Book excerpt: Winner of a 2020 Catholic Press Association book award (first place, backlist beauty). Do you ever feel caught in an endless cycle of working harder and longer to get more while enjoying life less? The Stewart family did—and they decided to make a radical change. Popular Catholic blogger and podcaster Haley Stewart explains how a year-long internship on a sustainable farm changed her family’s life for the better, allowing them to live gospel values more intentionally. When Haley Stewart married her bee-keeping sweetheart, Daniel, they dreamed of a life centered on home and family. But as the children arrived and Daniel was forced to work longer hours at a job he liked less and less, they dared to break free from the unending cycle of getting more yet feeling unfufilled. They sold their Florida home and retreated to Texas to live on a farm with a compost toilet and 650 square feet of space for a family of five. Surprisingly, they found that they had never been happier. In The Grace of Enough, Stewart shares essential elements of intentional Christian living that her family discovered during that extraordinary year on the farm and that they continue to practice today. You, too, will be inspired to: live simply offer hospitality revive food culture and the family table reconnect with the land nurture community prioritize beauty develop a sense of wonder be intentional about technology seek authentic intimacy center life around home, family, and relationships Drawing from Pope Francis’s encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si’, Stewart identifies elements of Catholic social teaching that will enhance your life and create a ripple effect of grace to help you overcome the effects of today’s “throwaway” culture and experience a deeper satisfaction and stronger faith.

Book excerpt: I find this book a beautiful piece of retrospective writing full of sensitive insight and tender descriptions. The introduction is quite breathtaking as an anticipation of the events that will come later and is also a glimpse into the authors thoughts and, especially, his character. The introduction is also important in the way that it starts the question about the arrogance of society in relation to the painful misfortune of a person enduring a so-called mental illness. Society lifts its shield of indifference in order to build its precarious opulence out of the pain of the mentally ill person. I became familiar with the way that events are communicated so powerfully and particularly enjoyed witnessing the journey through the hardships and wonders of the authors adolescence in Africa. I was taken by the miracle of his description of the mysterious landscapes and places that inhabit his many memories. His work in various farms, weekends with friends, the awakening of love, his impressions of the Zulu workers, and the motorbikeall early memories that have a mix of innocence and candid enthusiasm colored by tender sensuality. The episode with the girls in the bus leaves the impression of being at one with the author in being fully aware of the experience while being acutely conscious of his feelings and meanings. In another chapter I found myself dramatically touching his experiences as a schoolboy in England and the difficulties of learning and relearning the peculiarities of the culture and the feelings of vulnerability finding his place in a foreign country. The author shows a lot of courage enduring this moment in his life. Another one of my favorite chapters was the unforgettable journey across Australia as a hitchhiker. A journey colored by freedom and friendship. Everything in the book is an anticipation of the authors meeting with Belinda. All women (including Beauty) are only affinities that have led to the real essence of love, all preparations for it. It is not difficult to understand the authors good fortune at being capable of holding in his mind and dreams the power of love and to be loved by a woman. This is the heart of the book. The mix of styles and poetry is powerful strength of the book. Many great authors have tried these combinations (Goethe, Emerson, Flaubert, and even Shakespeare) with amazing aesthetical results. The poet knows the language of the spirit. Life and death; love and sadness, loneliness are all mystical reflections which are the nourishments of the poems. All elements of the authors reality are beautifully drawn in a rhythmic space. This book travels beyond the intentions of comprehension of a medical condition. The mental pain experienced during the outbreak of depression is the material which gives birth to a reflective piece of art. Beauty comes from unexpected sources and this book is about the beauty of life.

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

This book contains a beautiful meditation on Mary, Mother of God and so much more. Reading this book will bring you closer to Our Blessed Mother, and hence, to Christ Himself. Filled with lyrical prose and touching analogies, the author shows how Mary was the "Reed of God" and that we are all vessels waiting to do God's work, and carrying Christ within us.

Book excerpt: Tika has her heart set on getting a spot on the soccer team. In this story, she has many exchanges with family and friends, and they all offer her advice on how best to achieve her goal. Ultimately, through late night conversation with her beloved bear-friend Emri, she is reminded of the wisdom she carries within, and the importance of listening to your heart. She learns that promising “I’ll be happy when/if” postpones the happiness we could be luxuriating in today, and that we need to be in charge of that happiness ourselves instead of giving that power to others. We know that we have innate knowledge — that feeling in our gut when all evidence points elsewhere can’t be denied. We need to remember to trust in this, as well as the good advice of others. The story also touches on the concept of worry, and trying to be what others expect of us. Anyone who has ever really really wanted something will relate to this story.

Now with Evensong, she again translates our everyday existence into soul-touching truths as she brings to brilliantly realized life the people of a small Smoky Mountain town--and a woman whose world is indelibly altered by them.

They described their problem as: 'I love you but I'm not in love with you'. Noticing how widespread the phenomenon had become, he decided to look more closely. Why were these relationships becoming defined more by companionship than by passion, and why was companionship no longer enough? From his research Andrew has devised his own unique programme. By looking at how a couple communicate, argue, share love, take responsibility, give and learn he offers in seven steps a reassuring and empowering map for how two individuals can better understand themselves, strengthen their bond and recover that lost magic.

Book excerpt: Most writers, composers, librettists, and music directors who make their careers in musical theatre do so without specific training or clear pathways to progress through the industry. Conversations with Women in Musical Theatre Leadership addresses that absence by drawing on the experiences of these women to show the many and varied routes to successful careers on, off, and beyond Broadway. Conversations with Women in Musical Theatre Leadership features 15 interviews with Broadway-level musical theatre music directors, directors, writers, composers, lyricists, stage managers, orchestrators, music arrangers, and other women in positions of leadership. Built around extensive interviews with women at the top of their careers in the creative and leadership spheres of musical theatre, these first-hand accounts offer insight into the jobs themselves, the skills that they require, and how those skills can be developed. Any students of musical theatre and stagecraft, no matter what level and in what setting from professional training to university and conservatory study, will find this a valuable asset.
