Book excerpt: Louis Philippe I (6 October 1773 - 26 August 1850) was King of the French from 1830 to 1848. His father Louis Philippe II, Duke of Orléans had taken the name "Philippe Égalité" because he initially supported the French Revolution. However, following the deposition and execution of his cousin King Louis XVI, Louis Philippe fled the country. His father denounced his actions and voted for his death, but was imprisoned and executed that same year. Louis Philippe spent the next 21 years in exile before returning during the Bourbon Restoration. He was proclaimed king in 1830 after his cousin Charles X was forced to abdicate by the July Revolution. The reign of Louis Philippe is known as the July Monarchy and was dominated by wealthy industrialists and bankers. He followed conservative policies, especially under the influence of French statesman François Guizot during the period 1840-48. He also promoted friendship with Britain and sponsored colonial expansion, notably the French conquest of Algeria. His popularity faded as economic conditions in France deteriorated in 1847, and he was forced to abdicate after the outbreak of the French Revolution of 1848. He lived out his life in exile in the United Kingdom. His supporters were known as Orléanists, as opposed to Legitimists who supported the main line of the House of Bourbon.

I have read them with the greatest interest. To them I am indebted for about all the historical knowledge I have." Considered what we would now call "young adult" literature, this collection, first published between 1848 and 1871, was designed to present a clear, distinct, connected narrative of the lives of the great figures of world history, those people who have been most influential, at least as American pastor and historian JOHN STEVENS CABOT ABBOTT (1805-1877) saw it from his 19th-century perspective. Wildly popular and republished many times under different collected names, this replica set mimics the 1904 reprint known as the "Makers of History" series. It will delight students of history as well as show the scholar how history telling has changed over the last few centuries. More than 30 other volumes in the series are also available from Cosimo Classics. This volume, dating from 1871, covers the last French king, Louis Philippe I (1773-1850), from the origin of the House of Orleans and the dethroning of Charles X to Louis Philippe's ascension and the ending of the monarchy.

Book excerpt: This book covers the life of Louis Philippe during the most eventful period in French history. The storms of 1789 consigned his father to the guillotine, his mother and brothers to imprisonment, and himself and his sister to poverty and exile. There are few romances more replete with pensive interest than the wanderings of Louis Philippe to escape the bloodhounds of the Revolution far away amidst the ices of Northern Europe, to the huts of the Laplanders, and again through the almost unbroken wilds of North America, taking refuge in the wigwams of the Indians, and floating with his two brothers in a boat a distance of nearly two thousand miles through the solemn solitudes of Ohio and the Mississippi from Pittsburgh to the Gulf.

GOTHAM). 177 gently, a Capuchin friar appeared at the casement, and said in Italian--" C/ie volete f"--What do you wish? "I request," replied the Duke of Orleans, "some nourishment for my companion and myself." "My good young men, we do not admit foot-passengers here, particularly of your description." "But, reverend father, we will pay whatever you demand." "No, no, that little inn there is good enough for you," added the Capuchin, pointing to a poor shed where some muleteers were partaking of alpine cheese; and closed the window. Driven from this humble asylum, the duke continued his wandering life, travelling through the country of the Grisons. He was not more fortunate at Gordona, than he had been at Saint-Gothard. His costume and his knapsack were the cause of his being denied the hospitality which he demanded. However, the weather being most inclement, and night having come on, the hostess reluctantly consented, after numerous entreaties, to give the travellers shelter, which consisted of a bed of straw spread in an out-house. Overcome by fatigue, and having no particular object in then continuing his journey, the prince accepted even this kindness with gratitude, and slept soundly until the break of day, when he was awoke by a monotonous sound of feet passing and re-passing immediately by him. As soon as he was capable of clearly discerning objects around, he discovered, to his utter astonishment a young man with a gun, on guard beside him. Enquiring from him the cause of this extraordinary precaution--" It was my aunt," replied the peasant, " who placed me here, with instructions to kill you if you attempted to rob us. My aunt, you must know, is a miser and mistrustful." The Duke of Orleans smiled at the vain...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louis Philippe It would be difficult to find, in all the range of the past, a man whose career has been so full of wonderful and exciting vicissitude as that of Louis Philippe. His life covers the most eventful period in French history. The storms of 1789 consigned his father to tho guillotine, his mother and brothers to imprisonment, and himself and sister to poverty and exile. There are few romances more replete with pensive interest than the wanderings of Louis Philippe to escape the bloodhounds of the Revolution far away amidst the ices of Northern Europe, to the huts of the Laplanders, and again through the almost unbroken wilds of North America, taking refuge in the wigwams of the Indians, and floating with his two brothers in a boat a distance of nearly two thousand miles through the solemn solitudes of the Ohio and the Mississippi from Pittsburg to the Golf. Again we see the duke, on the recovery of a large portion of his estates, enjoying the elegant retreat at Twickenham, feted by the nobility of England, and caressed by the aristocracy of Europe. Again the kaleidoscope of changeful life is turned. The Empire falls. The Bourbons are restored. Louis Philippe returns to the palaces of his fathers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public and Private Life of Louis Philippe of Orleans, Ex-King of the French, From His Birth to the Close of His Reign Tms work was commenced shortly after the Revolution in 1848. Our original intention was to write but a few pages, the interest of which should subside when the events that called them forth had passed away. We had scarcely, however, commenced our undertaking, when we found the materials accumulate to such a degree that we resolved to enter fully into the subject, and give it all the care which its importance demands.
