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Unified Mechanics Theory with Applications by : Cemal Basaran
Download or read book Introduction to Unified Mechanics Theory with Applications written by Cemal Basaran and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text describes the mathematical formulation and proof of the unified mechanics theory (UMT) which is based on the unification of Newton’s laws and the laws of thermodynamics. It also presents formulations and experimental verifications of the theory for thermal, mechanical, electrical, corrosion, chemical and fatigue loads, and it discusses why the original universal laws of motion proposed by Isaac Newton in 1687 are incomplete. The author provides concrete examples, such as how Newton’s second law, F = ma, gives the initial acceleration of a soccer ball kicked by a player, but does not tell us how and when the ball would come to a stop. Over the course of Introduction to Unified Mechanics Theory, Dr. Basaran illustrates that Newtonian mechanics does not account for the thermodynamic changes happening in a system over its usable lifetime. And in this context, this book explains how to design a system to perform its intended functions safely over its usable life time and predicts the expected lifetime of the system without using empirical models, a process currently done using Newtonian mechanics and empirical degradation/failure/fatigue models which are curve-fit to test data. Written as a textbook suitable for upper-level undergraduate mechanics courses, as well as first year graduate level courses, this book is the result of over 25 years of scientific activity with the contribution of dozens of scientists from around the world including USA, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Spain, China, India and U.K.

Book Synopsis Low Cycle Fatigue and Elasto-Plastic Behaviour of Materials by : P.D. Portella
Download or read book Low Cycle Fatigue and Elasto-Plastic Behaviour of Materials written by P.D. Portella and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-09-30 with total page 890 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 4th International Conference on Low Cycle Fatigue and Elasto-Plastic Behaviour of Materials was held from 7-11 September 1998 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. In response to a call for papers, nearly 200 extended abstracts from 32 countries were submitted to the organizing committee. These papers were presented at the conference as invited lectures or short contributions and as oral or poster presentation. All the papers were presented in poster form in extended poster sessions–a peculiarity of the LCF Conferences which allows an intense, thorough discussion of all contributions. Each chapter provides a comprehensive overview of a materials class or a given subject. Many contributions could have been included in two or even three chapters and so, in order to give a better overview of the content, the reader will find a subject index, a material index and an author index in the back of the book.

Book excerpt: The Science, Technology and Application of Titanium contains the proceedings of an International Conference organized by the Institute of Metals, The Metallurgical Society of AIME, and the American Society for Metals in association with the Japan Institute of Metals and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and held at the Royal Festival Hall in London, on May 21-24, 1968. The papers explore scientific and technological developments as well as applications of titanium and cover topics ranging from processing of titanium to its chemical and environmental behavior, physics, thermodynamics, and kinetics. Deformation and fracture, phase transformations and heat treatment, and alloying are also discussed. This book is comprised of 114 chapters and begins with an overview of the titanium industry in Europe and the United States. The reader is then introduced to primary and secondary fabrication of titanium; corrosion and oxidation; physical properties of titanium alloys; interaction of titanium with elements of the periodic system; and elastic interactions between dislocations and twin and grain boundaries in titanium. The crystallography of deformation twinning in titanium is also examined, along with superplasticity and transformation plasticity in titanium. The remaining chapters focus on interstitial strengthening of titanium alloys; mechanism of martensitic transformation in titanium and its alloys; phase relationships in titanium-oxygen alloys; strengthening of titanium alloys by shock deformation; and titanium hot forming. This monograph will be of interest to chemists and metallurgists.

Book Synopsis Shot-peening and Low-cycle Fatigue of Titanium Alloys by : Yugang Li
Download or read book Shot-peening and Low-cycle Fatigue of Titanium Alloys written by Yugang Li and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two problems when investigating the effects of shot-peening on fatigue process. The first one is characterizing residual stresses (RS) and strain hardening (WH) on the sample surface. The second one is the evolution of RS and WH during fatigue. In order to solve the first problem, this thesis proposes a “simultaneous function method” to measure RS and WH with nanoindentation. Accumulated plastic strain (PP) is used to represent WH. Then, by establishing functions of normalized indentation responses through a series of finite element method (FEM) simulations, normalized indentation responses obtained from nanoindentation experiments can be used to extract RS and PP values, assuming that the constitutive behavior is known. Although the simultaneous function method shows fairly high accuracy from a pure numerical view point, experiments performed on T40 commercial pure titanium are not completely satisfying. However, if the residual stress profile is known, the method can be used to derive the work hardening profile. In order to study the second problem, a series of strain-controlled fatigue tests are performed on Ti-18 alloy. Fatigue specimens of 4 material states, including raw, shot-peened, prestrained and prestrained + shot-peened, were tested under 3 different strain amplitudes over 100 cycles. X-ray diffraction tests on the sample surfaces showed that the RS relaxation and the cyclic softening increase together with the strain amplitude. IIT tests showed that shot-peening may induce a softening of the surface of Ti-18 alloy samples.

Book Synopsis Effect of Stress-Strain Behavior on Low-Cycle Fatigue of Alpha-Beta Titanium Alloys by : J. M. Krafft
Download or read book Effect of Stress-Strain Behavior on Low-Cycle Fatigue of Alpha-Beta Titanium Alloys written by J. M. Krafft and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In earlier NRL work, Ti-6Al-4V in four levels of interstitial oxygen content and a single Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V alloy plate were heat treated to alter grain size and/or microstructural character; the effect on fatigue crack propagation rate was measured. In this work, small tensile specimens of these materials are subjected to slow strain-controlled cyclic deformation leading to rupture in the 5-500 cycle range. Indication of crack initiation as well as rupture life are compared relative to the plastic excursion strain. On this basis, effects of grain size and oxygen content are not clearly discriminated. Yet, some of the materials exhibit markedly performance. This improvement seems to be related to a characteristic evolution in the shape of the cyclic stress-strain curve. Here, relative to a full convex hysteresis loop of early cycles, the later cycles exhibit a reduced stress level, or cyclic softening, in the first half of the excursion, followed by a resurgence of strength to initial stress levels in the latter portion. The enhanced strain hardening rate enabling this terminal strength restoration is thought to stabilize the deformation, reducing the amount of stress-relaxation-induced tensile strain. Taking such strain as an increment of damage in a cumulative cyclic creep strain criterion provides a correlation between the evolving shape of the cyclic stress-strain curve and the low cycle fatigue endurance. Results indicate the absolute increase in the terminal plastic strain hardening rate to be a constant of a material, independent of the cyclic strain excursion. (Author).
