Book excerpt: The international community is in agreement that a lepton collider in the TeV centre of mass energy range is required to leverage discoveries made at the Large Hadron Collider and expand the physics programme. Two future colliders are proposed. The International Linear Collider (ILC) will collide electron and positron bunches at a centre of mass energy of 500 GeV, upgradable to 1 TeV. The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is designed to reach 3 TeV. This thesis investigates the wakefields, which degrade the beam quality, and beam dynamics in the main linacs of the ILC, presenting the first direct comparison of beam dynamics for linacs made up of the alternative high gradient superconducting cavity designs - the Reentrant and Ichiro cavities. Higher order modes of the electromagnetic field in the cavities, which will be excited by the passage of the bunches, are calculated using finite difference and finite element techniques. A trapped dipole mode in the Ichiro cavity at 2.4498 GHz is identified. These modes are used as the basis for the beam dynamics studies. These simulations have demonstrated that ILC linacs made up of the new high gradient cavities, with targeted damping, would meet wakefield requirements for delivering high quality beams for particle physics studies. This result is important since any upgrade of the ILC from 500 GeV to 1 TeV centre of mass energy would make use of one of these high gradient cavity designs in the extension to the linacs. Beam dynamics in the CLIC beam delivery system (BDS), are also detailed. Simulations included deflecting mode Crab Cavities required to maximise collision luminosity when there is a crossing angle, and verify analytic results for the required deflecting voltage and tolerances to phase differences. The tolerance to crab cavity roll angle is found to be extremely tight, at 5.9 millidegrees. Additionally, results in this thesis uncover a problem with the BDS magnet layout which must be addressed.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we discuss some basic beam dynamics issues related to obtaining and preserving the luminosity of a next generation linear collider. The beams are extracted from a damping ring and compressed in length by the first bunch compressor. They are then accelerated in a preaccelerator linac up to an energy appropriate for injection into a high gradient linac. In many designs this pre-acceleration is followed by another bunch compression to reach a short bunch. After acceleration in the linac, the bunches are finally focused transversely to a small spot. 27 refs., 1 fig.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feasibility of future linear colliders depends on achieving very tight alignment and steering tolerances. All proposals (NLC, JLC, CLIC, TESLA and S-BAND) currently require a total emittance growth in the main linac of less than 30-100% [1]. This should be compared with a 100% emittance growth in the much smaller SLC linac [2]. Major advances in alignment and beam steering techniques beyond those used in the SLC are necessary for the next generation of linear colliders. In this paper, we present an experimental study of quadrupole alignment with a dispersion-free steering algorithm. A closely related method (wakefield-free steering) takes into account wakefield effects [3]. However, this method can not be studied at the SLC. The requirements for future linear colliders lead to new and unconventional ideas about alignment and beam steering. For example, no dipole correctors are foreseen for the standard trajectory correction in the NLC [4]; beam steering will be done by moving the quadrupole positions with magnet movers. This illustrates the close symbiosis between alignment, beam steering and beam dynamics that will emerge. It is no longer possible to consider the accelerator alignment as static with only a few surveys and realignments per year. The alignment in future linear colliders will be a dynamic process in which the whole linac, with thousands of beam-line elements, is aligned in a few hours or minutes, while the required accuracy of about 5 pm for the NLC quadrupole alignment [4] is a factor of 20 higher than in existing accelerators. The major task in alignment and steering is the accurate determination of the optimum beam-line position. Ideally one would like all elements to be aligned along a straight line. However, this is not practical. Instead a ''smooth curve'' is acceptable as long as its wavelength is much longer than the betatron wavelength of the accelerated beam. Conventional alignment methods are limited in accuracy by errors in the survey and the fiducials. Beam-based alignment methods ideally only depend upon the BPM resolution and generally provide much better precision. Many of those techniques are described in other contributions to this workshop. In this paper we describe our experiences with a dispersion-free steering algorithm for linacs. This algorithm was first suggested by Raubenheimer and Ruth in 1990 [5]. It h as been studied in simulations for NLC [5], TESLA [6], the S-BAND proposal [7] and CLIC [8]. The dispersion-free steering technique can be applied to the whole linac at once and returns the alignment (or trajectory) that minimizes the dispersive emittance growth of the beam. Thus it allows an extremely fast alignment of the beam-line. As we will show dispersion-free steering is only sensitive to quadrupole misalignments. Wakefield-free steering [3] as mentioned before is a closely related technique that minimizes the emittance growth caused by both dispersion and wakefields. Due to hardware limitations (i.e. insufficient relative range of power supplies) we could not study this method experimentally in the SLC. However, its systematics are very similar to those of dispersion-free steering. The studies of dispersion-free steering which are presented made extensive use of the unique potential of the SLC as the only operating linear collider. We used it to study the performance and problems of advanced beam-based optimization tools in a real beam-line environment and on a large scale. We should mention that the SLC has utilized beam-based alignment for years [9], using the difference of electron and positron trajectories. This method, however, cannot be used in future linear colliders. The goal of our work is to demonstrate the performance of advanced beam-based alignment techniques in linear colliders and to anticipate possible reality-related problems. Those can then be solved in the design state for the next generation of linear colliders.

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) aims at electron and positron collisions at a centre of mass energy of 3 TeV. In CLIC, the main accelerating structures are designed to operate at an X-band frequency of 12 GHz with an accelerating gradient of 100 MV/m. Two significant issues in linear accelerators that can prevent high gradient being achieved are electrical breakdown and wakefields. The baseline design for the CLIC main linacs relies on a small aperture size to reduce the breakdown probability and a strong damping scheme to suppress the wakefields. The strong damping scheme may have a higher possibility of electrical breakdown. In this thesis an alternative design for the main accelerating structures of CLIC is studied and various aspects of this design are discussed. This design is known as a Damped and Detuned Structure (DDS) which relies on moderate damping and strong detuning of the higher order modes (HOMs). The broad idea of DDS is based upon the Next Linear Collider (NLC) design. The advantages of this design are: well damped wakefields, minimised rf breakdown probability and reduced size of the structure compared to the strong damping design. Procedures necessary to minimise the rf monopole fields and enhance the wakefield suppression are discussed. The rf as well as mechanical designs of a test structure are presented. This unique design forms the basis of this research and allows both the electrical breakdown and beam dynamics constraints to be simultaneously satisfied.

Book excerpt: The baseline design of CLIC (Compact Linear Collider) uses X-band accelerating structures for its main linacs. In order to maintain beam stability in multibunch operation, long-range transverse wakefields must be suppressed by 2 orders of magnitude between successive bunches, which are separated in time by 0.5 ns. Such strong wakefield suppression is achieved by equipping every accelerating structure cell with four damping waveguides terminated with individual rf loads. A beam-based experiment to directly measure the effectiveness of this long-range transverse wakefield and benchmark simulations was made in the FACET test facility at SLAC using a prototype CLIC accelerating structure. The experiment showed good agreement with the simulations and a strong suppression of the wakefields with an unprecedented minimum resolution of 0.1 V/(pC mm m).

Book excerpt: Modern microfabrication techniques based on deep etch x-ray lithography (LIGA) can be used to produce large-aspect-ratio, metallic or dielectric, planar structures suitable for high-frequency RF acceleration of charged particle beams. Specifically, these techniques offer significant advantages over conventional manufacturing methods for future linear colliders (beyond NLC, the Next Linear Collider) because of several unique systems requirements. First, to have the required ac ''wall plug'' power within reasonable limits, such future linear colliders (≥ 5TeV) must operate at high frequency (≥ 30GHz). This implies the need of a large number of intricate accelerating structures with ever smaller dimensions and extremely tight manufacturing tolerances, imposing new challenges in mass-production, precision fabrication techniques. Microfabrication is particularly suitable for meeting this need. Secondly, luminosity requirements suggest the use of multi-bunch acceleration of electrons and positrons in the linear collider. In order for these schemes to accelerate low-emittance beams over a long distance, it is important that the wakefield effects be reduced to a minimum in the accelerating structure. Asymmetric planar structures have more geometric degrees of freedom than cylindrically symmetric structures. In addition to detuning, these can be utilized to further reduce the wakefields. Thirdly, in order to clearly discriminate physics events in the final interaction point at which electrons and positrons collide, it is required that secondary particle production from beamstrahlung be minimized. Flat electron and positron beams with a large aspect ratio will be beneficial in reducing beamstrahlung in the final focus region, but cause the beam to be more sensitive to wakefields in the vertical dimension. In principle, a flat beam can be accelerated in a planar structure with reduced wakefield in the vertical direction for the entire length of the accelerator.

Book excerpt: In order to prevent electrical breakdown occurring in the JLC/NLC (Japanese Linear Collider/Next Linear Collider) X-band structures several new structures are under investigation. These accelerating structures represent an evolutionary design of the DDS series of structures [1]. The phase advance per cell has been varied and the detailed elliptical shape of the cell has been varied in order to simultaneously minimize the group velocity, the surface electromagnetic fields and the pulse temperature rise on the copper surface [2]. It is also important to ensure that the wakefield induced by multiple bunches traversing the accelerating structures does not disrupt trailing bunches. The long-range wakefield must be decreased adequately in order to prevent a BBU (Beam Break Up) instability occurring and to ensure that emittance dilution due to the higher order modes is kept to acceptable levels. The long-range wakefield is forced to de-cohere by detuning all of the frequencies such that the mode density of frequencies is approximately Gaussian. In order to minimize the impact of the wakefield on the beam dynamics we change the bandwidth and the standard deviation of the Gaussian distribution of frequencies such that a ''cost function'' is minimized. Interleaving of cell frequencies of adjacent structures is required to adequately damp the wakefield of each particular structure under consideration. The resulting alignment tolerances imposed on the cells and structures is significantly looser alignment tolerances with the use of the code.

Book excerpt: The primary goal of present and future linear colliders is to maximize the integrated luminosity for the experimental program. Beam dynamics plays a central role in the maximization of integrated luminosity. It is the major issue in the production of small beam sizes and low experimental backgrounds and is also an important factor in the production of particle numbers, in the acceleration process, and in the number of bunches. The beam dynamics effects on bunches which are extracted from the damping rings, accelerated in the linac, collimated, momentum analyzed, and finally delivered to the final focus are reviewed. The effects of bunch compression, transverse and longitudinal wakefields, BNS damping, energy definition, dispersion, emittance, bunch aspect ratio, feedback, and stability are all important. 11 refs., 1 tab.
