Book excerpt: Removal of dissolved trace metals from highway runoff is one of the most important challenges in highway runoff pollution control. In the present study the target metal of interest was zinc (Zn). Adsorption of Zn onto manganese (Mn) oxide coated media was investigated. Two media - sand and cement, were coated with MnO2. The structures of manganese oxide coated sand (MOCS) and Manganese oxide coated cement (MOCM) were studied in detail. The SEM images reveal a significantly porous MOCM with spherical manganese oxide deposits. The MOCS on the other hand showed a comparatively less surface roughness. Batch adsorption studies were conducted at three pH values of 5, 7 and 9. A high value of distribution coefficient (Kd) for the MOCM indicated that MOCM might be a promising adsorbent for removal of Zn when compared with MOS. The Freundlich isotherm model fitted the batch adsorption data very well. The removal was the highest at pH 9 for MOS but MOCM showed the same removal capacity at pH 7 and 9. Comparison with coated media (Mn oxide coated polymeric media) studied previously was done which showed MOCM to have a higher affinity Zn and hence better removal capacity.

Book excerpt: Among various water and wastewater treatment technologies, the adsorption process is considered better because of lower cost, simple design and easy operation. Activated carbon (a universal adsorbent) is generally used for the removal of diverse types of pollutants from water and wastewater. Research is now being directed towards the modification of carbon surfaces to enhance its adsorption potential towards specific pollutants. However, widespread use of commercial activated carbon is sometimes restricted especially in developing or poor countries due to its higher costs. Attempts are therefore being made to develop inexpensive adsorbents utilizing abundant natural materials, agricultural and industrial waste materials. Use of waste materials as low-cost adsorbents is attractive due to their contribution in the reduction of costs for waste disposal, therefore contributing to environmental protection. This e-book explores knowledge on recent developments in adsorbents synthesis and their use in water pollution control. This handy reference work is intended for researchers and scientists actively engaged in the study of adsorption and the development and application of efficient adsorption technology for water treatment. This e-book covers a wide range of topics including modeling aspects of adsorption process and the applications of conventional and non-conventional adsorbents in water remediation emphasizing sorption mechanisms of different pollutants on the adsorbents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adsorption processes are extensively used in wastewater treatment for heavy metal removal. The most widely used adsorbent is activated carbon giving the best of results but it,Äôs high cost limits its use. It has a high cost of production and regeneration. As the world today faces a shortage of freshwater resources, it is inevitable to look for alternatives that lessen the burden on existing resources. Also, heavy metals are toxic even in trace concentrations, so an environmentally safe method of their removal necessitated the requirement of low cost adsorbents. Adsorption is a cost-effective technique and gained recognition due to its minimum waste disposal advantage. This chapter focuses on the process of adsorption and the types of adsorbent available today. It also encompasses the low-cost adsorbents ranging from agricultural waste to industrial waste explaining the adsorption reaction condition. The cost-effectiveness, technical applicability and easy availability of raw material with low negative impact on the system are the precursors in selecting the adsorbents. The novelty of the chapter lies in covering a wide range of adsorbents with their efficiency in removal of heavy metals from wastewater.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing population across the globe paved the way for rapid growth in industrialization. Pharmaceuticals, automotive, textiles, agriculture, electronics, electrical and many other industries discharge different types of heavy metals, dyes and organic contaminants into ground water. These discharges are released into lakes and rivers without prior treatment causing huge environmental impact to the environment. Among different remediation techniques, adsorption was considered the most promising method because of its low-cost and high efficiency. Biomass is considered as the most practical and renewable source for production of bio products and biofuels. Biomass is also used for carbon sequestration and as an essential element to produce hydrochar and biochar which are considered as the 21st century black gold. Hydrochar and biochar can be used as an excellent low-cost adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals, dyes and organic contaminants from water. This dissertation work focuses on, firstly, development of novel oxone treated hydrochar as an adsorbent for the efficient removal of Pb(II) and Methylene Blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. Secondly, preparing novel ozone oxidized hydrochar treated with polyethyleneimine for removal of Remzol Brilliant Blue (RBB) and Remzol Reactive Black (RRB) dyes from aqueous solutions. Thirdly, producing high-performance CO2 activated biochar as an adsorbent for efficient removal of Aniline from aqueous solution. All prepared hydrochar and biochar adsorbents were characterized by SEM, TGA, FTIR, Elemental analysis, conductometric titration, and N2 adsorption-desorption isothermal analyses (BET and BJH). The adsorption capacities were determined by Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-VIS) respectively. The adsorption capacity of each prepared biochar or hydrochar was determined and both kinetic and isothermal studies were performed. The optimal preparation conditions and adsorption parameters were determined for each adsorbent.

However the growing industrialization and extensive use of chemicals for various concerns, has increased the burden of unwanted pollutants in the drinking water of developing countries like India. The entry of potentially hazardous substances into the biota has been magnifying day by day. In the absence of a possible stoppage of these, otherwise, useful chemicals, the only way to maintain safer water bodies is to develop efficient purifying technologies. One such immensely beneficial procedure that has been in use is that of purification of water using 'adsorbents'. Indigenous minerals and natural plants products have potential for removing many pollutants viz. fluoride, arsenic, nitrate, heavy metals, pesticides as well as tri-halomethanes. Adsorbents which are derived from carbon, alumina, zeolite, clay minerals, iron ores, industrial by products, and natural products viz. parts of the plants, herbs and algal biomass offer promising potential of removal of these pollutants with greater adsorbing efficiencies.

Book excerpt: Water pollution is a serious threat to mankind in the present scenario and, hence, many techniques are in use for water treatment. Out of them the adsorption is a commonly used method as it is simple, fast, and universal in nature. Typically, activated carbon is used as a perfect adsorbent for wastewater treatment but it is overpriced and requires regeneration. The regenerated carbon exhibits lower adsorption capacity with further management problem of the effluent obtained from its regeneration. These facts have grown interest in the search for solid waste based low cost alternatives of activated carbon that can be used for water pollutant removal. This book tells how (i) to develop low cost adsorbents from waste materials (ii) to remove toxic pollutants by using developed low cost adsorbents (iii) to optimize adsorption parameters for the maximum removal of pollutants by using developed low cost adsorbent through batch process (iv) to transfer batch adsorption conditions to the column studies; to evaluate the feasibility of the developed adsorption system in real samples (v) to ascertain adsorption mechanism for applying the developed adsorption system effectively & practically.
