Book Synopsis Salt Intrusion, Tides and Mixing in Multi-Channel Estuaries by : Anh Duc Nguyen
Download or read book Salt Intrusion, Tides and Mixing in Multi-Channel Estuaries written by Anh Duc Nguyen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-channel estuaries, such as the Mekong Delta in Vietnam and the Scheldt in the Netherlands, have characteristics of both the river and the sea, forming an environment influenced by tidal movements of the sea and freshwater flow of the river. This study discusses a predictive analytical approach for salinity intrusion and discharge estimate in multi-channel estuaries. The new approach agrees with 1-D hydrodynamic models and observations, indicating its applicability in practice. It has successfully developed a new theory and a new equation to quantify tidal pumping due to ebb-flood channel residual circulation and the related salt dispersion.
Book Synopsis Estuaries and Coastal Zones in Times of Global Change by : Kim Dan Nguyen
Download or read book Estuaries and Coastal Zones in Times of Global Change written by Kim Dan Nguyen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of extended papers based on presentations given during the ICEC 2018 conference, held in Caen, France, in August 2018. It explores both the limitations and advantages of current models, and highlights the latest developments concerning new numerical schemes, high-performance computing, multi-physics and multi-scale methods, and better interaction with field or scale model data. Accordingly, it addresses the interests of practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, and engineers active in this field.
Book Synopsis Estuarine Research in the 1980s by : C. Lavett Smith
Download or read book Estuarine Research in the 1980s written by C. Lavett Smith and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1992-07-01 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hudson River estuary is one of the most intensively studied estuaries in the world. Many environmental and civic groups have struggled with the conflict in the Hudson River area between the desire for a quality environment and the ever-increasing demands of an expanding human population for drinking water, electric power, efficient transportation, and waste disposal. Estuarine Research in the 1980s provides a synoptic overview of the research conducted on the Hudson estuary since 1980. The essays reflect diverse studies of the physical, chemical, and biological ecology of the Hudson River estuary. Included are historical studies of water flow through the estuary; a model to predict the effect of increased withdrawals of fresh water; a summary of the movements of radionuclides from power plants and atmospheric fallout within the Hudson watershed; and a paper on sedimentation in New York harbor. Several essays are devoted to surveys of the fishes of special parts of the estuary. Others deal with the life histories, movements, and population dynamics of individual species. Also included are a section of fisheries methods, including the effects of sampling additional habitats; a study of the effects of channel dredging on water quality; reviews of indices of population abundance; a review of the quality control procedures used in utility-sponsored research; a model of the effects of compensation on the risk of population decline and extinction; a study addressing the energetics of the lower food web; and a plea for the restoration of the badly polluted Croton Bay.
