Download or read book Man and Running written by Vladimir M. Volkov and published by Amer Alliance for Health Physical. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to systematize and generalize the data of world literature concerning the advantages of fast walking and slow running for persons with various cardiovascular diseases. The information and the fitness program outlined are based on experience and research conducted at the Nadezha Health Club in Smolensk, Russia. Major risk factors for cardiovascular disease are discussed, as well as how development of coronary disease can be attenuated or arrested by a prolonged routine of jogging. The effects of fitness running are also outlined in relation to certain diseases and conditions: diseases of the blood vessels of the lower extremities, neurasthenia, gastro-intestinal disease, diabetes, and obesity. A section is also included on running and injuries. The risk factors discussed include: high serum cholesterol, diastolic hypertension, obesity, smoking, unfavorable heredity, insufficient motor activity, and excessive nutrition high in calories. The fundamentals of training which should be applied to fitness running focus on three principles: repetition, incremental improvement, and individualization. Instruction in the basics of fitness running as well as the stages of training vary according to the health, conditioning, and age of participants. Correct planning of weekly and monthly workouts is essential to achieve health benefits. Postexercise recovery should be worked into the routine: a pattern of alternating workouts with rest days. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained in this book were presented at a NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) held at Cape Sounion, Athens, Greece, 19-24 May, 1991. The twenty-eight more comprehensive papers represent the key subjects of the ARW covered by invited speakers. The thirty-four short papers pre sented in a research format are contributions of those invited to participate in the ARW. There was a total of 70 participants from 21 countries. The objectives of the ARW were as follows: to review current knowledge of biological control of plant diseases and plant parasitic nematodes, with emphasis on mechanisms at the molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecosystem level; to examine and expand on current concepts and synthesize new concepts; to identify and prioritize limitations in the use of biological control for plant diseases and nematodes and the scientific research needed to overcome these limitations; and to develop strategies for biological control through management of resident agents or introduction of natural or modified agents.

Book Synopsis Facial-Oral Tract Therapy (F.O.T.T.) by : Ricki Nusser-Müller-Busch
Download or read book Facial-Oral Tract Therapy (F.O.T.T.) written by Ricki Nusser-Müller-Busch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-07 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers a comprehensive approach to the assessment and treatment of disturbances in facial expression, oral movement, swallowing, breathing, voice and speech production caused by developmental and acquired neurological conditions. The principles outlined are used in patients with different etiologies (e.g. stroke, tumors, traumas). F.O.T. T., developed by Kay Coombes, is a hands-on approach based on an understanding of neurological functions and the way we learn from experience. The approach aims to give the patient experience of physiological posture and movement using facial-oral functions in normal activities of daily living (ADL). Rather than mere “exercises”, F.O.T.T involves meaningful activities aiming to promote participation, according to ICF criteria. Four main areas are covered: nutrition, oral hygiene, nonverbal communication and speech. Each chapter summarises the problems of severely ill patients and shows the clinical reasoning behind the solutions offered. Separate chapters discuss tracheostomy management and the training of the carers involved, including relatives. The chapter authors are experienced specialists (physio-, occupational- and speech-language therapists and physicians), whose contributions aim to provide interdisciplinary perspectives and translate latest research into clinical practice.
