Book Synopsis News from the Epicentre by : Gennaro Varriale
Download or read book News from the Epicentre written by Gennaro Varriale and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-11-04 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades historians argued for the downfall of communication, when early modern societies were hit by a natural disaster. After all, earthquakes caused the destruction of infrastructure, which hindered the spread of news. Instead, the last investigations opened a new point of view about the political communication: every crisis was a catalyst for news. The book widens this reading through a comparative analysis of several earthquakes in the Hispanic Monarchy territories, from Asia to America. However, the examination of communications provided in this volume is not an end in itself but is offered as a basis for reflection and to propose the notion that earthquakes trigger change in social and political dynamics. Earthquake-related crises exposed the underlying contradictions that the court of Madrid needed to address in the most effective way, and, if possible, swiftly. Earthquakes not only destroyed buildings and infrastructure but also social norms. Urgency reduced the distance between interlocutors, to some extent blurring the boundaries of self-censorship. Tremors therefore offer a rare opportunity to observe the political and military crises faced by the Hispanic Monarchy, the global empire of the time.

Book Synopsis Cohesión social en Europa y las Américas by : Harlan Koff
Download or read book Cohesión social en Europa y las Américas written by Harlan Koff and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis The Gendered Terrain of Disaster by : Elaine Pitt Enarson
Download or read book The Gendered Terrain of Disaster written by Elaine Pitt Enarson and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1998-06-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender is revealed as a central organizing principle in social life when the unexpected transforms daily routines, environments, and social institutions. Using specific disaster experiences from around the world, this book argues for a gendered perspective in policy, practice and research. Contributing authors challenge the image of women as hapless victim in their accounts of women who rebuilt flooded homes in Bangladesh, evacuated families from Australian bushfires, reconstructed communities after a Mexican earthquake, and mobilized women in Miami in the wake of Hurricane Andrew. From Bangladesh to Scotland, the case studies document the root causes of women's vulnerability to disaster and the central roles they play before, during and after disaster. The authors recommend strategies for policy makers and emergency practitioners to more fully engage women in disaster planning and response.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume celebrates the continuing impact of the most notable contributions from The Basin of Mexico: The Ecological Processes in the Evolution of a Civilization by William T. Sanders, Jeffrey R. Parsons, and Robert S. Santley. In 1979, this influential work synthesized the results of the Basin of Mexico survey projects and follow-up excavations at several sites, while providing theoretical and methodological lines of research in central Mexico and generally in Mesoamerica. More than four decades after that book’s publication, the fourteen contributions in this volume review and analyze its theoretical and methodological influence in light of recent research across disciplines. Among a spectrum of authors representing several generations are those who participated directly in the Basin of Mexico surveys—including the late Jeffrey R. Parsons—as well as those who have been actively working on recent projects in the basin and neighboring regions. Providing a broad and multidisciplinary perspective of the present and future state of research in the area, The Legacies of The Basin of Mexico will be of interest to Mesoamerican and Latin American archaeologists as well as geographers, geologists, historians, and specialists in the study of past environments. Contributors: Guillermo Acosta Ochoa, Aleksander Borejsza, Destiny Crider, Charles Frederick, Raúl García-Chávez, Larry Gorenflo, Angela Huster, Georgina Ibarra Arzave, Charles Kolb, Frank Lehmkuhl, Abigail Meza Peñaloza, Emily McClung de Tapia, John K. Book Synopsis Metabolismo Cultural Como Estrategia para Preservar la Identidad Cultural y EcolÓGica by : Reinhard Senkowski
Download or read book Metabolismo Cultural Como Estrategia para Preservar la Identidad Cultural y EcolÓGica written by Reinhard Senkowski and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Managing Disaster by : Louise Kloos Comfort
Download or read book Managing Disaster written by Louise Kloos Comfort and published by Durham : Duke University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects an important shift in society's definition of disaster. For centuries catastrophic events have been considered "acts of God" and therefore uncontrollable by definition. Managing Disaster is international in scope, covering such natural and man-made calamities as tornadoes in western Pennsylvania, earthquakes in Peru, flooding in the Netherlands, and toxic waste disasters. Centers for hazard studies have only recently examined the interrelated aspects of disastrous events and recognized the interaction between natural hazards and human systems. As society attempts to acquire the information and develop the skills to reduce the risks and damage from disaster, an increasingly professional public service is reconsidering its strategies and policy direction. Managing Disaster addresses this problem and the need for a new approach to teaching this subject at the university level. Twenty-three professionals and scholars in public policy and administration--rom universities, government, and the private sector--examine the basic issues confronting managers and public agencies in the face of disaster.
