They exiled Cosimo to Venetian territory along with Lorenzo and a few chiefs of the defeated party. Cosimo bore the blow philosophically. After all, the lot of the vanquished was usually more severe. He still had his health, his money and - what the Albizzi did not realize - his popularity in Flor/ ence. Venice was a pleasant place. The aristocrats of the islands were pleased to honor him, for they were shrewd and knew that the exiled Florentine of today might be the ruler of tomorrow. Cosimo knew it too and kept up a voluminous correspondence with friends at home. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Lorenzo De' Medici, Called the Magnificent From this full blaze of talents, the author has turned towards a period, when its first faint gleams afford a subject, if not more interesting, at least more suited to his powers; when, after a night of unexpected darkness, Florence again saw the sun break forth with a lustre more permanent, though perhaps not so bright. The days of Dante, of Boc caccio, and of Petrarca, were indeed past; but under the auspices of the House of Medici, and particularly through the ardour and example of Lorenzo, the empire of science and true taste was again restored. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lorenzo De' Medici: And Florence in the Fifteenth Century It might be urged with much apparent reason that Florence is no nation, and Lorenzo de' Medici no hero. He was no slayer of men in a national cause; only once did he draw his sword and then he failed to strike. No people owed to him its freedom, for he completed the subjugation of the Florentine republic. He added but slightly to the state's territories, he bequeathed to it no one important building. Nevertheless in the most interesting century of Italian history Florence was the most typical state, and Lorenzo the most typical citizen. Had Henry VII. of England or Louis XI. of France been asked who was the most remarkable man in Italy, they would have named Lorenzo, and this must be the justification for his inclusion in this series. No biography of Lorenzo will ever be definitive, for the questions in dispute are rather of feeling than of fact. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations, Historical and Critical of the Life of Lorenzo De Medici, Called the Magnificent: With an Appendix of Original and Other Documents Not long after the publication of my work, I received, through the obliging attention of the late earl of Bristol, bishop of Derry, then in Italy, a copy in manuscript of a professed crio' fique on the Life of Lorenzo, the production of a learned foreigner, who appeared to be well acquainted with the subject, and fully compoa tent, to judge of the various topics there dist cussed. Although this piece was sent me with out the name of the author, I did not long re; main in doubt on that head, another copy having been obligingly transmitted to me by Francis Drake, Esq., with the information that it was the production of the late Abate Andres, who, although he was a native of Spain, is well known by his proficiency in Italian literature, and par ticularly as the author of the extensive work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Florence: And of the Affairs of Italy; From the Earliest Times to the Death of Lorenzo the Magnificent Together With the Prince and Various Historical Tracts Niccolo Machiavelli, the first great Italian historian, and one of the most eminent political writers of any age or country, was born at Florence, May 3, 1469. He was of an old though not wealthy Tuscan family, his father, who was a jurist, dying when Niccolo was sixteen years old. We know nothing of Machiavelli is youth and little about his studies. He does not seem to have received the usual humanistic education of his time, as he knew no Greek. The first notice of Machiavelli is in 1498 when we find him holding the office of Secretary in the second Chancery of the Signoria, which office he retained till the downfall of the Florentine Republic in 1512. His unusual ability was soon recognized, and in 1500 he was sent on a mission to Louis XII. of France, and afterward on an embassy to Caesar Borgia, the lord of Romagna, at Urbino. Machiavelli's report and description of this and subsequent embassies to this prince, shows his undisguised admiration for the courage and cunning of Caesar, who was a master in the application of the principles afterward exposed in such a skillful and uncompromising manner by Machiavelli in his "Prince." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Florence It is needless to say that the number of books, oldand new, is very considerable indeed, to which anyone venturing in these days to write yet another book on Florence must have had recourse, and to whose authors he is bound to be indebted - from the earliest Florentine chroniclers down to the most recent bio graphers of Lorenzo the Magnificent, of Savonarola, of Michelangelo - from Vasari down to our modern scientific art critics - from Richa and Moreni down to the Misses Homer. My obligations can hardly be acknowledged here in detail; but, to mention a few modern works alone, I am most largely indebted to Capponi's Storia della Repnboliea di Firenze, to various writings of Professor Pasquale Villari, and to Mr Arm strong's Lorenzo de' Medici to the works of Ruskin and J. A. Symonds, of M. Reymond and Mr Berenson; and, \in the domains of topography, to Baedeker's Hand Boo'. In judging of the merits and the authorship of individual pictures and statues, I have usually given more weight to the results of modern criticism than to the pleasantness of old tradition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lorenzo the Magnificent and Florence in Her Golden Age This book has been written for those who will read it whoever they may be, though the writer is not without hope that serious students of the Italian Renaissance will find it - or parts of it - not wholly unworthy of their attention. I am well aware that there are works of great excellence upon Lorenzo dei Medici already open to the English reader. None the less I will venture to make an effort to justify the appearance of another. Of existing works in English there are three which may claim to be classics - Mr. Roscoe's life of Lorenzo dei Medici; the English translation of Baron von Reumont's elaborate study; and Mr. Armstrong's monograph. Roscoe's book, written nearly a century ago, can never be entirely superseded. It retains, moreover, among its many excellences, the prestige attaching to the work of a pioneer. But in the course of a century much fresh light has been thrown on Lorenzo's work and character. Baron von Reumont, therefore, supplied a pressing need by the publication of his volumes, based on most minute, careful and conscientious researches. Almost every available document and source was ransacked by Von Reumont to provide material for his book, and, since his researches were completed, comparatively little that is fresh has come to light. But it must be confessed that the English translation of Von Reumont's Lorenzo is - to put it frankly - unreadable. However much it may be a treasure to the student, to the general reader it is a terror. It is full of inaccuracies and almost wholly lacking in style. They were conscious of him though they avoided looking at him and he was totally unconscious of them and looked upon the sea. They had a grievance against him of which they never spoke but which formed a perfectly understood background for all their comments. It was that the Maestro was seeking a genius and they were one and all aware that they could not play the part. Yet no one of them deplored his own lack of qualifications for it half so much as he resented the Maestro's frank betrayal of his knowledge of it. It resulted in their having fits and starts of working like tigers that some day they might turn and rend him with their success. In this hope, they rent many innocent pieces of canvas but never punctured the Maestro's absorption in his quest with any sharp suspicion of his mistake.
