Nevertheless, the majority of students and even Latin American literary specialists, remain uninformed about this significant body of writing. This Dictionary is the first comprehensive bibliographical and critical source book on Latin American Jewish literature. It represents the research efforts of 50 scholars from the United States, Latin America, and Israel who are dedicated to the advancement of Latin American Jewish studies. An introduction by the editor is followed by entries on 118 authors that provide both biographical information and a critical summary of works. Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico-home to the largest Jewish communities in Latin America-are the countries with the greatest representation, but there are essays on writers from Venezuela, Chile, Uruguay, Peru, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Cuba.

Book Synopsis Jewish Literatures in Spanish and Portuguese by : Ruth Fine
Download or read book Jewish Literatures in Spanish and Portuguese written by Ruth Fine and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a thorough introduction to Jewish world literatures in Spanish and Portuguese, which not only addresses the coexistence of cultures, but also the functions of a literary and linguistic space of negotiation in this context. From the Middle Ages to present day, the compendium explores the main Jewish chapters within Spanish- and Portuguese-language world literature, whether from Europe, Latin America, or other parts of the world. No comprehensive survey of this area has been undertaken so far. Yet only a broad focus of this kind can show how diasporic Jewish literatures have been (and are ) – while closely tied to their own traditions – deeply intertwined with local and global literary developments; and how the aesthetic praxis they introduced played a decisive, formative role in the history of literature. With this epistemic claim, the volume aims at steering clear of isolationist approaches to Jewish literatures.

Book Synopsis Holocaust Consciousness and Cold War Violence in Latin America by : Estelle Tarica
Download or read book Holocaust Consciousness and Cold War Violence in Latin America written by Estelle Tarica and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes the existence of a recognizably distinct Holocaust consciousness in Latin America since the 1970s. Community leaders, intellectuals, writers, and political activists facing state repression have seen themselves reflected in Holocaust histories and have used Holocaust terms to describe human rights atrocities in their own countries. In so doing, they have developed a unique, controversial approach to the memory of the Holocaust that is little known outside the region. Estelle Tarica deepens our understanding of Holocaust awareness in a global context by examining diverse Jewish and non-Jewish voices, focusing on Argentina, Mexico, and Guatemala. What happens, she asks, when we find the Holocaust invoked in unexpected places and in relation to other events, such as the Argentine "Dirty War" or the Mayan genocide in Guatemala? The book draws on meticulous research in two areas that have rarely been brought into contact—Holocaust Studies and Latin American Studies—and aims to illuminate the topic for readers who may be new to the fields.

Book excerpt: A historical analysis of the Argentinian Jewish community of Buenos Aires from its origins until 1930. Describes the first evidence of antisemitism expressed in the local press in 1881 against Jewish immigration from Russia. Some anti-Jewish stereotypes were incorporated by writers (e.g. in Julián Martel's novel "La bolsa", 1891). Later, as a consequence of actions and strikes carried out by the labor movements, especially by anarchists and socialists, a campaign was launched against foreigners. An attempt was made to control the curricula of Jewish schools. Jews were identified with subversion and radical tendencies such as anarchism. Discusses the "Semana Trágica" (January 1919), the first pogrom in Argentina.
Book Synopsis Argentine Jews or Jewish Argentines? by : Raanan Rein
Download or read book Argentine Jews or Jewish Argentines? written by Raanan Rein and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-01-25 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays gathered here challenge essentialist concepts and overemphasis on Jewish particularity, as well as the common discourse of Jewish victimology. At the same time, they reveal how the Jews, like other ethnic groups, are not monolithic but fragmented by place of origin, social class, political ideologies, and gender. The topics discussed include the non-political Zionism espoused by Sephardic Jews during the first half of the 20th century, Argentine neutrality during World War II, the entry of Nazi war criminals to Argentina, the regime of Juan Perón and its attitudes towards Jewish-Argentines and the state of Israel, the reactions of Jews to the anti-Semitic wave in Argentina following the kidnapping of Adolf Eichman by Mossad agents, the Latin American community in Israel, and protests by Argentine exiles in Israel against the 1978 world-cup soccer games, played in Argentina during a brutal military regime. "...Argentine Jews or Jewish Argentines?: Essays on Ethnicity, Identity and Diaspora is a critical contribution encouraging more subtle approaches to studying the identities of Jewish populations in Latin America." Book Synopsis Contemporary Sephardic and Mizrahi Literature by : Dario Miccoli
Download or read book Contemporary Sephardic and Mizrahi Literature written by Dario Miccoli and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the literary texts produced by Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews who migrated from the Middle East and North Africa in the 1950s onwards, should be considered as part of a transnational arena, in which forms of Jewish diasporism and postcolonial displacement interweave. Through an original perspective that focuses on novelists, poets, professional and amateur writers, the book explains that these Sephardic and Mizrahi authors are part of a global literary diaspora at the crossroads of past Arab legacies, new national identities and persistent feelings of Jewishness.
