Desde el comienzo de la sublevación, el uso militar del ferrocarril se generalizó no sólo para el traslado de los ejércitos a lo largo del país, sino que adquirió una importancia estratégica en los procedimientos de la lucha armada. La facción que los controlaba, garantizaba su movilización, podía emprender rápidos ataques, cercar poblaciones y, en ocasiones, tomar plazas a bordo de los trenes. El dominio de las vías férreas fue determinante para los grupos en pugna. Para atacar o defenderse del enemigo, los diversos contingentes federales o revolucionarios de distintos bandos levantaban vías, descarrilaban y volaban trenes, dinamitaban puentes, incendiaban estaciones y destruían locomotoras, coches de pasajeros y carros de carga. Se destacan a lo largo de la obra los muchos e importantes actos heroicos y de sacrificio realizados por los trabajadores ferrocarrileros, quienes obligados por las circunstancias o por convicción revolucionaria, siempre cumplieron con su responsabilidad en medio de grandes peligros y en condiciones altamente desfavorables. Se relatan algunos de los pormenores de los hechos bélicos que vivieron las tripulaciones de los trenes, auditores, telegrafistas y despachadores, jefes de estación, mecánicos y peones de vía. Se utiliza como hilo conductor la historia general de la Revolución mexicana desde sus precursores hasta finales de 1929. Se incluyen los antecedentes de la construcción de la red ferroviaria en la época porfiriana, una síntesis de un siglo de historia hasta nuestros días, y una antología con fragmentos de algunas novelas, cuentos, canciones y corridos de diversos autores que vivieron o imaginaron ciertos episodios ferrocarrileros durante la lucha revolucionaria
