In 2011, after moving to South Carolina, Paul Waring, a retired Connecticut state trooper, and his wife start their new life. Soon after moving, Paul makes a startling discovery. He discovers the remains of a long-forgotten Confederate soldier, along with several Civil War artifacts. Those artifacts include two glass bottles containing several clues he must decipher. Book excerpt: On the night of April 2/3, 1865, a train left Richmond carrying the gold and silver from the Confederate Treasury, perhaps worth $370,000, as well as $450,000 in gold and silver from a group of Richmond banks. The train roughly followed the escape route of Jefferson Davis and his cabinet - sometimes ahead of Davis, and sometimes behind. By the time the treasure cache reached Washington, Georgia, the Confederate Treasury was depleted. We'll examine in some detail what happened to the gold and silver along the way. The Richmond bank specie fared better up to that point, arriving more or less intact. But this would change radically on May 24, 1865 when Confederate parolees hijacked the Richmond bank gold as it was being shipped from Washington, GA back to Richmond. While some of that gold was recovered, there is still about $140,000 (1865 dollars) missing. This book will tell the tale of the last days of the Confederate Treasury, and the lost gold and silver of the Richmond Banks. The book contains 44 illustrations.

Will he be able to pull through this to finish the remaining predictions? Greg Hawk's memoir of a life's adventure takes a drastic turn at the end of a divorce as he listens to a gypsy lady in New Zealand predict things on the path ahead. Every obstacle on his path in life has put him on another tangent of learning and struggle, at times driving him to the edge of defeat. During these years, death seemed to be a constant companion as he witnessed it, as well as facing it personally. As a soldier, a husband, a divorcee, a partner of a successful construction business in Denver, owner of Fantasy Dive Charters in Australia, to being a treasure hunter in the mountains and desert of the Southwest, he faced many self-imposed challenges." Random Tangents is a celebration of a life well-lived, of obstacles overcome, of the triumph of spirit. And let's face it, sometimes a little luck."

Book excerpt: A well-researched and exciting tale of the flight of the Confederate Cabinet after the Southern defeat at the end of American Civil War, this book broke new ground, uncovered many new facts and was firmly established Alfred Jackson Hanna as a historical scholar. Hanna begins with General Lee’s fatal telegram and the hasty exodus of Jefferson Davis and high officials to Danville, then Greensboro and Charlotte. From there the Confederate Cabinet dispersed, and the author follows each man’s adventurous course in detail. Most of the fugitives headed for the pine barrens and scrub lands of Florida but were soon apprehended. Only John C. Breckinridge and Judah P. Benjamin successfully escaped, outwitting Federal officials and pirates along their way to Cuba. A classic work that makes for fabulous, spirited reading, Flight Into Oblivion, first published in 1938, soars once again.

Book excerpt: On April 2nd 1865, with the Confederate states in turmoil, a train carrying the separate monies of both the Confederate Treasury and the Virginia banks left Richmond. Following a hazardous flight south, the train was eventually split, allowing the bank money to return to Richmond. On May 24th, the wagon train carrying this money north was hijacked near Washington, Georgia. While some of the stolen money was recovered, much remains missing to this day. Rumors abound as to where the thieves hid their loot. Some claim it was dumped in that portion of the Savannah River, which is now part of Thurmond Lake. There have been many attempts to find it with no success although occasional claims of finding a gold bar or a few coins have been made. Others suggest the money is hidden in Crawfordville at the home of then Vice President Alexander Stephens but again no evidence has been found. Confederate Gold deftly blends fact and fiction into an historical mystery. The novel is woven around past realities and encompasses the many aspects of human strengths: loyalty, patience and fortitude offset by human frailties: greed, lust and deceit. Adventure and suspense are combined against a backdrop of real and fictional characters. In the end the novel suggests an answer to the whereabouts of that missing treasure. If it is not in the Savannah River or at the home of Vice President Alexander Stephens, it could well be where Singleton states it to be.

Book excerpt: Clay Cantrell and his partner Mac Harper are restoring a 200-year-old mansion when they uncover a dusty old journal, a Confederate captain's diary that points the way to a horde of Confederate gold coins locked in three strongboxes. Coins that today will be worth millions, if the horde can be found. The son of well-to-do parents, Clay Cantrell is not your ordinary contractor. An ex-Army Ranger who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, he has settled back into everyday civilian life in his hometown of Staunton, Virginia. He restores old houses there for a living, but can't quite shake a nagging itch for adventure. So the chance to go on a treasure hunt is a stroke of luck tailormade for Clay. The adventure takes an ominous turn though, when Clay finds himself accused of murder, before he, Mac, and a third friend start out on their treasure hunt. Lost Treasure alternates between this modern-day treasure hunt-murder mystery and flashbacks to the Confederate captain's story. The captain commands a secret Confederate supply depot, hidden deep inside a cavern in the wilds of Virginia's Allegheny Mountains. That's where the Confederates put the treasure for safekeeping in the last months of the Civil War, and where the fate of the captain's command was sealed. What really happened in that cavern 150 years ago? Who is trying to frame Clay for a murder he didn't commit? Will Clay and company find the treasure? Lost Treasure is a fast-paced, tightly plotted mystery adventure that will keep you guessing to the very end. It's the first in a planned series of Clay Cantrell mystery adventure novels by Bruce Wetterau, who is currently at work on the second book in the series, Killer Fog. Visit his website at www.brucewetterau.com, for free postings of Chapter One of Lost Treasure, and The Illustrated Civil War Chronology & Travel Planner.
