Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in Europe, secular nation building in Latin America challenged the traditional authority of the Roman Catholic Church in the early twentieth century. In response, Catholic social and political movements sought to contest state-led secularisation and provide an answer to the 'social question', the complex set of problems associated with urbanisation, industrialisation, and poverty. As Catholics mobilised against the secular threat, they also struggled with each other to define the proper role of the Church in the public sphere. This study utilizes recently opened files at the Vatican pertaining to Mexico's post-revolutionary Church-state conflict known as the Cristero Rebellion (1926-1929). However, looking beyond Mexico's exceptional case, the work employs a transnational framework, enabling a better understanding of the supranational relationship between Latin American Catholic activists and the Vatican. To capture this world historical context, Andes compares Mexico to Chile's own experience of religious conflict. Unlike past scholarship, which has focused almost exclusively on local conditions, Andes seeks to answer how diverse national visions of Catholicism responded to papal attempts to centralize its authority and universalize Church practices worldwide. The Politics of Transnational Catholicism applies research on the interwar papacy, which is almost exclusively European in outlook, to a Latin American context. The national cases presented illuminate how Catholicism shaped public life in Latin America as the Vatican sought to define Catholic participation in Mexican and Chilean national politics. It reveals that Catholic activism directly influenced the development of new political movements such as Christian Democracy, which remained central to political life in the region for the remainder of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: In a provocative study based on extensive original research, Karush reinterprets Argentina's first experiment with electoral democracy. By the early twentieth century, massive immigration and rapid economic growth had generated severe class conflict. In 1912, the nation's elite attempted to defuse this conflict by enacting electoral reforms designed to incorporate the working-class children of immigrants into the body politic. The book reconstructs the ensuing struggles over national identity and political representation as they played out in Rosario, then the country's second largest city. Most of Rosario's politicians saw democracy not as a means to extend representation to subordinate social groups but as a nation-building tool aimed at transforming class-conscious workers into classless citizens. Intent on preserving their own hegemony, these politicians tried unsuccessfully to banish appeals to class interests from the political marketplace. Karush draws upon a wide range of sources--including the mainstream and anarchist press, political speeches, popular literature, and tango lyrics--to show that in the voting booth and on the picket line workers selectively appropriated and manipulated the various identities made available by politicians and popular culture. In charting the course of Rosario's political history, this book also offers a new perspective on both the collapse of Argentine democracy in 1930 and the rise of Peronism in 1945.

Book excerpt: Provides a new understanding of the relationship between Church and State in 20th-century Costa Rica. Understanding the relationship between religion and social justice in Costa Rica involves piecing together the complex interrelationships between Church and State — between priests, popes, politics, and the people. This book does just that. Dana Sawchuk chronicles the fortunes of the country’s two competing forms of labour organizations during the 1980s and demonstrates how different factions within the Church came to support either the union movement or Costa Rica’s home-grown Solidarity movement. Challenging the conventional understanding of Costa Rica as a wholly peaceful and prosperous nation, and traditional interpretations of Catholic Social Teaching, this book introduces readers to a Church largely unknown outside Costa Rica. Sawchuk has carefully analyzed material from a multitude of sources — interviews, newspapers, books, and articles, as well as official Church documents, editorials, and statements by Church representativesto provide a firmly rooted socio-economic history of the experiences of workers, and the Catholic Church’s responses to workers in Costa Rica.
