Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 45: September-October, 1993 As I watched the colorful queues wind their way along the downtown route, I, too, raised my hands and voice in jubilation, for I was the first scientist to actually document the trans Gulf phenomenon in October 1991. Now, three years later, the monarch mascot was a fitting tribute not only to the butterfly, but to that discovery as well. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 45: March/April 1993 Where did the oyster fisherman learn the intricacies of this business? The techniques of handling oysters and the areas in which they are planted were learned from his ancestors and through experience. The knowledge of the oyster in relationship to predators and environment was probably passed down from generation to generation in folklore and semi-scientific writings. The scientific literature of biology will show an account of the discovery of the details of the biology of the oyster and its enemies and diseases. As in any field of science, the literature is a compilation of experiments described in detail, with results presented. This prevents duplication of effort and allows one generation of scientists to use the knowledge of preceding generations that have gone before him. This then is the building blocks of all our knowledge. In early civilizations, the philosophers studied the natural phenomena just for the sake ofunlocking nature's secrets. Today this is termed basic research, as compared to ap plied research which is the study of some particular phase of science with an immediate application to man's use. The story of the basic research on the oyster is the story of progress in the cultivation of the oyster, and shows the value of basic knowledge to soci ety. Surveys by scientists have proven that regardless of what sportsmen may do, few doves live more than a year anyway and the hunter is responsible for less than 20 per cent of the annual dove mortality. These facts have been brought out by a cooperative dove study made by ten southern states and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife service. The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries com mission's pittman-robertson section, which is headed by John D. Newsom, coordinator, conducted the study in Louisi ana. The vast majority of doves are lost -to natural mortality which includes such things as starvation, mortality caused by adverse weather conditions, predation and disease. Few of the natural deaths of these birds are as quick and clean as death by the gun of the sportsman, Newsom says. The mourning dove, the commonest dove in Louisiana, is a game bird in this state and throughout the south; in other parts of the country it is classed as a songbird. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 21: January-February 1969 There are many former roads such as this one that were inundated when the reservoir filled up. They now serve as excellent boat launching ramps and are heavily utilized by fishermen and boating fans. In an effort to create a better predator-prey relationship and fill an existing niche in Toledo Bend, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commis sion stocked walleye fingerlings in the spring of 1967. This stocking was followed by re leasing walleye fry in May, 1968. Walleye are excellent game fish which can attain a size up to fifteen pounds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 1: July-August, 1949 Nature is very partial in the bestowal of her gifts, but when she came to dis tribute her gifts to Louisiana, she seems to have been especially partial. Here rhe left most of her treasures in abundance. Thus Louisiana, because of her geographical position and her abundance of wild life (fish and game) is a region of unique importance in the conservation pattern of the entire United States. Preeminently a state of twelve-month outdoor life each year where it has become the general custom to enjoy the benefits of the woods and the waters all year round, this state has become of great importance in conserva tion, not only to the South, but to the entire nation. Thus, the problem of preserving for posterity the game and fish of this state has not only become a critical need, but a pattern for other states to follow. For the most part the people of Louisiana appreciate the value and necessity of conservation, but there must be more than just an appreciation to assure the future and safety of our natural resources for future generations. We take great pride in our boys and girls, but what are we doing to guarantee that when they grow to men and women, they will have the same God-given privileges of fishing and hunting that we now enjoy. What a crime against nature we abet, when we ignore the threat that future generations face the possibility of being able to see a quail, a wild turkey, a deer or a duck only in a museum. Earnest men, with unselfish purpose and concerned only with the public good, will aid in every way they can to assure conservation of our wild life. Sportsmen throughout the state Will assist in our enforcement of conservation laws and our efforts to educate the people of Louisiana to the great need for preservation of our wild life resources. The creature was, of course, man, and two attributes were his ability to think and also two thumbs. But for these thumbs man might have been destroyed long ago by larger animals and naturally that goes vice versa for his ability to think. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 15: January-February, 1963 It is gratifying to me to note that in the past year there has been an obvious interest in grass roots conservation education and more public interest in the wildlife and fisheries resources of the state, their management, utilization, and perpetuation. This is not a sudden awakening on the part of the people of Louisiana. On the contrary, this growing interest can be interpreted as the result of a progressive campaign by the Louisiana Wild Life and Fisheries Commission to bring about an interest on the part of all the people in the state in these natural resources which mean so much to so many people. In making our plans for the months ahead, it would further the good which has already been accomplished for us to redouble our efforts so that this growing interest in Louisiana's wildlife and fisheries resources will be-passed along from person to person.
