Book Synopsis The Gaithers and Southern Gospel by : Ryan P. Harper
Download or read book The Gaithers and Southern Gospel written by Ryan P. Harper and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2017-04-26 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Gaithers and Southern Gospel, Ryan P. Harper examines songwriters Bill and Gloria Gaither's Homecoming video and concert series--a gospel music franchise that, since its beginning in 1991, has outperformed all Christian and much secular popular music on the American music market. The Homecomings represent "southern gospel." Typically that means a musical style popular among white evangelical Christians in the American South and Midwest, and it sometimes overlaps in style, theme, and audience with country music. The Homecomings' nostalgic orientation--their celebration of "traditional" kinds of American Christian life--harmonize well with southern gospel music, past and present. But amidst the backward gazes, the Homecomings also portend and manifest change. The Gaithers' deliberate racial integration of their stages, their careful articulation of a relatively inclusive evangelical theology, and their experiments with an array of musical forms demonstrate that the Homecoming is neither simplistically nostalgic, nor solely "southern." Harper reveals how the Gaithers negotiate a tension between traditional and changing community norms as they seek simultaneously to maintain and expand their audience as well as to initiate and respond to shifts within their fan base. Pulling from his field work at Homecoming concerts, behind the scenes with the Gaithers, and with numerous Homecoming fans, Harper reveals the Homecoming world to be a dynamic, complicated constellation in the formation of American religious identity.

Book Synopsis A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night by : Farshid Kazemi
Download or read book A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night written by Farshid Kazemi and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is something weird and eerie going on in the oneiric Iranian ghost-town Bad City. A mysterious female vampire, clad in a long-black veil, imbued with occult and erotic power, has newly arrived in town and is summarily dispensing with its unsavory characters. Through a chance encounter in a night of luminal darkness, an eternally dark romance begins – baptized in love’s blood. Shot in dazzling anamorphic black and white cinematography and accompanied with an intoxicating and mesmeric soundtrack, Ana Lily Amirpour’s debut feature film A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014), was an instant popular and critical success. Dubbed ‘the first Iranian vampire western’ the genre-bending film is a pastiche of genres such as vampire cinema, gothic and horror films, spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, and Iranian cinema; yet the film stands as a new vampire fairy-tale with a unique style all its own. The first full-length study dedicated to the film since its release, this book in the Devil’s Advocate series provides a unique approach to the film situated within three theoretical coordinates: the vampire genre, psychoanalytic (film) theory and German Idealism.

Book excerpt: Rachel Goldenstein continues to lead her group home, but perhaps Earth isn't as safe as she had thought. It is a time for the newly appointed Lady Goldensword to command armies. A time to forge new alliances and to make war against the children of magic. There will be great loss for Rachel... and perhaps a chance to learn the terrible truth behind her shadow magic. “By the light of the gates, she saw her adversaries rise, bearing magical swords and staves. Rachel set down her candle stand and drew her swords. Somewhere, during the skirmish that followed, a flying, severed leg almost toppled her candle stand. She put out a hand to steady it. Some, the less hardy of them, fled at the sight of her. Ever afterwards, there would be a legend of a ghost in a torn white dress drenched in red blood, with crimson hair and a devilish grin. It was a world that could never be the same. A world that a woman would boldly change.”

Download or read book Abraham written by Joseph Blenkinsopp and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this discursive commentary Joseph Blenkinsopp explores the story of Abraham -- iconic ancestor of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam -- as told in Genesis 11-25. Presented in continuous discussion rather than in verse-by-verse form, Blenkinsopp’s commentary focuses on the literary and theological artistry of the narrative as a whole. Blenkinsopp discussses a range of issues raised in the Abraham saga, including confirmation of God’s promises, Isaac’s sacrifice and the death of Jesus, and Abraham’s other beloved son, Ishmael. Each chapter has a section called “Filling in the Gaps,” which probes some of the vast amount of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic commentary that the basic Genesis text has generated through the ages. In an epilogue Blenkinsopp looks at Abraham in early Christianity and expresses his own views, as a Christian, on Abraham. Readers of Blenkinsopp’s Abraham: The Story of a Life will surely come away with a deeper, richer understanding of this seminal ancient figure.
Book Synopsis The Original Aramaic New Testament in Plain English in Calligraphy font (7th ed. with embedded notes) by : Rev. Glenn David Bauscher
Download or read book The Original Aramaic New Testament in Plain English in Calligraphy font (7th ed. with embedded notes) written by Rev. Glenn David Bauscher and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 7th edition of The Original Aramaic Peshitta New Testament in Plain English. Aramaic was the language of the Jewish people in Israel and throughout the Middle East and in Europe from the time of their captivity in Babylon in the 6th century BC and afterward until the Muslim conquests of the 7th century AD. The Peshitta is the original Aramaic New Testament, as the author demonstrates in the hundreds of notes throughout this edition, from Matthew to Revelation, showing how the Greek NT is a translation of the Peshitta's Aramaic readings, and sometimes a mistranslation, or several Greek translations resulted from one Aramaic reading. The original NT was written by Jewish men, for the most part, to Jewish converts of Yeshua The Messiah who were the first and founding members of the churches Paul The Apostle evangelized throughout the Roman world of the 1st century. Paul always went to the synagogues in any city or town and preached Yeshua The Messiah as The Son of God and THE LORD. 8x11 paperback
Download or read book To Elinor written by Jane Beaton Bartow and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Darrow fell in love with Elinor at first sight. But she was already engaged. To two men. He joined the Merchant Marine to train as a radio operator. His letters from Gallups Island and then the war charmed her, but Elinor had changed. Women entered the working world--as boatbuilders and micrometer testers and even riveters and movie stars--and she wanted to become Something Big. Marriage wasn't for her. Darrow's letters kept coming. . . . . . the same letters my sister and I discovered in a large photo box after our parents? deaths. Their romance was interrupted by the war and by the fledgling dreams of a woman, a Bishop's daughter, who wanted to do something more than carry on the traditional roles women had in the forties. The tale of this romance is in both voices--Elinor's from the homefront and Darrow's from the war.
Book Synopsis The Original Aramaic New Testament in Plain English by : Rev. David Bauscher
Download or read book The Original Aramaic New Testament in Plain English written by Rev. David Bauscher and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-12-06 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a rare New Testament (3rd edition) from the Aramaic language of Jesus and his countrymen of 1st century Israel in a prose English translation . Aramaic was used in Mel Gibson's film "The Passion of the Christ" to make the film as realistic and accurate as possible. This New Testament will surprise and thrill the reader with its power and inspiration coming from the words of "Eeshu" (Pronunciation of 'Jesus' in ancient Aramaic) as He originally spoke them, in a literal yet idiomatic English rendering. Much evidence is presented in notes demonstrating very powerfully that The Peshitta Aramaic NT is the original behind The Greek NT. There are many graphics and even photos from Dead Sea Scrolls to illustrate an Aramaic verse and how a reading was interpreted by a Greek translating the text, making this a unique scholarly study Bible in elegant Lucida Calligraphy font.539 pages 6x9" Black & White;hardbound.
Download or read book Ramayana written by C. Rajagopalachari and published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. This book was released on 2023 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ramayana is not history or biography. It is a part of Hindu mythology. One cannot understand Hindu dharma unless one knows Rama and Seeta, Bharata, Lakshmana, Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Hanuman. Mythology cannot be dispensed with. Philosophy alone or rituals alone or mythology alone cannot be sufficient. These are the three strands of all ancient religions. The attitude towards things spiritual which belongs to a particular people cannot be grasped or preserved or conveyed unless we have all these three. To millions of men, women and children in India, the Ramayana is not a mere tale. It has more truth and meaning than the events in one's own life. Just as plants grow under the influence of sunlight, the people of India grow in mental strength and culture by absorbing the glowing inspiration of the Ramayana.
