Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author of the Tradd Street novels explores a Southern family’s buried history, which will change the life of the woman who unearths it, secret by shattering secret. Two years after the death of her husband, Merritt Heyward receives unexpected news—Cal’s family home in Beaufort, South Carolina, bequeathed by his reclusive grandmother, now belongs to Merritt. In Beaufort, the secrets of Cal’s unspoken-of past reside among the pluff mud and jasmine of the ancestral Heyward home on the Bluff. This unknown legacy, now Merritt’s, will change and define her as she navigates her new life—a life complicated by the arrival of her too young stepmother and ten-year-old half brother. Soon, in this house of strangers, Merritt is forced into unraveling the Heyward family past as she faces her own fears and finds the healing she needs in the salt air of the Lowcountry.
Download or read book Sound written by Bella Bathurst and published by Greystone Books Ltd. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A moving and fascinating book about sound and what it means to be human” from the Somerset Maugham Award–winning author of The Lighthouse Stevensons (Financial Times). In this surprising and moving book, award-winning writer Bella Bathurst shares the extraordinary true story of how she lost her hearing and eventually regained it and what she learned from her twelve years of deafness. Diving into a wide-ranging exploration of silence and noise, she interviews psychologists, ear surgeons, and professors to uncover fascinating insights about the science of sound. But she also speaks with ordinary people who are deaf or have lost their hearing, including musicians, war veterans, and factory workers, to offer a perceptive, thought-provoking look at what sound means to us. If sight gives us the world, then hearing—or our ability to listen—gives us our connections with other people. But, as this smart, funny, and profoundly honest examination reveals, our relationship with sound is both more personal and far more complex than we might expect. “Bathurst is a restless, curious writer . . . After reading this book, I found myself listening in a richer and more interested way.” —The Guardian “A hymn to the faculty of hearing by someone who had it, lost it and then found it again, written with passion and intelligence . . . terrifying, absorbing and ultimately uplifting.” —Literary Review “Bathurst’s affecting memoir will enlighten and educate.” —Publishers Weekly “A memoir of hearing loss and what the author learned . . . through her unexpected recovery from it. A good writer knows material when it presents itself, and Bathurst is a very good writer.” —Kirkus Reviews

Download or read book The Lost Words written by and published by Edition Peters. This book was released on 2022-05 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lost Words by composer James Burton takes its inspiration and text from the award-winning 'cultural phenomenon' and book of the same name by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris: a book that was, in turn, a creative response to the removal of everyday nature words like acorn, newt and otter from a new edition of a widely used children's dictionary. Both the book and Burton's 32-minute work, which is written in 12 short movements for upper-voice choir in up to 3 voice parts (with either orchestral or piano accompaniment), celebrates each lost word with a beautiful poem or 'spell', magically brought to life in Burton's music. At its heart, the work delivers a powerful message about the need to close the gap between childhood and the natural world. Burton's piece was co-commissioned by the Hallé Concerts Society for the Hallé Children's Choir and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The piano accompaniment version was premiered at the Tanglewood Festival in 2019 by the Boston Symphony Children's Choir, of which Burton is founder and director. The Hallé Children's Choir will premiere the orchestral version of the full work in Manchester, UK, post-pandemic. Vocal Score Co-commission by Boston Symphony and Hallé Concerts Society for their respective Children's Choirs. Two versions - with orchestral or with piano accompaniment. The vocal score is the same for both versions. James Burton is a composer but also a conductor. He is conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and choral director of the Boston Symphony. The book The Lost Words, exquisitely designed, has won multiple awards and is an international best-seller. The vocal score includes Jackie Morris's beautiful imagery in its cover design.
Download or read book Lost Sound written by Jeff Porter and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2016-03-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Archibald MacLeish to David Sedaris, radio storytelling has long borrowed from the world of literature, yet the narrative radio work of well-known writers and others is a story that has not been told before. And when the literary aspects of specific programs such as The War of the Worlds or Sorry, Wrong Number were considered, scrutiny was superficial. In Lost Sound, Jeff Porter examines the vital interplay between acoustic techniques and modernist practices in the growth of radio. Concentrating on the 1930s through the 1970s, but also speaking to the rising popularity of today's narrative broadcasts such as This American Life, Radiolab, Serial, and The Organist, Porter's close readings of key radio programs show how writers adapted literary techniques to an acoustic medium with great effect. Addressing avant-garde sound poetry and experimental literature on the air, alongside industry policy and network economics, Porter identifies the ways radio challenged the conventional distinctions between highbrow and lowbrow cultural content to produce a dynamic popular culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRILOGY BOOK TWO includes three books from my numerous writings. Writing and philosophizing for so long now, I am pleased to get to do this while others simply cant take the time. In my journeys, I dont know if I am getting closer to knowing anything, and it seems the more I know, the more I know I dont know. I suppose all we can be sure of, is that as long as we are alive, we have the opportunity to keep searching, while continuing to delve into our minds and hearts for clues to greater meaning and purpose on earth. How long have you been standing here, God? is the title of the book, and it comes to you along with two others, Evolution: Facts and Fairy Tales and Amistad (Spanish for friendship). All three were written with you (the reader and fellow life-mate) especially in mind. If you struggle with your personal spirituality, and need greater awareness that God is on all sides of you, then maybe How long have you been standing here, God? (Book One) will be helpful. If you are wondering about your origins, trying to figure out how it all came about, then perhaps Evolution: Facts and Fairy Tales (Book Two) will make things even more confusing! During my time in Central America, I have learned plenty about the concept of friendship, and I mean that in the context of the whole of life. Amistad (Book Three) is a book about befriending the people, places and things that make up our lives.
