This is the inside story of the spectacular rise of easyJet. Did the airline really buy its uniforms from a Benetton store? What was secretly stashed in the toilets at easyLand? Why was Aberdeen airport littered with half-bottles of cheap whisky? The answers to these questions and more are contained in this blow-by-blow account of how an orange start-up began its journey to becoming one of the world's most successful airlines.

Book excerpt: The last decade or so has seen major changes in the European airline industry. As regulation has loosened, the number of carriers active across the continent has greatly increased. In a marketplace previously dominated by a relatively small number of national flag carriers, many new operators have sprung up. Newly independent countries all have their own airlines, and a complete new sector has been added to the marketplace with the phenomenal rise, and occasional falls, of budget airlines across the continent. This book reflects these many changes. It provides a photographic record of primarily passenger-carrying airlines from 32 different European countries. Starting in Ireland on the west of the continent and continuing in a broadly easterly direction, the book explores the airlines which are based in each country. This grand tour of European civil aviation is conducted with color photographs accompanied by extended, detailed captions. The book is strong on the ever-changing image of the airlines and their passion for new and modified liveries, which can be confusing for those interested in the subject. The up-to-date coverage of current liveries will be of particular value to aviation modelers. With the decline in the number of new military aircraft entering service since the end of the Cold War, many aviation enthusiasts have renewed their interest in the world of civil aviation. There is also a broader public interest in the sector as more and more of us use airlines more regularly. This book provides a good general survey of the airlines and airliners presently operating in Europe. It will be an attractive and colorful book, which will attract a wider distribution and sale than many of the more specialist military and historical aviation titles on the market.

Book excerpt: According to Aulus Gellius, Archytas, the Ancient Greek philosopher, mathematician, astronomer, statesman, and strategist, was reputed to have designed and built, around 400 BC, the first artificial, self-propelled flying device, a bird-shaped model propelled by a jet of what was probably steam, said to have actually flown some 200 metres. This machine, which its inventor called The Pigeon, may have been suspended on a wire or pivot for its flight. The 9th century Muslim Berber inventor, Abbas Ibn Firnas's glider is considered by John Harding to be the first attempt at heavier-than-air flight in aviation history. In 1010 AD an English monk, Eilmer of Malmesbury purportedly piloted a primitive gliding craft from the tower of Malmesbury Abbey. Eilmer was said to have flown over 200 yards (180 m) before landing, breaking both his legs. He later remarked that the only reason he did not fly further was because he forgot to give it a tail, and he was about to add one when his concerned Abbot forbade him any further experiments. Bartolomeu de Gusmão, Brazil and Portugal, an experimenter with early airship designs. In 1709 demonstrated a small airship model before the Portuguese court, but never succeeded with a full-scale model. Pilâtre de Rozier, Paris, France, first trip by a human in a free-flying balloon (the Montgolfière), built by Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier, . 9 km covered in 25 minutes on October 15, 1783. (see Le Globe below for first unmanned flight, 2 months earlier) Professor Jacques Charles and Les Frères Robert, two French brothers, Anne-Jean and Nicolas-Louis, variously shared three milestones of pioneering flight: Le Globe, the first unmanned hydrogen gas balloon flew on 26 August 1783. On 1 December 1783 La Charlière piloted by Jacques Charles and Nicolas-Louis Robert made the first manned hydrogen balloon flight. In 1951, the Lockheed XFV-1 and the Convair XFY tailsitters were both designed around the Allison YT40 turboprop engine drivin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's impossible to tell the story of Court Line without telling that of Autair, founded by helicopter pioneer William 'Bill' Armstrong. Autair itself was an offshoot of his global helicopter operation, but Bill also had his finger in many aviation 'pies' including a multitude of operations in Africa, where so many aircraft and airlines were created, bought and sold with such prolificacy that even he could not remember the names and how many there were! There is also the background to Court Line's shipping concerns and the Caribbean operations of the hotel chains and regional airline Leeward Islands Air Transport which Court owned for a while.Covered in detail is the introduction, demonstration and use of the Lockheed TriStar wide-bodied airliner, the first of the type used in the Inclusive Tour business.Court Line Aviation and Tom Gullick's Clarksons Holidays brought to the forefront the concept of value-for-money Inclusive Tour holidays following the 'vertical integration' business model whereby owning and controlling each step of the holiday allowed the company to make a small profit at every stage. The orange, pink, turquoise and yellow jets brought flashes of color to dreary British airports, and quickly streamed a multi-colored rainbow across European skies to Mediterranean destinations and even further afield. Truly they did indeed put colors in the Sky!

Book excerpt: When the first commercial flights took off in the 1930s, stewardesses were registered nurses whose duties included swatting flies and helping passengers read railroad timetables in the event of forced landings. In the 1950s, stewardesses were viewed as wives-in-training, as adept at preparing a baby's bottle as mixing a martini. By the swinging ' 60s and ' 70s, female flight attendants were considered successful marketing tools, sporting microminis, hot pants, and buttons that read "Pure, Sober, and Available" to lure male business passengers on board. "Come Fly with Us!" explores the unique history of this industry pioneered by women, tracing changes in the flight attendant's role -- from flying nurse to airborne sex kitten to today's custodian of safety and service. Stunning visuals from airline archives and early flight maps, promotional brochures, and print advertisements re-create a sense of the early days and underscore the dramatic changes that have occurred in this dynamic industry.

Book excerpt: A timely, intriguing collection of the overlooked stories of Victoria’s pioneers, trailblazers, and community builders who were also diverse people of colour. Often described as “more English than the English,” the city of Victoria has a much more ethnically diverse background than historical record and current literature reveal. Significant contributions were made by many people of colour with fascinating stories, including: the Kanaka, or Hawaiian Islanders, who constructed Fort Victoria, and members of the Kanaka community such as Maria Mahoi and William Naukana three Metis matriarchs—Amelia Connolly Douglas, Josette Legacé Work, and Isabelle M. Mainville Ross the Victoria Voltigeurs, the earliest police presence in the Colony of Vancouver Island, and who were primarily men of colour Grafton Tyler Brown, now known in the United States as one of the first and best African American artists of the American West Manzo Nagano, Canada’s first recorded immigrant from Japan and many more With information about various cultural communities in early Victoria and significant dates, May Wong’s City in Colour is a collection of fascinating stories of unsung characters whose stories are at the heart of Victoria’s history.
