Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the perfect companion to introduction to ethics courses, Dell'Olio and Simon's reader includes the most influential ethical theories without overwhelming the beginning student. It contains a variety of readings encompassing contemporary and classic philosophers, male and female perspectives of both Western and non-Western ethical traditions, and readings in both theoretical and applied ethics. Introduction to Ethics comprises of thirty-seven essays divided into nine chapters; the first chapter introduces the nature of moral theory with a brief account of the different moral theories that will follow in the text. Chapters 2 through 8 are each devoted to a particular moral theory with readings that represent the position and those who challenge it, accompanied by an application of the theory to a particular moral problem. Finally, chapter 9 offers readings in practical guidance on 'living a good life.' Each chapter has a brief introduction that provides an overview of the selection with pointers on what to note as the selection is read and concludes with a series of thought-provoking study questions and a selection for further reading making it easier for students to understand and appreciate their reading.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Theory: An Introduction to Ethics This book is intended to serve as an introduction to Ethics as opposed to a handbook or manual. The difference between the two, as I conceive it, lies in the fact that the one is intended to start the student on the subject and then leave him to pursue his own investigations, while the other aims at giving him some sort of assistance throughout their course. The manual, therefore, would have to give some account of all the chief ethical theories and all the chief ethical problems, whereas this is just what the introduction would avoid. In attempting to write an introduction in this sense, I have followed a method, which is very common in teaching and lecturing, but has not been much used in published work. That is, I have taken, after a brief introduction to the subject, two specimen authors, or, rather, two specimen works, representing different points of view, and have examined and criticized them in some detail. These works should really be read by the student in conjunction with, or before, my own book. But to avoid overburdening him (or her) with too much reading at the outset of the subject, I have confined myself with slight exceptions, to the consideration of these two works, and have said as little as possible about the general philosophical views of the authors, or even about their other ethical writings. As I hope that this book may be of use to students who can read no language but English, I have quoted throughout from standard translations of the works in question. In the case of Aristotle's Ethics, I have used Peters' translation, and for Kant's Fundamental Principles, I have used the translation by Dr. T. K. Abbott. Book excerpt: 2021 Catholic Media Association Award first place award in morality, ethics, christology, mariology, and redemption What does it mean to live and build up the Kingdom of God? In this book, professor and priest Alberto de Mingo Kaminouchi introduces the contemporary reader to Christian ethics by examining the New Testament through the three key concepts of Aristotle’s ethics: happiness, virtue, and love. In turn, the three affirmations orient this reflection through the Gospel. First, when the triune God appears on the horizon, it becomes easier to understand that existence has a purpose: namely, participating with the entire human family in this project of happiness called the Kingdom of God. Second, happiness is not something outside of us; it consists in the practice of the virtues that bring about a personal transformation. Third, the project of the Kingdom leads us to live in love with others. De Mingo Kaminouchi shows the reader a real model of this in the community we call the church, the “field hospital” for all those in need of hope. This book is accessibly written for readers not already well-versed in Christian ethics.

Book excerpt: The premise of this ethical theory anthology is that the study of ethics represents, above all else, participation in the thinking of a long tradition of philosophers. Organized historically by philosopher, the book provides an introductory chapter on ethical concepts and helpful commentary and study questions throughout the reading selections. Morality and the Good Life is substantial enough for a full course in ethics, but it is concise enough to allow the instructor time to include other approaches in addition to the classic texts and materials presented in this volume.
