Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God really want children to be spanked? Where did spanking come from? How can I discipline my children in a manner that is truly pleasing to God? In Gentle Firmness, Stephanie G. Cox answers all of these questions and more. Take this fascinating journey to learn how to accurately read and interpret the "rod" verses of Proverbs. See why spanking is more of a church doctrine rather than a biblical principle. Read many stories from actual people raised in Christian homes that were "lovingly" spanked and yet were emotionally scarred. And finally, discover how ALL children can be effectively disciplined in a biblical manner without being hurt. Stephanie G. Cox, M.S.Ed is severely physically disabled with cerebral palsy. She is an amazing overcomer, as evidenced by the fact that she typed the entire book the way she always types...with her nose!

Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller: A priest struggles against the Vietnam War—and his own passions—in “a classic page-turner” (Chicago Tribune). Vietnam was bitterly contested not only on the battlefields of Southeast Asia but on the American home front. This novel filled with “probing psychological detail” follows Michael Maguire—a Catholic priest, Korean War hero, and former POW—who risks everything as he fights to be true to his heart and his conscience during the tumult of the era (The Washington Post). From the author of The Cloister, Prince of Peace is a thrilling saga of faith, truth, and honor, “so rich and vital it leaves you breathless” (Chicago Tribune).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus gives himself to us in the Eucharist because he loves us. When we receive him in the Blessed Sacrament — body, blood, soul, and divinity — we are united to the humanity and divinity of Christ. Every Day with Jesus is an invitation to reflect on how our encounter with the Real Presence can truly transform our lives in so many ways. This daily devotional is divided into twelve months, with each month highlighting a specific attribute in the life of Jesus. You'll begin each day with a Scripture verse, followed by a brief reflection, a question or an act to consider, and a short prayer to Jesus in the Eucharist to carry through your day. This companion to the daily devotionals Every Day with Mary and Every Day with Saint Joseph fosters spiritual growth and transformation through a renewed personal encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a pastor, I have seen that most believers have a strong desire to hear from the Lord, but many struggle in discerning His voice. I am certain that the most direct way that God communicates with us is through Scripture, yet many who seek to hear the Lord get discouraged with Bible reading. Ironically, this is the flaw in most devotional books. Readers hear the author's thoughts, which occasionally have little connection with the verse pasted at the top of the page. What is needed is a devotional guide that gives an example of how to listen for God's voice through a structured Bible reading plan. In 2018, I was counseling with a young man who was considering abandoning the Christian faith. I asked him if he was reading the Bible daily, and he stated that he was but that he did not get much from it. I gave him a specific challenge--continue reading the Bible daily, but text me a verse or two that spoke to him directly. He agreed, and together we began sharing daily verses with each other. Over time, we began to share not only the verses but what exactly the Lord said through those verses. Within two months, this young man renewed his commitment to Christ, and within six months, he became one of our young adult Bible teachers. Chairside Chats with God was birthed from these texts where I shared what God was saying to me through my daily Bible reading. These devotionals are built around the One Year Bible reading plan, but they could easily be altered to fit with any year-long Bible-reading schedule. This devotional is not intended as a substitute for reading Scripture. It is intended to show how God will speak by listening intently for His voice in His Written Word. I am confident that God will use this guide to help any believer grow in faith as he or she walks through the Bible.

Book excerpt: The birth of Christ is not only about the coming of the Messiah to the world—it is the Incarnation. By striving to understand Christ, we can understand what it is to be a follower of Jesus. Exploring the idea of the Incarnation also helps us get a grip on why God came in human form and what our purpose is as we respond with faith in Him. That is just one of the many insights from Tom Kingery, a United Methodist pastor, in his sixth book about Christian life. Like a photo album, each Christmas message in the Bible gives us part of the whole picture. While we may not ever get the entire picture, we can see enough of it to know what we are looking at and what we’re called on to do because of it. Most of the sermons in this book were offered as a series of messages during the weeks up to and including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Kingery presents them as different parts of a “gallery” of images and impressions, encouraging you to enjoy the offerings and as you move closer to the Lord.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Kotsko goes beyond the biography of an icon to a provocative investigation of the devil’s many lives and effects in cultural and political ideologies.” —Laurel C. Schneider, author of Beyond Monotheism The most enduring challenge to traditional monotheism is the problem of evil, which attempts to reconcile three incompatible propositions: God is all-good, God is all-powerful, and evil happens. The Prince of This World traces the story of one of the most influential attempts to square this circle: the offloading of responsibility for evil onto one of God’s rebellious creatures. In this striking reexamination, the devil’s story is bitterly ironic, full of tragic reversals. He emerges as a theological symbol who helps oppressed communities cope with the trauma of unjust persecution, torture, and death at the hands of political authorities and eventually becomes a vehicle to justify oppression at the hands of Christian rulers. And he evolves alongside the biblical God, who at first presents himself as the liberator of the oppressed but ends up a cruel ruler who delights in the infliction of suffering on his friends and enemies alike. In other words, this is the story of how God becomes the devil—a devil who remains with us in our ostensibly secular age. “This diabolically gripping genealogy offers a stunning parable of western politics religious and secular. It tracks as has never been done before the dramatic shifts of the relation between God and the Devil—conflict, rivalry, game of mirrors, fusion. With the ironic wisdom of a postmodern Beatrice, Kotsko guides us through the sequence of hells that leads to our own.” —Catherine Keller, author of On the Mystery: Discerning Divinity in Process
