Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Far Away and Long Ago" is the autobiography of naturalist William Hudson, who spent the first eighteen years of his life on the Argentinean pampas. Hudson is revered in Argentina, where they refer to him as Guillermo Enrique Hudson and name streets and towns after him. In simple and stately prose, he writes about his boyhood as one of several sons in an English family that ran an estancia on the Pampas. Despite several failed attempts to school him, he managed to pick up one of the best educations available: by using his eyes and ears to study nature. His skill in language, which is considerable, came from reading his father's books on his own. Whether writing about ombu trees, plovers, snakes, lightning storms, rheas (Argentinian ostriches), or his neighboring ranchers, Hudson brought a whole world to life with this book. Hudson published "Far Away and Long Ago" in 1917 while he was living in England. During W. H. Hudson's time, the Argentine pampas was a land of freedom and excitement, which he describes well in this memoir. Descriptions of natural history and wildlife also abound, together with politics and interpersonal relationships of the times. You'd think Hudson's book would give insights into Hudson's childhood and life - and it does - but more importantly it recreates the history, culture and geography of Argentina in a way few travel books accomplish. "Far Away and Long Ago" is perhaps one of the greatest autobiographies ever written, a book that will, without question, withstand several readings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten-year-old Avery Green loves science. He loves football. He is crazy about Star Wars. But Hebrew school? No, thank you. Avery would rather have his arms sliced off with a lightsaber than sit through one more day of Hebrew School. He’s only asked about a million times why he has to go, but no one in his family has managed to convince him. And then one day, Rabbi Bob shows up. He is strange, but how strange? And strange how? Piecing together some unusual clues, Avery begins to suspect that this new rabbi might be a Jedi master. Armed with something more powerful than a lightsaber, he sets out to reveal the surprising truth. Going Rogue (at Hebrew School) is a hilarious tale about the deep passions of a 10-year-old boy, Judaism, family, big questions and the surprising journey one can have in pursuit of truth and understanding. A book for any child who questions the purpose of religious school and any parent who has run out of answers.

Book excerpt: THE GREAT ART DECO CHASE, part prequel to 2011s Nectar of the Lavender, traces our main characters relationships with the best and worst friends from his post formative years, including those also choosing to relocate from their small northeastern city to metro New York. If possible, there are more quirky characters and intense poetry than ever, breeding ground for more adventures than ever. As we learned in Nectar, he struggles to understand the passing of Jeff and Danny, and although his Malaysian-Caribbean friend Jimmy and Anglo-American friend Big Bad Bill fill in admirably, the balance isnt quite right, because across the verge, there remains Carol Gary, Weird Andy, and Dannys ex-wife Robin, of which more anon. And then theres Lauren, Kathy, and the rest of his social life, which is complicated on quiet days. Everyone would want to be him, and yet no one would. In a separate alternating side plot, or possibly main plot, we read of the story of Maury and Sam, two boys who became best friends in the 1930s, who parted as teenagers after Sams parents moved to a bigger city in search of better educations. Both seek and find their fortunesMaury as a specialized manufacturer in the Midwest, Sam as a charismatic composer and conductor all of America wishes it could claim. On a more personal note, this book is largely based on notes and correspondence from a time which was long ago and far away, and Ive taken the liberty to cite some verbatim.

The particular occasion inviting this recognition of his work is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Society of Biblical Literature's section on The Bible in Ancient and Modern Media (BAMM), which Tom was instrumental in founding. For two and half decades this program unit has provided scholars with opportunities to explore and experience biblical material in media other than silent print, including both oral and multimedia electronic performances. This book explores many, though by no means all, of the issues lifted up in those sessions over the years. Contributors A. K. M. Adam Adam Gilbert Bartholomew Arthur J. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a material and semiotic study of transnationalsim, analyzed in terms of race, class, gender, and sexuality. The objects of analysis range from the aftermath of the U.S.-led war in Iraq, to science fiction by Pat Cadigan, CJ Cherryh, and Samuel Delaney, to material-semiotic feminist theory by Donna Harraway, to the neo-Marxist historical geography of Mike Davis and David Harvey. The book is centrally concerned with the social and cultural change brought about by the rise of the new social movements in the United States, such as the women's movement and the lesbian, gay, queer, and transgendered movements, and the backlash by the American new right against this change. Ethical and political concerns are central to the arguments, which is framed in terms of Emmanuel Levinas's notion of radical, non-reciprocal responsibility. Laura Chernaik is a free-lance writer.
