Download or read book A History of Louisiana (Classic Reprint) written by Grace King and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Louisiana Every effort has been made to secure accuracy of detail; but as some errors may have crept in, the authors will be glad to receive notice of any that meet the eye of the critic. If a subsequent edition is demanded, the authors expect to enrich their work with further illustrations. Especially do they hope to obtain portraits of all the State governors - a task which it has been found impossible to accomplish in time for this edition. It may be added that all the artistic and mechanical portion of the work was done in New Orleans - the book is entirely a home product. The authors desire to thank the librarians of the Fisk, the Howard, and the State Libraries for uniform courtesy and kindness in putting at their disposal the rich historical treasures from which the materials of this work are drawn. Book Synopsis The Story of Louisiana (Classic Reprint) by : Maurice Thompson
Download or read book The Story of Louisiana (Classic Reprint) written by Maurice Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Louisiana Such a story is not to be well told by him who runs as he tells it. Easy reading for an ease-loving public is prepared at the expense of untiring labor, even when genius drives the pen and fiction is the product most desired; much more is it a work of toil when the mere uninspired compiler of events is expected to link and group dry facts in a way that will insure the most truthful and at the same time the most picturesque impression of the history involved. The novelist may, nay, he must, take liberties with truth. The historian has no alternative; he must follow the current of his subject from fact to fact and take things just as they present themselves. This Procrustean de mand of truth presents to the writer a limitation singularly inimical to unity of effect and peculiarly deadly to dramatic directness of presentation, especially when the history in hand is to be so brief as to enforce the utmost economy of phrasing. The relations and experiences of real men and women rarely fall in Such symmetrical order as to make an artistic Whole. Until they have had such treatment as we give stone in the quarry or gems in the rough they seldom group themselves with that harmony Of values and brilliant unity of interest that result when art comes in - not SO much to transcend nature as to make nature transcend herself. He was playing carelessly, and had lost four games, a thing that had never happened before, for whether it was that Monsieur Landry was the better player, or whether it was that Father Martain was too considerate to beat him, he invariably won. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quadroon, or a Lover's Adventures in Louisiana It will scarcely be necessary to say that the names and some of the places mentioned in this book are fictitious. Some of the scenes, and many of the characters that figure in these pages are real, and there are those living who will recognise them. The book is founded upon actual experience. It was written many years ago, and would have been then published, but for the interference of a well-known work, which treated of similar scenes and subjects. That work appeared just as the quadroon was about to be put to press; and the author of the latter, not willing to risk the chances of being considered an imitator, had determined on keeping the quadroon from the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lafitte of Louisiana Of Jean Lafitte's career, it may be said, from what is known of it and by reason of the inferences to be drawn from established facts, that it was one of adventure and peril comparing well with those of the men who, in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, sought wealth and fame in the new world. As to the man himself, he was, by nature and education, infinitely superior to these others. True to his ancestry and to himself, he was actuated by high motives and loyal instincts, and rendered invaluable services to the country in which he passed a short period of his eventful life. Book Synopsis Sketches, Historical and Descriptive, of Louisiana (Classic Reprint) by : Amos Stoddard
Download or read book Sketches, Historical and Descriptive, of Louisiana (Classic Reprint) written by Amos Stoddard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches, Historical and Descriptive, of Louisiana No wonder then that Louisiana at the time of the cession, was so little known to the United States. They had suddenly and unexpectedly acquired a territory of which they knew not the extent; they were equally unacquainted with its climates, soils and productions, the magnitude and impor tance of its numerous rivers, and its commercial and other natural advantages. I therefore indulge the expectation, that the subsequent sketches, however inaccurate or errone ous, will not prove wholly unacceptable to the public; par ticularly as no one before me, to my knowledge, has at: tempted an history and description of this territory. Historians have but partially noticed that country; none of their works seem to embrace, in regular detail, any con siderable number of years they are extremely barren of events, and unfortunately contain many chasms. These are in part supplied from some ancient manuscriptjournals, and other documents, to which I gained access; yet it is to be regretted that materials are still wanting to exhibit even the prominent historical features of Louisiana. The writings of missionaries at least those I have seen, and the accounts pub-3 lished by Friench officers who were employed in the coun try during part of the two last centuries, are mostly of an uninteresting nature. I am, however, much indebted to both dead and living authors; and ifi have been less solicitous to acknowledge my obligations to them, than to collect and arrange the substance of their labors, it was because I relucted at marginal and other references.
