Book excerpt: Spanking Is a Global Phenomenon looks at this traditional method of corporal punishment from a deep perspective, placing it in its historical context, and from a wide point of view, comparing changing attitudes across cultures and generations. The result of this survey by Fenold Alexis is a work on a topic broadly connected to peoples lives, but rarely examined in such detail. The approach of Spanking Is a Global Phenomenon takes the reader through the history and tradition of spanking, the roles of culture and religions, the connections to slavery, the laws governing spanking, and a survey of attitudes and practices by gender and generation. In the end, Spanking Is a Global Phenomenon provides a comprehensive look at a widespread and deeply rooted parenting practice that tends not to garner such thorough attention. Fenold Alexis explores spankings scriptural and historical background, surveys its legal and cultural contexts in contemporary culture, and suggests ways for parents to administer alternative forms of discipline that work.

Book Synopsis Touched by Bipolar by : Joss Smith Wesson
Download or read book Touched by Bipolar written by Joss Smith Wesson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I find this book a beautiful piece of retrospective writing full of sensitive insight and tender descriptions. The introduction is quite breathtaking as an anticipation of the events that will come later and is also a glimpse into the authors thoughts and, especially, his character. The introduction is also important in the way that it starts the question about the arrogance of society in relation to the painful misfortune of a person enduring a so-called mental illness. Society lifts its shield of indifference in order to build its precarious opulence out of the pain of the mentally ill person. I became familiar with the way that events are communicated so powerfully and particularly enjoyed witnessing the journey through the hardships and wonders of the authors adolescence in Africa. I was taken by the miracle of his description of the mysterious landscapes and places that inhabit his many memories. His work in various farms, weekends with friends, the awakening of love, his impressions of the Zulu workers, and the motorbikeall early memories that have a mix of innocence and candid enthusiasm colored by tender sensuality. The episode with the girls in the bus leaves the impression of being at one with the author in being fully aware of the experience while being acutely conscious of his feelings and meanings. In another chapter I found myself dramatically touching his experiences as a schoolboy in England and the difficulties of learning and relearning the peculiarities of the culture and the feelings of vulnerability finding his place in a foreign country. The author shows a lot of courage enduring this moment in his life. Another one of my favorite chapters was the unforgettable journey across Australia as a hitchhiker. A journey colored by freedom and friendship. Everything in the book is an anticipation of the authors meeting with Belinda. All women (including Beauty) are only affinities that have led to the real essence of love, all preparations for it. It is not difficult to understand the authors good fortune at being capable of holding in his mind and dreams the power of love and to be loved by a woman. This is the heart of the book. The mix of styles and poetry is powerful strength of the book. Many great authors have tried these combinations (Goethe, Emerson, Flaubert, and even Shakespeare) with amazing aesthetical results. The poet knows the language of the spirit. Life and death; love and sadness, loneliness are all mystical reflections which are the nourishments of the poems. All elements of the authors reality are beautifully drawn in a rhythmic space. This book travels beyond the intentions of comprehension of a medical condition. The mental pain experienced during the outbreak of depression is the material which gives birth to a reflective piece of art. Beauty comes from unexpected sources and this book is about the beauty of life.
Download or read book Vinyl written by Mike Evans and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of the LP is a must-have for any music connoisseur! When vinyl LP records took over the music industry in the late 1950s, a new era began. No longer bound by the time constraints of the shellac 78s that had been in use since the 1910s, recording artists could now present an entire album—rather than a lone three-minute single—on a vinyl LP, giving listeners a completely new way to experience their music. In recent years, vinyl has found a second life as an art form, collected and appreciated by music connoisseurs across the world. Vinyl: The Art of Making Records examines the origins of the vinyl format and its evolution throughout the 20th century, and also provides an in-depth look at how vinyl LPs are manufactured and packaged—often with striking artwork that makes them beloved by music enthusiasts today. Also included are four removable art prints, each representing a sample of album covers from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

Book Synopsis Romantic Capabilities by : Mike Goode
Download or read book Romantic Capabilities written by Mike Goode and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-02 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romantic Capabilities discusses the relationship between popular new media uses of literary texts. Devising and modelling an original critical methodology that bridges historicist literary criticism and reception studies with media studies and formalism, this volume contends that how a literary text behaves when it encounters new media reveals medial capabilities of the text that can transform how we understand its significance for the original historical context for which it was created. Following an introductory theoretical chapter that explains the book's unconventional approach to the archive, Romantic Capabilities analyzes significant popular "media behaviors" exhibited by three major Romantic British literary corpuses: the viral circulation of William Blake's pictures and proverbs across contemporary media, the gravitation of Victorian panorama painters and 3D photographers to Walter Scott's historical fictions, and the ongoing popular practice of writing fanfiction set in the worlds of Jane Austen's novels and their imaginary country estates. The result is a book that reveals Blake to be an important early theorist of viral media and the law, Scott's novels to be studies in vision that helped give rise to modern immersive media, and Austenian realism to be a mode of ecological design whose project fanfiction grasps and extends. It offers insight into the politics of virality, the dependence of immersion on a sense of frame, and the extent to which eighteenth-century landscape gardening anticipated Deleuzian ideas of the "virtual" by granting existence to reality's as-yet-unrealized capabilities.

Book Synopsis Doors of the Church Are Open: Smoke & Mirrors by Sonya Shuman by : Sonya Shuman

This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the life of the Golden family. Al Golden, a man. A reformed drug dealer turned entrepreneur and pastor of the largest church in Newark, New Jersey. The Goldens have it all: Looks, fame, fortune, faith and God's favor. Another thing they have that is not so apparent to the untrained eye of the public that praises them, is flaws. Lauded and loved by the residents of the city of Newark they can do no wrong. Or so it seems from the outside looking in. The invisible dome that had surrounded the Golden family for so long begins to crack beneath the weight of unresolved issues and grief at the passing of their beloved Carla Golden, the matriarch. The Goldens shiny exterior begins to tarnish before everyone's very eyes as their past comes back to haunt them and bad habits hidden in the darkness; secrets held behind the closed doors and the velvet rope of the pulpit of the church are brought to light. Will they survive under the weight of the pressure of exposure? In mid fall off of the religious pedestals set so high by the community, do they have the strength to keep their composure? A microcosm for the hypocrisy that lies underneath the covers of American society, the Golden family, a sleeping giant, is about to be exposed. A tale of truth and lies; loss, lust, love, life and grace and humanity; They are left to wonder if their faith has failed them or if they are their own undoing. Can this Golden family survive the impending implosion that is their lives? This is a barrier breaking story about the rise and fall of the kings of the church. A narrative that depicts reality in the raw. It is humanity, heaven, hell and high water for the reader. Not for the faint of heart, it is an adventurous drama that reflects the real lives of the haves and the have nots. Dispelling religious dogma, this deep read serves salvation and nakedness. A must read. This work will change the life of every reader and make you rethink your relationship with yourself, God and others. You are guaranteed to never be the same after ingesting this soul food. I wrote this book to dispel myths about God, salvation, people and life. What influenced the journey to The Doors... were my experiences at various churches over the years. Me being a confused Christian having been trapped by religion. Having been beaten into submitting to man's will, not that of God. Fortunately enough, I was not raised in a religious household. In hindsight, I believe that as a youth, I may have enjoyed too much freedom. Because of such libertarian rearing or lack thereof, depending upon view, worshipping authoritative figures has never been a priority on my list. I have always been rebellious in that aspect. Keeping in mind, I believe in giving respect where it is due, in the same token, I am also a firm believer that God is no respecter of persons not withstanding, there is a time and place for everything. Even Jesus encouraged people to render to Caesar what was his. Give respect and honor where it is indeed due. There is a way to come before kings as God is a God of order. As there is God-ordained authority and leadership where in fact we must submit in many instances, We must bear in mind, dominion and authority are not given exclusively to "men" as in the sex, per se. Often times where we see "man" or "men" in biblical text, it means the whole of humanity. Not just males. Not just leadership. We all have something to bring to the table. As equally, we are all very flawed creatures who ourselves need to submit to the leadership of God's Holy Spirit.
Book Synopsis A Portrait of the Auteur as Fanboy by : Anastasia Salter
Download or read book A Portrait of the Auteur as Fanboy written by Anastasia Salter and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly over the past decade, fan credentials on the part of writers, directors, and producers have come to be seen as a guarantee of quality media making—the “fanboy auteur.” Figures like Joss Whedon are both one of “us” and one of “them.” This is a strategy of marketing and branding—it is a claim from the auteur himself or industry PR machines that the presence of an auteur who is also a fan means the product is worth consuming. Such claims that fan credentials guarantee quality are often contested, with fans and critics alike rejecting various auteur figures as the true leader of their respective franchises. That split, between assertions of fan and auteur status and acceptance (or not) of that status, is key to unravelling the fan auteur. In A Portrait of the Auteur as Fanboy: The Construction of Authorship in Transmedia Franchises, authors Anastasia Salter and Mel Stanfill examine this phenomenon through a series of case studies featuring fanboys. The volume discusses both popular fanboys, such as J. J. Abrams, Kevin Smith, and Joss Whedon, as well as fangirls like J. K. Rowling, E L James, and Patty Jenkins, and dissects how the fanboy-fangirl auteur dichotomy is constructed and defended by popular media and fans in online spaces, and how this discourse has played in maintaining the exclusionary status quo of geek culture. This book is particularly timely given current discourse, including such incidents as the controversy surrounding Joss Whedon’s so-called feminism, the publication of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and contestation over authorial voices in the DC cinematic universe, as well as broader conversations about toxic masculinity and sexual harassment in Hollywood.
