Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: YOU WALK FROM THE DOCTOR’S SURGERY CONFUSED. All the blood tests are normal. You don’t drink (much), you don’t smoke, your blood pressure and heart function are normal. You are not diabetic, overweight, have a genetic disorder or a particular illness. You might already be eating a sensible diet of fruit and veg with low fat, wholegrains and protein. You might even be a member of a fitness club. So why does fatigue dog some of your days? Add some or all of the following: dry skin, crusty eyes, hair loss, thrush, migraines, bloating, dizzy spells, nausea, constipation, depression, water retention, swollen joints and a stubborn spare-tyre around the middle. The cause the health-gremlins may have been speculated upon: borderline diabetes, food intolerances, an immune disorder or SAD. Hypothyroidism would seem to fit, but all tests are normal. I know because these health gremlins have dogged most of my adult life. After a health crisis where I started losing my hair, I threw away my bag of medication and embarked upon diet and health supplement trials. All records have been meticulously kept and posted on a personal blog over several months. I have now written this book to share with you my findings which shocked and surprised me. All photographs are of me, retaining my anonymity, due to the personal nature of the information contained. Whether you are a teenager, middle-aged or on the menopause, it seems these health-gremlins (as I call them) have to be accepted as part of being human. But it doesn’t have to be this way. This book is written for those who suffer the health-gremlins without a known cause despite health checks and blood tests. You will find the hard truths here, one of which is that your health is not that far away. The banish-your-health-gremlins journey has begun. With 30,000 words and over 100 images. Note: always seek the advice of your doctor or specialist before making changes to your medication, diet, exercise or lifestyle.

Book excerpt: Identify the possibility of hypothyroidism when the patient's symptoms include fatigue, constipation, feeling cold, impaired memory and slow heart rate. The disease is common and its symptoms may be vague. Diagnosis of hypothyroidism and treatment of hypothyroidism originating in the thyroid gland (primary hypothyroidism) are tasks of the primary health care.Hypothyroidism is easy to confirm or exclude by determining serum TSH and free T4 (FT4) concentrations.Remember that hypothyroidism can be the cause of high serum cholesterol or creatine kinase (CK) concentrations. In replacement therapy, a young or middle-aged patient usually feels best if TSH concentration is about 1–2 mU/l and FT4 concentration is close to the upper limit of the reference range.Elderly patients with e.g. angina pectoris or arrhythmias often are more susceptible to the effects of thyroxine. In them, the maintenance dose remains slightly lower and TSH concentration respectively a little higher.Ultrasonography has no role in the investigation of hypothyroidism (unless it is indicated by the findings on palpation).Thyroxine should not be used for the treatment of e.g. depression, low energy level or overweight in a person who is biochemically euthyroid.

Book excerpt: By the Author of the Bestselling book: Low Body Temperatures but Not Hypothyroid: How I Banished my Health Gremlins & Lost Weight through Thermogenic Foods & Burst Training. Having suffered regular and chronic migraines for most of my adult life, I came to believe that this debilitating condition forms part of something much bigger, making its definition ‘a bad headache’ grossly inaccurate. After suffering a recent health crisis, where various ‘gremlins’ began to sap the quality from my life, I decided to conduct dietary trials which inspired me to write my first book, Low Body Temperatures but Not Hypothyroid... One of the aims of my research was migraine elimination. Supported by fastidious records which have been posted on my CutTheJunk blog, as well as scholarly articles and respected websites, I discovered a way of reducing the incidence and intensity of my migraines to a point where they now seldom occur. I believe most migraineurs can also do the same. In logical vein, this book begins with the basics about migraines, progressing to an in-depth look at about how abnormal hormonal function can trigger migraine attacks and what can be done to put this right. Find also a guide to the traditional treatment for migraines, a crash course on the endocrine system and an anti-migraine diet summary. With illustrations, photos and a few surprises along the way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revolutionary program of short burst, high-intensity exercise that uses your body's signals to curb hunger as it burns fat and builds muscle Over the last 26 years, thyroid pioneer Denis Wilson, MD, has trained thousands of physicians on the crucial relationships between the thyroid system, metabolism, and body temperature. He’s heard patients recount their inability to get fit using conventional approaches, and he’s understood their frustration. Based on the latest medical research, Dr. Wilson has created fastercise, a revolutionary practice that uses brief, strategically timed bursts of exercise to cancel hunger pangs, allowing people to more easily stick to a healthy eating plan and shift their bodies toward becoming leaner, faster, smarter, stronger, and healthier. Fastercise holds the promise of vindicating and liberating many of those who have struggled to improve their fitness, enabling them to transform their lives and reach their full potential. By combining simple analogies and clear explanations of the physiology of the body’s energy pathways and response to food and exercise, Dr. Wilson reveals how conventional approaches to dieting and weight management can actually fight against the body’s priorities and lead to frustration and poor results. Fastercise is a time-efficient, convenient, and natural approach powerfully signals the body to burn fat and build muscle synergistically, leading to surprisingly beneficial and quick results. The Power of Fastercise explains how fastercise can help you: • Burn fat without going hungry • Build your mitochondria to burn more fat and provide greater energy • Stimulate muscle growth in just a few minutes a day • Shift your body composition to less fat and more muscle • Boost your body temperature and metabolic rate • Look and feel younger • Increase mental focus, learning, and productivity • Decrease insulin resistance • Decrease inflammation and improve immune function • Improve respiratory fitness and athletic performance • Get great results with any healthy diet, including low-carb and high-carb In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Wilson lays out simple, practical strategies for combining fastercise with smart eating choices. Fastercise can provide excellent results for a wide range of people: seasoned athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and even those who dislike exercising or have physical limitations. Whatever your fitness goals are, fastercise can help you achieve them.

Book excerpt: Approximately 29 million Americans are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes annually. Of that number, only about 36 percent (10.44 million diabetes sufferers) achieve satisfactory medical outcomes and would need additional help—rarely available—to reliably control their glucose levels. Contrary to popular belief, although anti-diabetic medications can lower sugar levels, nevertheless they have a poor performance track record because inflammation in the blood vessels persists. This book details recent scientific findings that cardiovascular, kidney, vision, peripheral nervous system, and other body damage caused by chronic high levels of blood sugar (hyperglycemia) in Type 2 diabetes is actually due to excessive generation of unopposed free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS). These, in turn, cause chronic systemic inflammation and dysfunction of the endothelial lining of the arterial blood vessels, jeopardizing the formation of the protective molecule nitric oxide (NO), thus severely impairing the blood supply to every organ and tissue in the body. This book also catalogues the evidence that chronic hyperglycemia causes profound and often irreversible damage—even long before Type 2 diabetes has been diagnosed. In addition, because conventional prescription treatments are, unfortunately, often inadequate, the book details evidence-based complementary means of blood sugar control.

Losing weight is not simply a matter of cutting calories or increasing exercise. The body's management of calories involves every organ system and is influenced by such far-ranging variables as food and environmental allergies; prescription medications; environmental toxins; sexual, emotional, or physical abuse; and other highly personal factors. In fact, the secret of weight management is that it must be geared to your particular body and your special needs. Weight Success for a Lifetime is designed to help you discover how to understand your particular body, so you can lose unwanted pounds and keep them off forever. Noted weight-management expert Carol Simontacchi has designed this comprehensive weight-management program based on a 48-week curriculum, with twelve lessons in four modules. In the first module, Living Successfully with Food, she discusses such topics as what makes a healthy diet, why most diets don't work, and how to change your set point to help you lose weight more easily. She also covers how to cope with food cravings, food allergies, and binge eating. The second module, Getting the Body Back into Shape, covers such lifestyle issues as how to create a personal exercise plan, digestion, and ridding the body of toxins. The Hidden Issues of Weight Management, the third module, is devoted to medical issues, including depression, hormone dysfunction, problems related to stress, and side effects of prescription medications. The final module, Healing the Heart and the Mind, delves into how to have fun with food, dealing with abuse issues, fear of success and body image, dressing for personal beauty, and making health a lifelong journey. This all-inclusive, time-tested program is designed to help you achieve permanent weight loss forever. Book jacket.
